How Make Modern Floating Shelves

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week I am building a set of maple floating shelves. I have built and installed this style shelf many times over the years, and It has always proven to be a simple and strong way to make them.
I installed this set of shelves at a friend’s house I remodeled last Summer. If you want to see more about this house remodel, visit my instagram bit.ly/alminsta
If you have any questions about this build, please let me know in the comments. I do my best to answer those.
Thanks for watching!
Michael

    Hey I am a Carpenter, and just as an little hint. When u cut solid wood, take the side stop (not sure if the translation is correct ) approx. half of an inch behind the beginning of the sawblade. It prevents the wood from getting stuck between the blade and the side stop. Geers Cyrill

    That might be the best floating shelf video on KZread. Others involve welding or use "kits" AKA sponsor bait. Nice to be shown how to do it and not sold on how to do it.

    Hey mate, first off, I absolutely love your channel. Damn, I'm obsessed. You actually inspired me to do a router table build which I just finished. The misses wants some floating shelves for the dining room and I was wondering, do you have any thoughts on using say a white oak plywood over solid wood? and 1/2" over 3/4? Or do you prefer hardwood? These will be 7' off the ground, about 9" wide by 36". And lastly how thick- as in how wide did you make your cuts? It looks about 3" wide? Thanks mate.

  • @MichaelAlm

    @MichaelAlm

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Steve! Yeah the key is for the cleat to fit really nice and tight to the channel, and having the corner support does a ton to keep it from sagging. I would love to do a buffet. I need to find a friend in town that needs one. Build ins are kinda my jam. The doors came from Pinky's Iron Doors out of LA. Not the easiest install ever, but they are good looking.

  • @MichaelAlm

    @MichaelAlm

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Tais, Thank you! I didn't drill deep enough to worry about electrical wires. It would be a concern if you were putting large deep holes in studs. The code says electrical wires must be at least 1 1/4" from the face of the stud. On top of that you have 1/2"-5/8" drywall and 1/4" tile. So if you drill deeper than 1.5", you should scan your walls. Hope that helps!

    Awesome video. Awesome trick with the screwdriver. Idea... stolen. Quick Question though... When you tacked the shelves up using a brad nailer, does that not pretty much automatically mean getting those shelves off, should she remodel or move, will be nearly impossible. No? Would two well placed tiny screws under the shelf not be a better idea?

    He would need a different support structure. Something with either dowels or metal rods protruding to support the shelves. He did a video a while back where he builds floating shelves for a business. He used custom metal supports he had fabricated. But you could make the same thing out of wood with dowels as your supports.

    Thicker shelves and thinner box material would allow you to make an “E” (with short legs) assembly bracket out of 2x stock that you could then set into studs with lag screws. The box carcass (1/4” ply top/bottom and hardwood edges) then slides over the bracket all the way to the wall. I did this on some about 2” thick, 8” deep and 4 ft long. Very sturdy. I stood up under one once and almost killed myself, but the shelf didn’t budge a mm.

    They might sag if you didn't have the corner support. If I were to fully float the shelves, I would build a littler taller cleat that had a bit of a frame built into it. The deeper the shelf the harder it is to stop it from sagging. Really deep shelves need metal rods drilled into studs.

    The corner supports are definitely important. It may sag if you don't use those. If they were floating in the middle of the wall, I might beef up the cleat and add some arms that come off it, and slip into the shelf.
