Should you be taking Tamoxifen for 5 or 10 years? It all depends on your individual risk of recurrence from breast cancer

I was supposed to be on the 10 year program with tamoxifen but just recently discontinued it after 7 1/2 years. I had been on the name brand Nolvadex but they discontinued manufacturing it. After a very unsuccessful re-attempt with the generic brand for 2 weeks (the side effects were crippling me!), my oncologist and I agreed to stop altogether.

Can you comment on switching to an AI after Tamoxifen or switching to Tamoxifen after an AI for a total of 7-10years. It seems to me that this is done a lot. Do they work well consecutively? Do people switch mainly to avoid the risk of serious side effects from taking one or the other for more than 5 years? Seems to me that more and more ladies are being told to go longer on endocrine treatment. I was recently “warned” that instead of 5 years on Tamoxifen as planned, I am very likely looking at 10 now, possibly switching to an AI. This is due to new research results coming in the past 3 years since I was diagnosed indicating that 10 years is better than 5 (even for my stage 1 grade 2 no node ILC. ). Thanks for any clarification Dr Liz!

What is classed as large? I had 44mm grade 3 IDC, clear nodes, oncotype 2. No chemo but radiotherapy. I've been told low risk but have not been told how long for yet.
