Description
Can you run a house furnace off a 48 volt battery? Yes. Here I show you have a 48v LiFePO4 server rack battery can run your home furnace. I'm using the Growatt 3000 SPF 3000TL LVM-ES inverter connected to a RUIXU 48V LFP or LiFePO4 server rack battery for this test. Earlier I installed a Generator Plug on my Furnace so I can run the furnace off a generator or a furnace( • backup FURNACE PLUG - ... )

Recent subscriber. Really great content. It helps me develop a mental plan of how to address power needs of current appliances and load needs. Also helps me plan a path of replacement appliances or additions and in what order. I've watched several older vids and the comment section is helpful & polite. Several comments expressed the idea to have several smaller systems. Each dedicated to particular needs (refrig, lights, security etc). It was a real eye opener. Im embarrassed to say but ive been interested in solar for 15 years+ and I'd never considered doing that. My mindset had been simply size up the # of panels, get new cables, larger inverter etc etc. Thanks for creating the channel. Its very practical and relateable.

I have the same growatt inverter and find the % of battery left can be misleading. If you compare the battery voltage when the Growatt says 50% to a typical LifePO4 charge curve, I think you will find that the battery is lower than you think. I have my doubts that it would go another 24 hours at 49%. You should actually test it.

That's interesting. With my setup I have closed loop communication so the battery is telling the growatt how much power is left. I have set mine up so it won't start beeping at 30% battery life. I think the default setting is it beeps at 30% and then turns off at 25%. I have mine set so I can go all the way down to 5%

The first step in going solar is to purchase efficient appliances. I have similar goals as you but before powering a inefficient system, Im researching what is possible to convert my traditional furnace to dc. I am looking for a dc blower motor, the transformer shouldnt be too hard. As for a fridge, some rare fridges use r134, Id like to retrofit a regular fridge to a 24 volt dc compressor. Then run these test. I wonder if bypassing ac invertion will eliminate the need for extra batteries/panels...

I did a test with my furnace. I also have a nest smart thermostat that records how long the furnace is actually blowing heat. I tested it on a somewhat cold night (I live in San Diego) and the furnace was on for 3 hours over the night and morning. I guess my point is when doing these tests its nice to have a smart thermostat that records the time that the furnace is on.

May also be helpful to mention that this is a gas furnace and not an electric furnace in the title of the video. Looks like electric furnaces use 10 to 15 KW hours so that 5 KW battery would not be able to run it for even an hour.

I would personally buy a dual fuel inverter generator with the $500. I've been in scenarios where I had to use my portable generator to charge my power banks. One time I could not start it with gasoline even after routine maintenance and switched it over to propane and started. Anyway you only run the generator for the amount of time it needs to charge the battery. In my opinion totally worth it especially during winters where the peak solar hours are greatly reduced if any available at all for days. Great video btw.

Great test, Ray. Thanks for sharing. What was the ambient temperature when you took the test? An alternative between running a generator the whole time and buying more solar panels, is the "EG4 Chargeverter" You can basically hook it up to any generator, charger up your battery in like 1-2h or so without wasting bunch of gas and run the furnace for another couple days. I have a 7KW whole house generator that I will be converting, so it only chargers my battery when the grid is down AND my panels are not keeping up with the demand. It's currently for $399 at SS. Would love to see you test it in detail. Many thanks and God bless. Edit: Since you ran the furnace from the battery, did you have any issue with neutral-ground bonding?

My system is still being built in a backyard shed so it sits on standby during the week as I can only get back to it on the weekends. I have 4 packs for a total of 19.2 kWh. I found out that each pack can only detect >0.5A so I have to draw at least continuously about 100-200 watts for the SOC on the batteries to be accurate. The pack dies a few times at >90% SOC before I caught on!.... wont have this problem once I have more continues draw devices.

Thank you for putting this video out for us. I just have a question about the pinout for your communication cable. I have 2 Growatt SPF3000LT LVM-V48P and I cannot get them to communicate Setting Option 05 to L!I and Option 36 to L52. I just get Error 04 and error 20 no communication. From what I read in the RUIXU manual CAN is just Pin 4 & 5 on battery side to pin 4&5 on inverter side. Growatt support says that the communication protocols are the same on SPF3000-ES as the SPF3000LT LVM48-P but no matter what I try I cannot get it to communicate with the Battery BMS.

You definitely can. There is a small Communication cable that comes with your battery. It's basically just a short ethernet cable. You simply use that connection cable between the 2 batteries and then on your second battery or non Master battery You put all the dip switches down. And then the communication will work. You can follow this same procedure for a third or fourth or 5th or sixth battery. Any non Master battery will have all of the dip switches down. Hope that makes sense.
