I had perfect teeth, but I sucked my thumb I was the cause of this.😭

After 2.5 amazing years of wearing adult braces, they were finally removed by my orthodontist. I was instructed to wear my retainers 24hrs a day; only removing them to eat and/or drink non-water fluids. I’ve been wearing my retainers faithfully for 6mos now and I can finally wear them only at night, however, I will continue wearing them throughout the day and night for another year or 2 before only wearing them at night, and my orthodontist is okay with my decision to continue wearing them for 24hrs a day. I don’t want any opportunity of my teeth shifting back to it’s original location. I love my new smile!

You should only wear them at night. You're passed the point of needing to wear them all day. That crucial stage was in the first couple months. Your teeth will not be able to shift back if you wear them for eight hours during sleep. Don't over do it, you're not enjoying the benefits of getting your braces off if you're gonna still wear a retainer 24/7 for two more years. Also the wear and tear of wearing a retainer in public and having to take them out in pubic is more of a hassle than actually having braces. You spent all that money on braces, please reap the benefits of finally getting them off.

@@ahmetsaid7997 Same story here. The reason why I had to wear braces is because I did not remove my left upper and lower wisdom teeth when I was young. I am wearing retainers now , but just had my wisdom teeth removed, I am talking less of a month having my braces taken off. I couldn’t wear my retainers for about 4 days, the 5th day they felt tight but I am good now. Next day, they just felt right. My orthodontist instructed me to wear my retainers 24 hrs a day except while eating. Then, next 4 months, wear them 2/3s of a day, 16 hrs and then only at night for a year. I’m thinking to wear them every night maybe for 2 years instead, they don’t bother me.

This orthodontist is the most perfect person in the world to ever explain anything! From his diction to his mouth movements, sound of his voice to his body language, 50 minutes of knowledge condensed in 5 minutes without any loss of information, this person should be studied by phychologists and AI models, for the next step in human communication evolution! I`m in awe!

I had braces in 2002 when I was 14. I’m still wearing my retainers at night at 34. I’ve had them replaced since the originals bc I didn’t start wearing them at night regularly again since I noticed they slightly shifted but still are pretty straight. I had my dentist make me new retainers and have been wearing them at night since. I take off some nights but I try to wear them most nights.

@@anilakhanmev2995 you don’t have to wear them every single night but I’d say at least a week a month if you notice your teeth have been shifting. I don’t wear during the day ever.

I got my braces off on The 18th of March and my teeth are sore, I googled it, it says its normal, which I would expect since whenever wearing latex rubber bands after a while of not wearing them would make my teeth sore, but I wonder since you wear it night only, do you wake up with a sore mouth, I have to wear mine for a month straight all day except when eating and brushing teeth

I have both the permanent and clear retainer on both the top and bottom. I wore Invisalign for one and a half years to fix a overbite and a gap between the two front teeth. My teeth were in pretty good shape before hand. The over bite seemed like a very tedious job. usually with a gap I was told that both the permeant and clear retainer are redemanded due to easy shifting.

I wore Invisalign (plastic) retainers for 10 years. The bottom retainers lasted longer than the top retainers b/c the top required more bending to remove it. The extra stress caused it to crack after about 18 months. The bottom retainers lasted twice as long.

Unfortunately nothing on our body ever stops moving - including our teeth. The only way to guarantee that your teeth stay in position is to have a retainer for life. SOME people's teeth may stay stable, but other's teeth will shift. There's really no way to know who's teeth will be stable, so if you like straight teeth then you'll want to wear your retainers long-term. Hope that helps!

@@cristyalvarado9023 That's not true. I had worn for nearly 4 years 8 months. I had decided not to wear this plastic retainer anymore then front teeth shift. Other teeth are still intact. I had been to ortho and he told me I have to wear braces again. Its expensive about $2500 for single arch.

i wish dentist find the new way for retainer because it’s so inconvenient , if i have to wear it most of the time even when i took my braces out it’s like i still wearing the braces 😅 i hope they can put the retainer underneath the root of the teeth or invisible retainer

Wore braces for 7 years. Man what a journey now I wear my essix at night. I lost them for a few weeks noticed a slight shift panicked but got them again thankfully. To anyone about to wear clear retainers. THEY ARE EXPENSIVE!!! Please take good care of them

@@Zhwan_deniz no movement at all! i earlier used to wear clear plastic retainers but after they broke i got metal retainers, metal ones are much better in keeping teeth in the place. note: i wore them 24/7 for first 1.5 year and then every night thereafter

Sir I have extraction case 4 teeth and I am using retainers for 3 years and I am happy that my teeth are in proper position where the active treatment was completed . But when I am not using retainers for a single day. I feel my teeth is moving so plz tell me how long I will use it.

For you guys which type of retainer is the best? 🙂 Permeated retainer sounds good but it may broke when you bite something thick lol

A had my braces removed 2 months ago and I have permanent retainers on top and bottom teeth and also a clear one on the top which I wear every night. I am not trying to escape the homework, but are my teeth going to be stable enough with only the permanent ones, or if after some time I can wear the clear one like 5 nights per week? And also should I be worried that I am not wearing a clear retainer also on my bottom teeth? I feel like it would be very uncomfortable to wear it on both.

Glad the video helped. For most, you can start wearing your clear retainer every other night after 6 months as long as you still have your permanent retainers in place. You don't want to go too long without wear the retainer or your back teeth could potentially shift or move. Its normal to have just an upper removable retainer - for most cases the top teeth will hold the bottom teeth in alignment, so as long as you continue to wear the upper retainer the lower arch should be fine as well.

not asking for medical advice but a general question regarding Howley Retainer with Hydrax finger spring. Can an 8 yr old get such a retainer to fix a misaligned upper incisor tooth. No braces. Want to try the retainer first. I know every case is different but can an 8 yr old use a Howley retainer before considering braces?

You’re telling me I have to wear clear containers at night FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. Dude I’ve worn braces for 3 years to not have anything on my teeth and now I have to do this FOREVER? I don’t know how others feel about this but I feel like that’s a total cliffhanger since I thought I were getting braces off. ALSO the clear retainers are so expensive I don’t have enough money to buy another pair if these run out.

That's something no one tells you about braces. But it is still much better than crooked teeth. All you have to do is to wear one at night. I had braces for 6 years. I developed some scarring in the inside of my mouth due to biting the inner cheek at night while sleeping. Food still gets stuck inbetween the gaps and I can't eat anything that is too spicy because it burns. The thing about us is that the pain never ends (sounds cringe I know). All this because of my own bad chewing habits like open mouth chewing and bad nutrition since I was a kid.

@@mrnobody________ not exactly, the pain i was talking about was while eating, if it is spicy, I start tearing up because it feels like it's burning. This also happens when I eat fast. I understand your hunch, I once looked this up and it said I might have globus pharyngeus. But it genuinely doesn't feel like a throat issue.

A permanent retainer are just braces on the inside of the tooth row instead of the outside. I can only imagine how difficult it might be to keep those teeth clean with a metal rod permanently fixed to those teeth. I was told by my orthodontist that I need to wear my retainers at night. So I'll opt for the Hawley retainer since I only need wear them at night.

Hi there I was wondering if you guys could help me. I'm about to have my braces removed and I'm scared that my treatment isn't finished. The ortho put all the brackets on the teeth except for the very back third molars. Now the second molars which were basically the anchor brackets have shifted towards my tongue in the same position on my top jaw as in my bottom jaw. Any advice or suggestions on what happened?

My bottom wire retainer got removed bc of breaking all the time due to hard bite, my dentist got annoyed coz of me breaking it all the time, he finally removed it after 10 months, is there any complications that I have to take care of??? It's been 2 months since I got it removed. Haven't seen any difference tho.

Hi, I already have my retainers. One of my central incisors tooth is slightly longer than the other one. Do I need to have another retainer made If I have that one tooth filed down slightly?

I'm guessing not because the root and rest of the tooth is intact and will be held in place and so will still fit in the retainer and not move

During the first few months with clear retainers, do you wear it 24/7? Like even during eating? Or do you only wear them when you’re not eating

Hi doctor I have a question, my dentist told me to wear my retainers 8 hrs a day is that oki?

Oh great, so my orthodontist told me to only wear the retainers full time for the first week after I had my braces removed. Then 10 hours a day. Did I not wear mine enough??? (I have a Hawley retainer, a fixed retainer on my upper front teeth and Invisalign plastic retainers.)

Does the orthodontist choose which retainers I get or can I choose? Because personal I'd rather have the removable retainer/plastic retainer than the fixed retainer.

Every office is different, but generally if you have a preference the orthodontist can usually get you the retainer of your choice. There are some instances that getting a fixed retainer is highly recommended, and you'll have to ask your orthodontist specifically about your teeth.

Hi, what do you recommend the type of retainers i should wear? And also, before i had my permanent braces, i wore type 2 retainers. I don't really understand why i have a retainer before my permanent ones and how all my friends had permanent braces straight away. Is this beacause of the way my teeth are shaped? Could you explain that to me?

There are appliances that look like retainers that you can wear when you're young and they can help guide your permanent teeth into a better position. It sounds like you may have had this type of appliance before braces. Not everyone needs this type of early treatment with a removable appliance, and some doctors recommend just doing braces and skipping any type of removable appliance before braces. There are lots of ways to move teeth :)

It’s a good idea. If it’s a small filling the retainer usually will still fit well. If it’s a large filling or crown you may need to remake the retainer.

No there won't be any problem jut make sure you continue wearing those retainers after marriage. Only thing is retainers just don't let teeth shift back which requires time. I didn't wore my retainers for an year but now i am. Ther was change but after 1 week it got all okay so just don't worry and go ahead and enjoy the wedding.

You should be fine to leave the retainers out for 12 hours - not a problem :) Just make sure you don't go multiple days without retainers and you shouldn't have to worry about anything moving or shifting.

This is weird, all the people I know that have a perfect smile and had braces years ago none of them wears a retainer at all, I had never heard that thing had to be worn for life.

I have a plastic retainer for my top teeth as well with a permenant one on the top and bottom. Do I still need to wear the plastic one after a year?

Is it bad that I didn't wear them all day the first few months and straight away wore them at night only? My clear retainers don't look invisible at all. They're full of bubbles due to the not very neat looking moulds my dentist made.

Great informative video! I was diagnosed with class II (with crooked/clouded bottom teeth). The braced was removed on 5/26/21 and I had to sign the Clear Plastic Retainer(Your 1st one) agreement/instructions. One of the instructions states that I wear only at Night time. I also was told to wear only about 8-10 hrs/day. If wearing both Night & Day time will effect my bite. So, I'm confused now. Please advise would be much appreciate. Thank you.

I am getting my braces on the 15th of June it’s soon

I remember I lost my retainer and told them I lost them. My orthodontists receptionist then proceeded schedule me an appointment for 4 weeks after I lost them and got them a week later.

I have Permanent Retainer, but I also use the Hawley Retainer every night and I just ask my orthodontic to make me Clear plastic retainers. But the one I still use the most is the Hawley Retainer.

is it normal for your bite to not be the same in retainers vs without them on? my bite looks like an open bite when I have my retainers in but looks good without the retainers

Mine too, I guess cus the retainers are thick and make up for the space in between the teeth. The plastic ones right?

I had braces junior and senior year in high school. After wearing them for a year and a half I wore my retainers for a year and half to prevent my teeth from shifting. I stopped wearing them because I had skin problems. Once it started to clear my teeth shifted a little bit and ended up with a gap between my upper teeth but not as much as bigger before I had braces. Would I have to wear metal braces again or just wear the retainers?

if you wear the same retainers again it wont fit properly, iguess its worth a shot but ihad really slight shifting & got braces all over again, having had them twice. its a retreat for me & estimated time is 8 months

I have clear retainers and permanent retainers

I took off my braces 6 months ago... There after I wore metal retainer 24/7 for 6 months bt because of my retainer there is excess pressured applied on my teeth... Now my 2nd incisors teeth are displaced from its normal position.... What should I do?????

Do I have to wear first two retainers (you mentioned) or I can choose to wear permanent retainer for life time ?

The doctor will suggest you retainers according to your treatment

If you don't wear your retainer say after 3 months after braces are removed will teeth just go back to the original position pre braces or do you risk them getting worse than they were to start with?

I get my braces off in a month and have had em for 2 years and now I have to wear my retainers to keep them straight... I can live with that if they are able to be taken out of my mouth, I’m 13 years old turning 14, can I use I Invisalign?

depends on how bad your teeth are. It works on mild misalignment. But if you're teeth are severely misaligned you'll need traditional braces. Permanent retainer are nice it's just a single wire going over your teeth. Better than taking them off and putting them on again and again

I got an expose and bond, I only got braces to make space for my baby tooth, since my teeth were fine before will a retainer be necessary after my tooth comes down?

You only have to wear your retainer as long as you want your teeth to be straight 👍

@@nafisakhan5891 the retainer last based on how well you care for them. My orthodontist said to brush the retainer each night (no toothpaste, just with cold water and a toothbrush) and as long as you don’t lose them or break them you should be good. Replacement can cost up to a few hundred dollars so make sure you make them last as long as you can

i haven't worn the retainers i got from after braces in around 4 or 5 months. I tried them on and they still manage to fit but my bottom row have shifted places a fair bit. Can i correct them with my current retainers?

Usually retainers necessary to put for lifetime or couple of months? My 4 wisdom teeth would get extract after that scaling then braces procedure,then Retainers OMG how long will it take so I'll feel free😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I have fixed retainers in upper jaw and plastic retainers in lower jaw because of delay in delivery of retainers it was not fit in upper jaw.
