I am Brazilian, but I suppose that many foreigners like the way our language sounds because of the nasal sounds. Many people like to hear French, too, and they also have some nasal sounds. However these sounds are "hard" for people whose native languages are English, Spanish etc. Although Spanish is very similar to Portuguese, it's very easy to notice people from other Latin American countries, even after many years living in Brazil, because they can't pronounce nasal sounds well and also open sounds like "é", "ó" etc.

Lots of friendly Brazilian people here in Ireland. Plenty of opportunity to practice

That's true. Some Brazilians try to make more money in countries with a stronger currency (in general Europe and the US), but many return because they had fantasies in their minds. So, you'll always see different ones arriving and others "disappearing". Until before the pandemic, Ireland was between the options for some who wanted to "try their luck".

Eu com nove meses já podia falar com nativos brasileiros, eles dizem que eu tenho um sotaque muito bom. Minha metodologia foi escutar sempre as cancoes de Roberto Carlos, falar sempre só, e jogar no Duolingo.

Como falante nativo do espanhol/inglês, depois de dois meses consegui entender basicamente tudo e me comunicar um pouquinho (com o sotaque péssimo). Aos 6 meses já podia me virar com muita facilidade e me expressar bem melhor!

I learned Spanish to upper intermediate level without any formal classes. My method was using duolingo, speaking every day with Spanish friends, and watching Netflix in Spanish. I'm now learning Portuguese and while Spanish helps me understand portugués, it doesn't help me much to speak it. In fact sometimes I think it obstructs me because I'm never sure whether a word is the same or different in Spanish and Portuguese! Reading the comments it appears that most learners of Brazilian Portuguese are guys with Brazilian girlfriends 😂

I study Portuguese 6 days a week for 1.5 hours per lesson. It's very hard, I am 58 now. I can speak all numbers days months. Basic conversation. My techer was up front with me, she said 2 years to become good, but to be fluent, could take longer depending on how often you can study. I will not give up. I work hard 7 days a week. If I can do it anyone can. But enjoy it. If I don't enjoy I would stop or find a new techer. I am unable to study with you because time difference, as I am in the uk. But your KZread fantastic 👏

For me it took 4 months living in Brasil to speak fluently. I was really really comfortable after the year mark. If you're not practicing it daily I imagine it will take a much longer time.

If you're just starting Portuguese, enjoy the fact that learning this beautiful language will keep you discovering new things decades later. Enjoy the journey, focus on the process and don't worry too much about "how long it takes". I will say, though, that you're very lucky to have access to amazing content on KZread like Speaking Brazilian...I wish I had this when I first started years ago!

I have been studying Brazilian Portuguese for 1.5 years. The first year I wasn’t as consistent but for the past 6months or so I have been studying for hours on Duolingo and watching videos like this as much as possible and it’s hard. I understand so many words and phrases but I’m still not there. It’s just about being consistent and continue learning and always making time to learn and study more.

If I only listen to you speak Portuguese I can pick up on a few words, but when I read the Portuguese subtitles it’s very similar to reading in Spanish. I love how that helps me learn faster. Subtitles make it soooo much easier. Much love from the states, I’m Mexican and peruvian and I love Brazilian Portuguese it’s so beautiful to hear 😍

Na minha opinião, se quiser ser fluente em qualquer idioma, você terá que estudar pelo menos 2-3 anos. Óbviament é possível ter conversas básicas com menos tempo, mas a fim de assistir filmes ou conteúdo avançado, precisa passar muito tempo estudando , falando, e ouvindo português. Estou aprendendo português faz quase 2 anos e minha meta é virar o nível C2 em português, mas não tem limite de tempo. Estarei aprendendo essa língua pra sempre.

Na minha opinião pra aprender falar português depende com interesse pra aprender.. O quanto uma pessoa tem interesse vai conseguir mais cedo.. 😂 como eu aprendi.. Eu concordo completamente com voce. Estou aprendendo o portugues porque o meu amigo e brasileiro mas a gente nao mora num pais lusofono, significa que estou aprendendo sozinha ou com o meu marido ou com colegas ou amigos que falam portugues. Infelizmente nunca vou falar fluentemente mas agora sou capaz de escrever, entender e falar portugues com menos dificuldades e com um sotaque estrangeiro. Mas se eu tivesse a oportunidade de morar num pais lusofono acho que eu seria capaz de atengir um nivel muito mais avancado.

Fiquei surpreendido porque sua estimativa de tempos concorda ao 100% com minha experiência. Como falante nativo de espanhol levou 2-3 meses començar a falar e compreender e dois anos para se tornar fluente. Eu falo seis línguas e parece que sempre a gente precisa 2-3 anos para falar bem. I think that having Spanish as a mother tongue is a advantage cuz it's going to be easier than English or french.

It depends. For the vocabulary ( most words in Portuguese and Spanish are similar), it's excellent to be a native speaker of Spanish. But for the pronunciation, I think that English is better for you because this language doesn't have nasal sounds like Spanish. It's easy to recognize here in Brazil our neighbours who speak Spanish living in the country because they can't pronounce well nasal sounds (like Americans and others of English language) and also don't have "open" sounds like "é" and "ó". The French language, also latin, has less similar words, but they also have many nasal sounds, easier for the natives to pronounce in portuguese. I think that as we have most possible sounds in Portuguese, it's not so difficult for us to speak well other languages... :-)

I have been to Brasil 4 times, each time spending only 3 weeks, which I found insufficient to get much fluency in the language, so, this time, to give myself more likelihood of actually learning something, I am in Brasil (SC) for 3 months, enrolled in formal classroom Portuguese training, plus, living with a Brasilian family (as always.) I was relieved when the speaker said it would take two years to be fluent. My thoughts: 1) These presentations are the best available! The speaker speaks in a manner that is easier to understand, and the double "legendas", sub-titles in both English and Portugues, make understanding easier. 2) I particularly valued the presentation on "contractions", as some of phrases people use in everyday speaking are not found in any dictionary, 2) Of course, the nasal sound is unnatural for Engish speakers, but it is also not OK to disregard it excessively, either, as people cannot understand you unless you make sounds that are familiar to them. So, I am trying to be more "nasal". Too much of sotaque hinders communication. 3) My last week of my 3-month stay will be to attend a 1-week "Encontro" with Brasilian professionals, so that will be a test of my improvements. 4. Next, will be how to continue learning when I am back in the States. I will examine the course content here. I plan to return next year for a long stay (until my Visa runs out. kkk)

Eu me considero fluente depois 4-5 mêses de estudando português, 5 horas cada semana mais praticando o dia inteiro na escola e em casa. Eu concordo contigo que muitas coisas vão influenciar quanto tempo que cada pessoa leva para ficar fluente em português. Pues, ya hablo español ( no 100 por cierto) y estoy estudiando portugués al mismo tiempo. Sí me ayuda mucho cuando aprendo uno u otro sí depende como mi energía mental esté justo después del trabajo en la mañana y tras de eso.( me ayuda mucho como comparo las reglas gramáticas entre los dos, y sabe que son similares y no son tan difícil. Aunque todos idiomas tienen sus propios dificultades en cada uno de sus propios.) Desde que mi capacidad de concentración no es bien y corta, solo tengo que una hora o menos que ella parar estudiar una lección y escucha a los podcasts y leer. No cuento cuántas horas que yo hago en todo que hago. No me importa mucha en eso. Para mí, aprender los lenguajes es un maratón de vida y estoy contenta sobre eso.😊 Edit: Também, eu gusto do seu video muito. É motivador e inspirador. Continue com o trabalho fantástico!

I haven't been dedicating much time to learning- but I did have an initial tutoring lesson with someone and she said with my natural ability I could be fluent in a few months. I'm learning brazilian portuguese and I haven't learnt a second language before to a level of what can be considered proficient but my guess on this is that the first 6 months of study will be slow but as time goes by as you persist your knowledge will grow exponentially as you start to listen to extended conversations and tv shows with sub titles or if you have friends to speak with then it can start to become rewarding. I am doing about an average of one hour a day for the past four months and it feels like doing a jigsaw puzzle and I feel that when I get a a certain point of knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar it will start to get easier and more rewarding and as I said the knowledge acquirement will start to grow at a faster rate. At least I hope so. Brazilian Portuguese is a very pleasant language and also a very useful language so it's something I will enjoy learning for both the ambition of learning a second language to a level where it is rewarding and have a decent ability to understand it and communicate and with a view of living in Portugal or Brazil.

I'll be in Curitiba in a few months, so I'll definitely be taking all three of Virginia's courses before heading over haha

I agree that Spanish speakers cannot skip the basics. I would add that they need more practice learning the sound system to write and speak well. For Spanish speakers, you want to take them from "You speak well" to "Where are you from?"

Ótimo vídeo! Há uns 3 anos passei uma semana na França (numa casa de franceses) e pude aprender muito! Senti que com uns três meses lá eu já ia conseguir ter uma conversa relativamente legal em francês (longe de fluência)! Estou numa jornada com o inglês desde minha adolescência, mas há 1 ano e meio me comprometi a estudar pelo menos uma hora por dia pra chegar à fluência de vez. Escuto podcasts todos os dias, converso com várias pessoas no meu dia a dia em inglês, tenho um canal no KZread em que falo sobre música brasileira apenas em inglês e dou aulas em inglês também. Mas ainda penso que pra ficar fluente ainda vou precisar de mais tempo e uso da língua! Adorei esse vídeo! Obrigado! 👏

Eu me enamorei com lingua brasileira na primeira vez que eu a ouvi, quase 20 anos atras. É a lingua mais bonita do mundo todo. Em setembro do ano passado me inscrevi no curso para iniciantes é agora estou matriculada curso intermediário. Os cursos são interessantes e divertidos e com eles aprender a língua é mais fácil e também mais rápido.

Quanto tempo leva para aprender português? kkkkkkkk eu nasci no Brasil e tô aprendendo até hoje...

Concordo com vc, o aprendizado das línguas tem que ser constante, você nunca vai parar de aprender novas frases, palavrinhas, gírias etc, então a minha recomendação é sempre ter muita paciência, ser dedicado e ter esse hábito de aprender o português o tempo todo, eu comecei aprendendo com as músicas do Roberto Carlos, tive a oportunidade de conhecer muitas pessoas brasileiras que tem me ajudado com o meu aprendizado, hoje posso me comunicar melhor e entender quase todo, sou do México mas amo aprender novas línguas, português é uma delas, sou professor de inglês mas devo dizer que a gramática portuguesa é complicada mesmo. Eu sou Ingles tentando apprender Portuguese Brasileiro. Eu acho que “ fluente” significa coisas diferentes para cada persoa. Verdadeiro fluente e uma padrão Eu não espero realizar nunca ! 🤣 Mas se Eu posso conversa dia por dia facilmente com tudo mundo isso vai ser ótimo!

Olá Virginia! As únicas 3 coisas que nós precisamos é: prática, prática, prática. A prática faz o mestre. Eu aprendi português quando eu era quase um adolescente, meu pai ensinou-me a língua porque ele morou no Brasil dois anos. Lembrei quando ele trouxe-me revistas, a turma da Mônica (coisa que eu adoooreiii) e muitos audiocassetes com música brasileira. Acho que com esforço e dedicação podemos nos tornar fluentes em 2 anos mais ou menos (que também foi a minha experiência). Com o francês, foi distinto...estudei no exterior e com muitas interrupções por muitos fatores, consegui me tornar fluente em 4 anos da minha vida. Todos os dias aprendemos muitas coisas novas, tens razão.

Es súper similar al español entendí casi todo lo que dijo sin leer el subtítulo en inglés lo difícil creo es saber acomodar las palabras pero cuando alguien más las habla si es entendible

It does not matter what language you want to learn or why you want to learn it, even if you know your grammar and syntax inside out it will be the size of your vocabulary that will determine how fluent you are even in the language of your own country where you was born. I was born in south London England in the year 1959 so I'll be sixty three this year, I didn't come from an academic back ground I am just an ordinary cockney rebel, I first travelled to Thailand when I was twenty three years old and did not really start learning it until I was twenty five, I just used one of those old fashion courses with tapes and books but I taught myself how to read right from the beginning I learnt the Thai alphabet 44 consonants 12 main vowels plus 26 combination vowels also tone marks repeat signs and accents. Now I have lived in Thailand for almost ten years after travelling back and forth many times over the years I can even sing songs in Thai but the only reason I can do this is because I learnt how to read Thai script, I would get a Thai song book out get my guitar out or sit at my piano, then listen to recordings of the songs I wanted to learn and follow the lyrics from the script in the books. At the moment I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese on Duolingo, when I go through the basic lessons in the course I write every sentence out in English and Portuguese in my own handwriting and this is the most important thing you must do if you really want to always improve in any language, don't be fooled into thinking that using a keyboard on your laptop or a touch screen on your android phone is the same as using CALIGRAPHY : The former is mechanical and robotic the latter is a pure art form. Also I read through and listen to the Duolingo stories which is the most useful part of the App, and even with these I write out the vocabulary in the boxes that occurs at the end of each story, even though I have never ever been to Brazil I'm watching my favorite music videos from Brazil like Djavan or Jorge Ben and Luiz Melodia just to mention a few and I'm noticing that I am understanding a hell of a lot more than I ever thought possible, when you learn something new you need to repeat it two hundred times correctly before it becomes automatic according to learning science, so my honest heart spoken advice to anyone out there anywhere in the world is learn to read right from the start and believe me you will never regret it for as long as you live, so all I can say to all you language learners out is start reading and writing more and โชคดี Boa Sorte or in plain English good luck to everyone. P.S Babies don't know grammar and syntax so how do they learn? I'll tell you by being a papagaio.

My mother language is German and Russian and I've learnd English Italian and French in school. Now I'm learning Spanish for 1 year just by yt and with some Spanish friends. I can understand most of what she said without studying Portuguese haha but I guess it's bc she's speaking slowly and in full sentences

Boa pergunta! Eu recomendo aprender um idioma de cada vez, especialmente se foram similares. Acho que aprender pelo menos o básico de um idioma antes de começar a estudar um novo idioma é recomendável.

Para mim isso que voçe diz e muito cierto. Faz uns anos atras eu quer aprender alemán pero não posso entender o alfabeto jajaja. Porém com a lengua portugués e mais fácil apesar de que tenho que mejorar em a gramática muito, muito. :)

Olá! I recommend you study one at least for a few months before starting the second one because it can be confusing.

Eu comecei de aprender o Português quando eu apaixonei com a Capoeira muitos anos atrais. Eu sou Asiano de Cingapura e falo inglês. Eu adoro a cultura Brasileira e eu quero aprender e entender mais. Eu tive uma professora antes mas hoje eu só usar um app no ipad para continuar aprendendo. Há alguns básicos e fundamentos que eu não entendo ainda.
