Ma'am didn't you said in the last videos that you can make fast progress by using the Paganini's secret? Is that method good for the beginners or no? Although miss Vivien told us that this method is ideal to implement it right from the very first violin month.

It's good to see a general picture of where we should be at. I'm kind of on track I guess, at just after the 2 year mark. I'm working on a piece called Loure by Pierre de Paepen from a book called 'Easy concert pieces'. My hardest to tackle was Allegro by Fiocco on which I spent months (started it December) and of course after a few months it was half the tempo with mistakes. My teacher sometimes challenges me which I think is also fine, that piece was probably way too hard. Another difficult piece I learned (1st part only) was Concertino in style of Mozart by Hans Millies. Super difficult (played it a little simpler like no spiccato or vibrato; only started vibrato recently). I did these around 1 - 1.5 year mark. I want to wait a year and perhaps try them again a bit, if I am doing everything right they should be considerably easier the second time around. Otherwise they are quite pretty pieces, after hating them throughout the first month of struggle I started to like them both. :) I do not practice every day and just 30m to 1 hour so it could be better. I don't have the mental fortitude after doing mental work 9 to 5 or 6. :(

Thank you so much. It's a bit disappointing at 59 to realise that I'm looking at aprox 5 years before I can play such beautiful pieces as you did. I will endeavour to succeed and appreciate the advice.

I am an adult student who started playing 7 months ago. I'm currently working on the Bach Minuet pieces. They sound so simple but are deceivingly hard for me!

Even though I loved each of the minuets from Bach, they all were extremely difficult for me. Each persons' abilities are different, so the difficulty for me was the string crossings in Minuets. The learning process of Gossec's Gavotte was even easier for me. So, yeah, Bach Minuets are hard 😞

I started my violin journey as an adult beginner exactly 1 year ago. With approx. 1 hour constant daily practice I am playing Handel Bourree and Rieding op35 student concerto ( all 3 mvmt) right now. After a lot of insecurities I really love my instrument and my beginner music by now

Thank you for this explanation. Great video with milestones. It gives some perspective.

@@violinlounge It has been very helpful. My teacher wanted me to play/learn the French Can Can and when listening to your video, i understood why it is so hard for me. So went back to the Ode to Joy. This is my level. Will try to play it in a more fluid manner and increase the tempo step by step. We need people like you: passionate about violin and providing simple and precise explanations/tutorials.

Hi Zlata! Thank you for this video. I'm 4 ½ years into playing. It's funny how you demonstrated quite exactly my first three years with the violin. My teacher likes to throw a good challenge. So I was practicing Accolay at the beginning of my fourth year. And now my newest piece is Beriot no 9.

I began 7 weeks ago. My first big piece is Pachebels Cannon in D. with 2.5hours plus of Violin Techniques, I have a full working version whilst I learn the whole piece in the background. I do nothing with out a Meteronome. It's a rapid progression however; it's alway 1 more thing to refine. 1) Learn the piece 2) work on intenation 3) work on the sight reading 4) add technique 5) add dynamics. in contrast it has made me a way better Irish Violin player in the process of doing violin techincal studies too.

I wish I had your video 65 years ago when I first started studying the violin. Now I am the viola section in our church orchestra and need to seriousy practice 5th position in 5 flats. I also assist on violin when needed.

Thank you for this video! I am learning violin because my daughter is taking lessons in the Suzuki style and I’m supposed to help her practice. I know absolutely nothing about music but the teacher showed me things I needed to watch for and correct during her practice and wanted me to video the lessons. I found a cheap violin and am hoping that if I understand the instrument, then maybe I will be able to help her better. I always thought lessons would be something I would drive her to and that I’d have to remind her to practice not correct her form and finger positions or remind her how to bow. It has gotten marginally easier for me and has shown me some little things like how sore you get. I was inclined to think she was just trying to avoid practice but violins are an adjustment. Just little things like that have helped me to be more understanding and I hope it lets her learn easier. She’s wanted to for so long!

The best tip i ever received is from a friend who is a violonist at the philharmonic in Romania. He told me that if i balance my third finger more on the left side of the tip i could easily reach the 4th finger and first,i've never felt my whole hand relaxed since then, not to mention that my intonation is crystal clear and the other notes on the adjacent strings are easy to reach.

Hi Zlata, a well presented and well demonstrated video covering people of all abilities playing the violin. Since I was a child the violin was my first love, but things happened my progress was poor and slow. I remember one of my teachers saying you have to be intelligent to study music and play the violin. I was never academic at School. I have taken normal unskilled jobs as well as taxi driving . One thing I have always enjoyed in music is composing music . It is easier to write it down hear it in your head. As I really haven't got the technique to even play some of my own compositions. I know what should sound like but can't reproduce it. Now I enjoy playing in sessions Irish music and English tunes and playing second fiddle to a singer guitarist. I do like early music renaissance and Baroque but steer clear of classical repertoire. I appreciate it but know I will never be able to play it. Alan Knights.

@@alanknights2779 thanks for sharing, I guess music is all about finding our own place and passion. Weird remark of your teacher as I know a lot of not-so-intelligent professional musicians 😂 and extremely intelligent students who really get in the way of themselves 😉

You have encouraged me on vibrato. I have had a lot of trouble getting it, that it's not unusual that I haven't been able to get it right away. I was in the orchestra in school for 5 years, but I am not at what would be considered a high level at all. I can play "Amazing Grace" I am playing for fun, if I pray it sounds better.

I use a metronome for bow technique and time purposes. I only practice tunes to piano accompaniment to monitor my pitch. I also flex scales and variations with meter on one and play all sections of the bow. Intonation I have perfect pitch in my ears. It’s my bowing I’m most attentive with

I'm taking my violin to get fixed today. Can't wait to get her back and get started. I'm very interested in this question too. I expect to be a slow learner but hopefully not too slow...lol

I’m an Irish music violin player but I love Beethoven. I learned classical 6 months 20 years ago. I’m learning on my own at the moment two weeks into playing again and because I know How To Practice I’m playing at a 2 year player in the space of two weeks. I bow practice 1 hour bowing technique and 1 hour song set list. Intonation isn’t an issue just be too hard on myself is my issue for my tissue. Twinkle twinkle is my warm up and audience ice breaker song 😂 it’s beautiful Ode to Joy is my favourite piece

I play easier pieces, but with expression and good tone. I do not have good vibrato. Pain issues prevent me from working on it much. But I can play expressively, using bow techniques. I record my playing, and then know what needs work. I'm picky, but as you said, that can be helpful 😊. I haven't progress at the speed you listed in the video. As a kid I spent 5 yrs in 1st position with no vibrato. Then started up again in my 30's. Progress is still slow, but I can get a nice tone and express with the bow. I probably won't be able to play complicated pieces. Too many physical issues now. I like the easier Baroque pieces in some of the Suzuki books, volumes 1-5. Some beautiful slow pieces that I know don't sound as nice as they would if I could do nice vibrato. Oh well....

I'm on month 2 of learning violin and have already learned the minuet piece- I'm about 2/3 pieces from finishing Suzuki book 1 . So I'm not sure exactly how accurate this is... but I am an adult learner so there should maybe be a disclaimer that this is a time reference for children?

It’s very individual and also some are faster in the beginning and others more late bloomers. And it depends on how precise you are.

I've been super frustrated lately I'm at the level where I could consider playing accolade and the Beethoven spring Sonata. And I'm playing the Bach double. But I'm frustrated with my intonation my Bowing and just everything in general sometimes. There are days when I feel like I'm doing great and then the very next day I feel like I can't do anything right is this normal?

I don't know if this is going to come across as a reassurement or a disappointment: it's perfectly normal. We all go through it! Some days it just doesn't work: I sometimes shoot videos of the most simple things and need a million takes. Practicing in flow can help get the tension out and get you in the moment to fix things bit by bit. Give it a Google search, it's not as woowoo as it sounds.

@@violinlounge My worst fault. I hate playing slow ! I know I need to buy I hear the performance tempo in my head and I just can't help it

I just want to put my progress here and I hope to see some others reply with theirs as well to hopefully improve together nicely I started Violin in 6th grade around 10 years old and got private lessons that same year I did Suzuki Book 1 and Oskar Rieding’s concerto in B Minor that same year and also went to a local intensive music camp Which after my teacher assigned a couple pieces on the side then jumped straight into Book 4 (which wasn’t that bad at all) because she does this for all of her students wishing to audition to the Youth Orchestra, this was in 7th-8th grade which Covid-19 hit and took a big stump After book 4 we went and did the Accolay Violin concerto and after begging we also did Praeludium and Allegro by Kriesler which I used for auditions my Freshman Year and got in We would then move onto Kablevsky whilst doing a couple movements of Bach like Presto with a few Rode Caprices on the side and now I’m finishing up Kablevsky and also moving onto the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto In summary Y1 - Suzuki Book 1, Rieding concerto Y2- Suzuki Book 4 Y3 - Suzuki Book 4 + Accolay Y4 - Praeludium and Allegro + Starting Kablevsky Y5- Finishing up Kablevsky and cleaning it for Solo Festival and starting Mendelssohn Ofc I did omit some of the smaller pieces in between and the orchestral stuff but I hope to see some replies of fellow students progress :D

I am on Suzuki vol. 6 and I cannot yet do vibrato. I've tried, but nothing. I take private lessons.

There are many different vibrato exercises and practice strategies. Maybe ask your teacher for a different one than you’re doing now.

Thanks. I can play very well without vibrato, but I have tried many exercises but I have not caught on to it. I can do the proper motion off of the violin, but not on it. @@violinlounge
