    It took me a month to become functional, 10 years to become fluent, 15 to become adult level literate, meaning the ability to read and write at a native high school level. I studied an hour a day 5 days a week. This while living in Japan. It takes a looooooooooong time and a lot of patience

    It doesn't take years for everyone, it really depends. Some people learn extremely fast, some don't, some don't even try.

    @@Nervous101 It took ME 10 years to be fluent and 15 to be adult level literate. It takes Japanese 10 years of reading and writing daily to become adult level literate.

    I got N3 in about 3 years before going to Japan. I got N2 after living in Japan for a year. I also noticed that it seemed like Japanese speakers were speaking a lot slower after the one year mark in Japan. I ended up staying two years.

    She said she was studying full time. It’s a much more reasonable time period than some KZreadrs claim. It’s also a lot faster than me 😂
