How leather is made

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Leather is one of the earliest crafts, dating back thousands of years. The hides and skins come from many parts of the world to be used in realizing car interiors, sofas and armchairs. To keep it always smooth and nice, you have to take care of it.

    Who would have thought this entire process from receiving the original skins to the finished product was this complex? I have always loved leather and now clearly see why it is priced accordingly. It gives one a whole new perspective and appreciation when putting on your favorite leather jacket.

    Im surprised that the skill and hard work of the slaughtermen involved in this process wasn't mentioned..The amount of skill it takes to do this is really under apreciated . For example if a slaughterman angles his knife a few degrees the wrong way can easily damage this , at this stage very fragile hide. Then the hides classification is reduced as is the price. One knifemark in the wrong place can half the price of a hide. So thumbs up to the under apreciated men on the front line.

  • @Hattonbank

    @Hattonbank

    That is done in the abattoir not by the tannery. Most well equipped abattoirs strip the hides from the carcass, not by knives, but by clamps attached either side of the neck which are then hydraulically or electrically pulled down, stripping the hide off the carcase in one smooth operation taking only 4-5 seconds.

    This is a very condensed and simplified view of the tanning process,chrome leather takes up to 18 days from desalting to finishing, since we work with a natural product the process and formulation of chemicals has to be adjusted on a regular basis to obtain a uniform product in texture,color, physical properties,not an easy task.I 'm glad I'm retired, I worked as a technician for over 40 years.

Did lots of other jobs there too!. not a fun time in my life. But we all had to make a living didn't we.

Now, if you're a person who doesn't listen to heavy music then I can understand how bad that last bit may sound. I promise I'm not a horrible human being in real life lol Most of us aren't. I’ve never worked in the “wet” process but worked on a spray line, presses, drums and measuring in the “Central Leatherstocking region” in upstate NY! At one point probably about 100 years ago or more there were more than 400 leather shops here!

    @@mwankhalil5366 In the dehairing mixers is about 8 hours. The lime drums 12-24 hours. Chrome drums about 8, Color Drums about 4 hours. The dry mill drums for softening leather 1-3 hours. That is what I remember from the little time I worked in the "Wet End". I was mainly a dry end employee. I spray line, presses, drums aka mills

    @@peterjb5848 making leather ready for sale starts with skinning an animal. It's simple and understandable. Everything before that isn't controlled by the leather factory. The factory does decide which hides they will take and from which animal, that's how the process starts. :)

    BEAUTIFUL video! Dear Sir, Ma'am, can I please be able to DIRECTLY PURCHASE some VERY LARGE hides [soft, preferably....but if not, its okay...i can also take the stiffer hides] and I was wondering if you would be able to kindly ask if you can be able to dye certain hides for me in different colors?...one would be to have a large hide is 24K Gold shiny patent leather hide and another hide I'd also like in the Platinum Silver Shiny patent leather? [I think that's when the hide is like PRESSED FIRMLY till its like really shiny?] Anyways, those are just a few that I really need and I was hoping thy I could kindly buy some if these DIRECTLY from THIS particular leather-prep company? I really hope that you can kindly let me know in a reply? Thank you kindly...and God Bless!
