Captain Caveman I agree that sometimes people who drive Japanese car think lesser of other brands. I myself sometimes fall victim to that mentality. I like my Japanese cars because that are cheaper to fix, maintain and generally parts are always available. I’ve owned Chrysler’s in the past and they all broke down quicker than my Japanese cars, that’s why I hold a certain grudge against Chrysler’s.

I added up all the costs on cars I have bought since 1974 (45 years) and it's about $10,000. I suppose I have spent more than that in repairs, most of which I have done myself. The thing I drive now, I have had for 18 years. Bought it when it had 264,000 miles on it. Moral of the story is this: If you don't care too much about what things look like, and you want to get the most for your money, I suggest you learn how to work on what you drive and stick with it, unless there is some known problems with what you have that you want to avoid. Just thinking about it, suppose I spent $20,000 in repairs and $10,000 in cars over 45 years? That is still less than $1,000 a year, a lot less. Pretty good deal, seems to me. If you keep what you have in good mechanical condition, it should go smoothly down the road and nothing should be clunking. It should steer tight and brake nice. What's not to like? If it drives nice, why not keep it? An older one can still be a pleasure to drive, even if it looks bad on the outside. It's all about maintenance.

Bought my 2003 Ford Taurus SES in 2003 with a couple thousand miles, today I have 757,000 miles with original engine and transmission that has not been rebuilt. Today car would not start, it had started and drove great, but after parking, turned ignition key and nothing happened, dash board lights came on but no crank. Watched video from Scott on which he said " if you turn the key to the run position and the engine light comes on, then your getting power to the PCM, i turned the key to run, but the engine light did not illuminate, so because I watched Scotty's video I knew no power was the problem, checked PCM fuse and it had blown, changed with the fan fuse and it cranked right up. Then I put another hundred plus miles on my car, on my way to a million.

I've got a 99 Acura CL 3.0 and it's been great! Only a couple of minor issues which were easy to repair. The mileage is pretty poor (maybe 16-17 mpg) & the transmissions were ticking time bombs (from what I hear) so I swap out the fluid every other oil change. All in all a great car with enough power to get me through Chicago traffic!

Good advice as usual. I drive a 1994 rat Acura Integra with 220,000 miles. I've been consistent with the maintenance (synthetic yearly oil change driving low short trip miles, OEM Honda trans fluid) and it's been reliable. I drive it conservatively. I changed the suspension and ball joints about three years ago after they wore out by having a cheap local mechanic do it who works out of his garage but is Lexus ASE master certified. Needs a new AC compressor that I have been reluctant to install due to age and desire to change cars. Plan on upgrading to a Lexus IS in the future. I repainted it last year with Duplicolor spray can paint in a garage close to the original color (a red color). That seemed like a no brainer but I'm glad to hear it was a good decision. Engine oil seals leak a little but is managed well with the High Mileage oil additives (usually wears off at the end of the oil lifespan and starts leaking more which I live with and watch. She is due for a timing belt change in the spring and that's probably the last major service I plan to do.

I had the original transmission rebuilt and it lasted about a year before getting it replaced with a used transmission... The second transmission lasted almost 2 years. They both had the same issues. I read on a forum for Acura vehicles that there was some kind of bad design with the transmission on the Acura CL 3.0 and other Honda Accords of that era and finally got rid of the damn thing. It was such a smooth ride and man did it have power & great on gas. Wish it was the 4 cyl with a manual, those are bullet proof; would have kept it to this day if it was.

Must have been a v6, fluid needs to changed every 30k and no flooring it regularly as that will kill it with the quickness.

My 98 3.0 CL blew 3 transmissions. Gave up on it at 215k when it blew. Donated it.

I've been waiting to see a CL on this channel. My 98 2.3CL is at 185k and has been a pleasure to own. It's extremely simple to work and parts are abundant and affordable.
