How many Amish are there? Where do they live? (Amish Population)

A look at the total Amish population and which places (countries & states) they live.
My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. I run the Amish America website. More: amishamerica.com/

A note on how Amish population numbers were compiled from the Young Center site:
Population figures include both adults and children. Estimates were calculated using a variety of sources including Raber’s New American Almanac, reports by correspondents in Die Botschaft, The Budget, and The Diary, settlement directories, regional newsletters, and settlement informants. The table includes all Amish groups that use horse-and-buggy transportation, but excludes car-driving groups such as the Beachy Amish and Amish Mennonites.
Statistics compiled by Edsel Burdge, Jr., Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, Elizabethtown College, in cooperation with Joseph F. Donnermeyer, School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, and with assistance from David Luthy, Heritage Historical Library, Aylmer, Ontario.

I had to fix and re-upload this video after I noticed a small error shortly after posting it. My apologies if you left a comment on the original video. See the video description above for more on how the Young Center arrives at these population figures. Here are the numbers broken down by region: US: 355,660 Amish Canada: 5,815 Amish South America: 210 Amish

Well hello, and good evening. Wie gehts? So you've passed my suggestions - loved the videos I've seen thus far and of course subscribed. And no wonder, since along with my large eclectic library I have a vast yearning to know more about the histories of theologies. Or, 'What wisps of belief brandished it's way into what is considered canon.' I and my son had lived for 4 years and miss South Wisconsin- well the state as a whole. I devoured 1 and 4 libraries in Waukesha and Milwaukee, WI. One of the prospective side jobs I had read about while reading everything thing from their beginnings, through the diary/memoirs of the persecutions in Europe etc. was providing rides for them to distant doctor's appts. and other farther locations. I didn't get as far as the direction to remain there as I had hoped. Ewww. Florida again. One question, and I know I could look it up but so enjoy your knowledge, is when and/or how many Amish took to it being ok to have their photos taken? Also, I understood of what I found that they don't incorporate images on dolls or have any type of token imagery as it would be considered vanity or a graven image or 'idol'. I noticed in your videos on 'What they do at Christmas' they made snowmen and gingerbread men with faces and even set nativities out. Could you please, if you will, tell me about when those changes began and which groups do or don't follow those rules. Thank you for your efforts in maintaining your channel, und Ich? ist sehr gut, Danke

Just wondering, in your travels have you met with any of the Amish in Maine and Vermont. I have seen them in Northern Maine years ago but wasn't sure if they had a substantial number there or not. Lots of farming up that way, potatoes, broccoli and corn along with I'm sure many other hardy crops. I was a little shocked when we stopped in at a little creamery store in Southern Utah and found Amish products being sold there, but we were told they did not have Amish in their state so the items were brought in from elsewhere. They are truly an interesting people and culture. Thank you so much for all your wonderful information/

No Amish Mafia, that was just a TV show from someone's creative mind:) Most teens choose to stay of their own accord - growing up in the culture there are a lot of things that make it attractive for life (besides of course religious reasons). They double in population roughly every 20-22 years, some groups grow faster than others however (plainer Amish tend to have a bit larger families and higher growth rates on the whole)

They can't be Ana-baptist they practice Arianism, that's why the Catholic church persecuted them pretty much the same reason they went after French Huguenots, Baptists where burned for Baptizing adults (or age of recognition). I thought my people where persecuted for who we became where as the Visogoth Christians and North African Basque Christians where persecuted for the culture they where born into.
