How local communities helped restore the Atlantic Rainforest | WILD HOPE

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, Mauricio Ruiz has turned his love for nature into action by working with the community to reforest a critical stretch of the nation’s most endangered forest, and by using drones to help him reach his goal of planting 15 million new trees.
Mauricio created the Institute for Environmental Preservation, ITPA, when he was just 14 to fight back against rampant deforestation. With government and private funding, and a law in place that protects the remaining forest, Mauricio shows us what 25 years of civilian-led action looks like. Locals are paid to extinguish illegally set fires and to operate a nursery that grows 100,000 trees a year. They raise 58 native species critical for biodiversity and convince private landowners to reforest their land.
Mauricio knows scaling-up will be the only way to combat continued forest loss and has set an ambitious new goal to plant 15 million trees. Fortunately, he’s partnered with a technology company, MORFO, that has the experience and tools needed to accomplish it: agricultural drones. If the approach works, Mauricio can cut costs and time by planting 50 times faster than by hand, and still rely on citizen work to prepare and monitor newly forested ground.

    Yay! New episode :) Great as always! And so important, to show what is possible, and actually being done, instead of the constant flow of doom that we are mostly fed with... Without this balance it is easy to get paralyzed.

    We are having amazing success in restoring the same Atlantic Rainforest, relying only on the seeds produced by the surviving plots of original forest It all started in the 1990's when our local government started enforcing the Riparian Forest Law Since then, it's just amazing the number of plant species that have come back As for the fauna, we are in a very advanced stage of restoration, as evidenced by the presence of jaguars that prey on our cropfields We are achieving a situation where we have a mosaic of high-yield cropfields intertwined with rainforest corridors, proving that food production can coexist with conservation But all of these achievements are highly threatened by the proposed construction of small hydroelectric dams, which are an environmental disaster in themselves

    There has to be a better way to supply humans with heat & energy instead of burning down a forest to make coal?

  • @lynnrolaf7422

    @lynnrolaf7422

    I hate to say this, but the part of the video that talked about turning the forests to coal was in reference to burning down the trees to make way for grasslands to feed livestock. Not for harvesting the trees for firewood. They just burned them down. Which makes the entire process even more disgusting. 😢
