the only thing i can think of is that the owner forced the gm and the coach to sign cousins... they didnt want cousins and fell in love with penix in the process...., so lets find a way to persuade Blank, rationalize the pick so that he would be ok with it.

Bingo !! 🎯. If they see Penix as a future star and perennial pro bowl qb, then you take him if your qb is 36 conking off an injury. Just because you suck doesn’t guarantee a pro bowl qb will be available when you pick , you could get a Pickett or an ej Manuel , or a Zach Wilson when you’re on the board. You never know how it will all stack up .

ITs not rocket science, Pennix was a top QB prospect and he slid in their eyes. ITs the QB position. You don't pass on that. Packers have shown it and have had franchise QB play going of for 30 years now. Other organization are scared to show the same but FAlcons are showing they aren't.

If it pans out for the Falcons it will make me laugh because of the histrionics we have seen over the pick. Falcons don't owe Cousins anything, they already giving him $100mln (coming off an injury at 36), and Kirk is man enough to deal with it, he''ll be fine, and I could imagine him and Penix getting on very well. Was it weird? - yes. Is it definitely stupid - no, we have to see.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kirks agent is already exploring potential future trade scenarios for his client. The bottom line is that this is the absolute last thing that Cousins wanted, the Falcons head coach and brass are trying their best to smooth it out. But this is a genuine QB controversy, and they created it.

Word leaked out that the only offer Kirk got was for 80 million dollars from the Raiders, however Kirk's agent told the Falcons that the offer was for 150 million. This is similar in some ways to when the Packers picked Jordan Love. In reality I think it worked out and it was a good call but Rodgers wanted out of Green Bay after that. But right now if I could have Love or Rodgers I’d take Love mostly due to age and salary. Rodgers is a great passer but ultimately he won’t help the Jets really. Rodgers is probably gone after this season. Meanwhile the Packers are looking like they’ll make some noise with Jordan.

I love that are still people who want to come in and support the Falcons drafting Penix and using all sorts of mental gymnastics. “Kirk’s 36.”, “He’s coming off a serious injury.”, “He’s only had one playoff win his whole career.” Then why the hell did your team sign him, especially for (at least) $100m, when he’s, in your mind, just a bridge QB? There’s only two scenarios that explain why the Falcons drafted Penix. 1. They had always planned to draft a QB in the first round in 2024. If true, then signing Cousins to that contract would be the dumbest decision they could have possibly made. 2. Like how Florio and Simms said: they wanted Daniels, realized they couldn’t get him, pivoted to Kirk, tried out Penix and like what they saw, panicked and reached for him with the 8th pick in fear of another team like Minnesota or Denver for LV drafting him. Still a dumb decision because they should have just made their focus in drafting one of the QBs that could have been available at #8. Seems like they were just flying by the seat of their pants.

I agree - if the Falcons made a mistake it was taking Cousins over Minshew. But, at the time they didn’t know they would like Penix so much or take him at 8. That has been established by Fontenot. This is unconventional, but its not catastrophe. 9.6% of cap this year. 15% of cap next year. After that, percentages say Cousins will retire or be traded, if he wants to play. The cap hit is marginal in 2026 and 2027. Penix will be playing at the start of 2026, at the latest. In the meantime, if Cousins can’t play or can’t play up to his previous standard they have a QB to rely on. Can we move on now?

@@Ninja_Skillz Wrong. His salary this year is about $67 million. That is not the cap. The cap hit is just 9.6% of the total cap (that is from OvertheCap). The cap hit next year is 15%. His combined average salary for 2024 and 2025 is $45 million a year, which is 8th largest (so far) for active QB’s. It will be about 10th largest once Dak Prescott and one or two others are extended.

Florio is missing the point. He's all wrapped up in Cousins being sold on Atlanta and then being backstabbed. He got 100 million guaranteed to come to Atlanta. Hes an aging 36 year old (in August '24) coming off an Achilles tear. Look what happened to Ryan in Atlanta. He hit 36 and was done. The Falcons remember that. Plus Cousins hasnt won a damn thing. He's a good QB but he cant single handedly lift a team. The Falcons were smart to draft the heir apparent . So what if Penix sits for 1 or 2 years and LEARNS. So what if Penix is 24 now. The Falcons have an insurance policy for 1-2 years if Cousins is bad or gets hurt. Cousins will be the starter at Atlanta i think for 2 years max and thats if he's healthy and good. Plus the Falcons probably going to get whacked for tampering and wont be able to procur a high level QB in the next couple years especially if they improve. Florio keeps harping about the money this 67 million. Ok the Falcons overpaid this year but werent going to get a decent starting caliber QB for less than 30 million. The cap hit is way less the next 2 years and Falcons can cut or trade him if need be.

The logic of the pick was sound in a couple ways. Shouldn't have a Top 15 pick when they do need a replacement to draft a QB that's done what only he and Mahomes have done in college. Then of course, why does anyone with half a football brain expect Cousins to make a minimum of 34 out of 34 regular season starts over the next 2 years? I'd be shocked if he at the very least doesn't miss a game here, a few games there. Then what if he reinjures the Achilles? Just cash it in, say we'll use our next years Top 10 to find somebody? Most teams chuggin along, lose their starter are effed. There are exceptions, but they call them exceptions because they are...exceptions.

cousins should have known his entire lackluster career that he’s a glorified overcompensated bridge qb and any team will look to upgrade longterm when the opportunity pops up. The vikings except the clueless hc, were praying cousins would leave, and now the falcons wisely potentionally got their future franchise qb. cousins seems to be a bright guy who understand patterns. Hey cousins, the falcons paid for a somewhat competitive team qb, now has their future, which you know no team angling for an eventual deep playoff team can get there with you as qb. When your former hc has to tell you to throw the football, then it’s clear you have a ceiling. Bank heisting Kirk.

Funny a “stud” pass rusher didn’t go in this draft till what 14/15 and even then he has “injury history”. This pick was clearly for this future. Almost the rest of the draft was defensive line😂 Rah created multi sack guys in LA & we still have Grady Onyamata and now like 8 2-4 round pass rushers on the roster and the offseason ain’t over yet. And Kirk will get over his feelings 😂 with that 100 mil. Swear these guys be making up bs pre draft stories and allegations

You beating a dead horse now. Juust stop with this. It's a business and a business decision out of his control. It's about money and winning and Kirk knows no matter it's out of his control. As a business Falcons know that once an athlete is injured they are never 100% of what they previously were anytime soon. And injuries of this time takes more than a year to completely heal. He is still going thru rehab at this point too. Anyone that's ever had a hamstring tear can tell you as an athlete the side effects last longer than a year, much less this injury more serious. The best thing Atlanta Falcons could do is secure the most NFL ready QB to lockdown the QB ever being a question anymore. Let it go. Don't cry because Penix did not go to the Vikings, Mike ...let it go...it's a dead issue. I had already seen Kirk Cousins as "damaged goods" and ATL paid way too much for him. Kirk got his money no matter if he never starts a game for ATL, got paid more than he is worth as damaged goods. Cousins goes down we are screwed again. GREAT DECISION TERRY AND STAFF !!!
