You can also switch between Katakana input and Hiragana input using Alt+Caps and Ctrl+Caps respectively. That way you can quickly go back and forth if, say, you have to type in a foreign word or name.

Explaining the keyboard shortcut with Tilda to get out of English input mode makes you an absolute rockstar.

I already knew most of this but that tip for automatically adding furigana in Word was super useful.

Also good to know: if you have a ん or ン at the end of a word (e.g. 山口さん or メロンパン) you have to type n twice to get it because the IME waits for another letter as it could be something like に. Often the IME recognizes the word anyway but sometimes you have to manually create the ん/ン.

Standard IME mapping allows "xn" for that character as well, so you can do that. In fact, IME allows you to change the mapping of all the characters to whatever you like (IME Advanced Settings/Romaji-Kana Conversion)

It might also be worth noting (at least in the Google IME) that: du = づ and di = ぢ Since the regular zu and ji are the standard ず and じ

du = づ and di = ぢ also works for Linux ibus. All of that makes it trivial to switch between e.g. Android Japanese input and Linux Japanese (via the IBUS method) input (I *think* Windows IME works the same too).

@@laurapaglia8229 I don't have Ubuntu installed, but for a generic Debian-based installation I can show how. I believe that'll most likely works on Ubuntu as well, if you get into any problems with the following please give another comment and I'll figure it out. apt-get install ibus apt-get install ibus-kkc As your own user, execute ibus-setup In 'General' you can, if you want, set/change the key combo used to switch to/from Japanese IME mode. I use 'control space', but maybe you'll want something else. In 'Input', use 'Add', select Japanese, then Kana Kanji You may also use 'Add' after that add your own language - I don't know if that make any difference though, but that's what I did. The important part is to add Japanese plus Kana and Kanji. in 'Emoji' I changed a key as well, I don't use it - I think - but I didn't have the default key on my keyboard so I changed it to 'control'. In 'Advanced' I have written in my notes "Leave out 'Use system keyboard layout'. I don't recall what that was for. For the above, the important part is really to add Japanese, kana kanji, and, optionally, select your own trigger key or key combo. I think the rest is default anyway. After this you can start an xterm or something and try it. If your xterm setup supports utf-8 it should work, if you have Japanese fonts installed. Or 'uxterm', for a default utf-8 xterm setup. Or try from an office application, or a text editor like 'pluma'. Use your trigger combo, start writing romaji and you should see hiragana (write 'ka', see ' か', and pressing space shows a table of choices (or repetitive space walks the table). Press 'enter ' when you want it to stick. When you're writing words you press 'enter' whenever you want that part of the word to stick. You'll get the hang of it soon. It basically works just like the descriptions for Windows IME. For system fonts.. I have some installed, but I don't know what's default for Ubuntu. Try it first, see if you get it to work in applications (or even the browser), and report back if problems.

For anyone who installed the Japanese IME and had the keyboard only give you the conversion options if you type in kana mode which means you have no clue where the letters are without trial and error, here is the solution. To the far right is the system clock, to the left of that is the English J standing for Japanese in the same way that your ENG stands for English. To the left of the input mode once in Japanese, you will see either A or あ. Right click on the A or あ and the bottom option will be “send feedback” with the option directly above it reading “show/hide IME toolbar” which is the option we are going to left click. Once the bar appears above the system tray, The far right option or icon will be a cog. To the left of the cog, you will see かな and hovering the mouse over it will display the tool tip “kana input on.” Left click on it to bring up a menu with two options and the top one will have a dot to the left of the words Kana input and the bottom option that we are looking for will say “Romaji input.” Once you select Romaji, you will notice that the tool tip changes to Kana input off. You should now be able to type with the keys doing what you expect them to do.

For Linux I recommend 'ibus'. There are a couple of other systems, but ibus, unlike the others, works with every window manager and not just desktop managers (those with everything integrated). ibus also works with all applications (again, unlike those other ones). And it works just as described in that video, basically. F7 for direct katakana, etc. For Japanese I installed 'ibus' and 'ibus-kkc' for Japanese. After that start it, and optionally configure (change) the key to switch to/from ibus (Japanese) input mode. Works super well. And, again, like described in the video for Windows (maybe without the automatic furigana support.. I haven't actually looked for that though). (EditAdd: I actually have a Japanese keyboard with all those extras.. because I bought my computer in Japan. But I use it just like described above anyhow.)

Also, you can type おなじ and then choose 々 to type it.

If you have a newer macbook and you wanna add the Japanese keyboard its simple . Go to keyboard in your settings and edit your “text input “ . Its there you wanna add the Japanese keyboard. After messing around with this I highly recommend you go with romaji first unless you’re really daring .

The shortcut to switch between typing in Japanese to English and back - all the time I'm going to save! Plus all your other tips, I might actually start enjoying typing in Japanese. Thank you for making this video!

Damn. Thanks a lot, George! I knew about the keyboard, but the l trick and the F keys are so useful.

Another useful tip is that if you highlight some Japanese text (even with kanji) and press F6, it will automatically switch to conversion mode, converting the kanji to kana.

If you hold shift while you are in Japanese IME it will type English so you don't have to change your IME style (but the English you type will be in capital letters). Also, I haven't changed my space setting to half-width, but I found that holding shift (in Japanese IME) while pressing spacebar will type a half-width space.

On a german keyboard the "Z" and "Y" key is swiched. And the katakana "ー" is on the "ß" key.

Wow those are great tips with the all of those different symbols! I tried it on my iPad and it still works. Also, I do have a Japanese Smart Keyboard and you’re right that I don’t use Kana mode that much, but I will say the layout is very handy since there is are dedicated @ and ][ buttons.

For me personally, I prefer the Google Japanese IME. In the past, I had problems with Microsoft Japanese IME and its plethora of shortcuts and its deep integration into Windows. Google Japanese IME is simpler, and imo easier to use. I've been using it for several years. Shortcuts are the same, I think, but I could be wrong since I haven't used the Microsoft IME in so long. lol

You can modify language switching shortcuts to your desire as well! 👍

Great video! Now a couple of follow up questions: What about typing full sentences? Is it better to convert to kanji after each word or after a couple of words or after the whole sentence? Also if you picked the wrong kanji and confirmed it is there a way to fix it without erasing the whole word and typing it again?

It's your opinion how you want to type it. But for me I just press space every word with a particle, so I'm sure what Kanji I had selected.

I have been using Google's IME for a while now because for some reason the Windows 10 IME shortcuts would randomly stop working for me and I would end up having to reboot, reinstall it, etc. I've read that the Google version also tends to be smarter about guessing what you want to type. In any case it has always worked very well for me.

カヵカヵカヵ my jaw dropped on the keyboard for the first time to see a small ヵ since I typed 一カ月 on my first computer 30 years ago.

On mine it's like an actual Japanese keyboard like the 3 is あ　instead of a being あ　and i don't know if i can change it so i don't have to memorize which keys on my English keyboard are which kana.

Nevermind there was a setting i needed to deactivate. You will need to right-click the Hiragana and then make sure Kana Input is set to off

I use google ime input instead, do all of these work with google ime?

I'm always hitting enter to select what kanji I want, there are occasional times when I will hit Enter twice causing me to send the text message only half way written, I thought "surely this happens often enough the Japanese must have a term for when this happens" but I asked a Japanese friend of mine and they couldn't understand what I was talking about at all, anyone know anything?

That happens often for my Japanese wife, but I don't think she has a term for it other than Aaarrgghhh! :-)

BTW, anyone knows if it support the input using Hiragara (like typing the key G give you き, typing O give you ら), instead of input using Romanji?

It should be a setting, just look through them. Google IME has it and I think I remember it in Windows IME too.

If you go into the IME Properties, you can can change the Romaji-Kana conversion mapping.

@@japanesefromzero Somehow didn't work. I have 65% keyboard and ~/Esc is on the same button so it probably didn't work thru Shift. I set up additional button as/with 한/영 on second layer and it works now))

@らてちゃん I would only need Furigana for Anki to add it to Kanji I haven't learned yet. That being said If i can't add Furigana I could probably get around it by putting kana in parenthesis next to the target Kanji but it would have been nice to add furigana.
