Useful tips on growing potatoes this is my first time growing them. I used kitchen potatoes that were growing shoots and planted out in a large pot. Potatoes now growing for about two months…lots of leaves at the top it’s a good idea to keep a note of the date planted 😀

Those baskets are great mate. I learned building up wasn't required in buckets when last year I got lazy and just topped them and had same crop size. I built up because my grandfather did.

In buckets it doesn't matter, in the ground it makes sense if there's danger of frost or if the potatoes start popping out, so to stop them from going green

What a treat. Straight forward information, and practical advice. I found your article in my gardening magazine, and was very impressed with the kitchen sink idea! I’ve just taken over the gardening from my husband who can’t get around much now, and I’m still learning of course. The most important bit was when you said I didn’t have to earth up the potato’s! I’m trying my hand at tomatoes and potato’s this year, so thanks so much.

Hi Ann, glad you liked the article, I write for that magazine each month. Sorry to hear about your husband, it must be hard for him. The main reasons to earth up potatoes is to protect them from frost and to stop any potatoes growing at the surface from turning green

New to your channel. No clue how I got here but happy. LOL. Planning to start next week for fall harvest. Will use organic potatoes (only to ensure sprouting - I'm not obsessed with organic even though that's what I wind up doing) and buckets, but will swath each bucket in shade cloth. This is a very hot climate until mid to late October. Never did frost last year. So I do have to control for our heat for the next few months. I love how clearly and concisely you presented this.

Shukran Monty Great video my friend ,Desiree are an indeterminate potato and can and will grow off the stem and not just from the root zone, but with the British climate and short growing season you will be lucky to get small baby potatoes forming on the stem. I was lucky a few years back and got a few egg sized form on the stem,Not worth the extra work in the uk determinate grow at the root zone indeterminate can grow off the stem as well as the root zone Khuda Hafiz

Thanks Bob really thoughtful comment, I've read that in a few American blog style pages, all the British sources never mention that and tend to focus on earthing up as a way of protecting tubors from going green not increasing yield. I also tried this quite early on growing in tyres stacking them 4/5 tyres high I only ever got potatoes growing at level 1/2 never any higher. Hope you are well and safe

Nice video. Do you not add any fertiliser though? I use 30L bags for maincrop potatoes and just grow Sarpo Mira now. Always a varied crop, not always good. What do you get from a main crop bucket just using homemade compost if you don't mnd me asking?

the compost I use is home made and is quite rich so will last a while, for my main crops usually grow in woodchips on the ground I've got some harvest videos from last year. the buckets I'm hoping to get about 3 kilos per bucket. I'll fertilise with some homemade liquid feeds as the plants grow

Thank you for posting this. Does it matter what kind of wood chips you use? I realize you wouldn't want to use chips from lumber, but is there a type of wood that is just NOT recommended. I've got a BOAT LOAD of pine around here that is old and breaking down. I just want to make sure pine is safe for growing potatoes.

  • @MyFamilyGarden

I'd be wary about anything that is from treated timber or things like black wallnut untill it has fully broken down as it can be allelopathic, pine is fine to use most of my woodchips are from conifers

Salam brother I'll be trying gardening for the first time soon having been inspired by your videos. I'll be getting compost the buckets and woodchips online and hand a few questions if that's ok: 1. Where would you recommend getting the potato seeds from? 2. Which type of potato is best for chips? I know you've mentioned Desiree/king Edward's before for example 3. How often should you water the potato 4. Is now or any time during the year a suitable time to grow potatos or have I missed the summer for it!? JazakAllah kheir

Walaikum salaam, mashallah that's really good to hear. 1) I use Wilko's for seed potato it's good value for money 2) Maris Piper is the chip shops favourite. But I prefer red potatoes 3) enough to keep the soil moist but not wet 4) you might still get away planting an early variety now, like Duke of York, they did well for me this year But the best time to plant is in spring

Salam brother, unfortunately I missed the timing last year for potatos (couldn't find seeds being sold) but time flies and we're coming to the season again so I am just preparing! 1. I see you have planted the first earlies here in two layers - to confirm, did you do that for your first earlies/main crop? Just checking as I can only find seed potatos as 1kg minimum so trying not to waste them 2. Bit of a noddy question but I understand seed potatos are potentially posionous. When I eventually harvest how am I supposed to know which one was the seed potato so I make sure I don't harvest that? When I do harvest potatos, can they be washed and cooked/used immediately or should they be brushed/stored first? 3. As I can afford a little more to optimise the potato results, would you recommend fertiliser and if so, when and which one would work? I appreciate we can't use fish, blood and bone for edibles 4. I have cats at home and I have a feeling they will play around with the potatos if left indoors on a windowsill. Can they be left outside on the windowsill in the garden to chit or is that not advisable? Thanks again

Was alaikum Assalaam,Brother. Can I make my own wood chips for growing potatoes and for ground covering.some tips as they are expensive in the garden centres. And how do you you use dry leaves in compost making and mulching?

  • @MyFamilyGarden

Walaikum salaam absolutely make your own, you're right they're way too expensive to buy. If you can contact some tree surgeons them they normally give them away for free. I've done a few videos on making compost, this one is using just grass and leaves kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGx4m8mvf8-ne7g.html
