What is your research based on? Good try, but you missed the mark because the focus on Japan is an actual government directive/promotion. This national sentiment comes from the "Look East" policy instituted by Dr Mahathir -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_East_policy_(Malaysia). By the way Southeast Asian history is richer, and a lot earlier than the Malacca sultanate. But, again, good try.

I've visited Kyoto Tourist center at front of Kyoto tower in 2018 before, the japanese staff there even can speak basic Malay greetings like terima kasih, apa khabar, selamat tinggal etc, then when I go to prayer room, the description & guide in there also in Malaysia language

As Malaysian, Japan is one of must go destination checklist in my life time. Many Japanese cultures and attitudes resonates with local Malaysia cultures.

That is the reason i love Malay peoples. They not throw all the blame at colonizer for colonize their country, instead they blaming themself and accept the mistakes their people did in the past like betrayal, not standing together etc. The past will stay in the past, the future is what upon us forever. some say that Malaysians are very accepting of Japan after what the Japanese army has done in Malaysia (Malaysia, Borneo)..btw Malaya has been colonized for over 400 years by the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Japanese and until now we still will not forget the fall of the Malacca Sultanate against the Portuguese and some of the fall of the Malay Sultanate Empire caused by the Colonizers and any of their atrocities..but in this day and age, we choose to accept all of you former colonial countries in our country, as long as you no longer interfere with the sovereignty of our country. as the saying goes "The Trap Will Not Forget the Moth". Why did Malaysia make a Buy Last British campaign? This is because of the arrogance of the British in Malaysia's request to return the estate lands in Malaysia that are still owned by the colonial country despite Independence, and as a result in the year 1981, Malaysia has started an attack to take over the shares of the British plantation company Guthre that owns the land in Malaysia on the London Stock Exchange during the time of PM Margaret Tucher and finally all the farms returned to the Malaysian company which is now known as Sime Darby..(The Down Rid)

Agreed, especially on the political issues and religion. Religion and politics should never mingle. That's why we're still a developing country. Looking at Singapore which was part of Malaysia, if they can do it, why Malaysia with such blessed land and resources still struggle? And it's difficult for many to acknowledge it, since it means that they have to see their religion in bad light. But it's not just Malaysia, even for first world country, USA, see how backwards they've become, due to mingling politics with religion. They all care more about their religions than the ppl.

Kinda weird how most Asian nations still have a bad opinion about the Japanese but Malaysia was able to forgive much easily, I mean are you really gonna blame the Japanese today for what their ancestors did? Obviously it's time to move on and maintain good ties again. Though it would be nice if Malaysia followed Japanese values in terms of infrastructure, waste management and maintenance of cultural heritage sites. I didn't know I had to say this but don't extrapolate any information from what I've said here, it's literally a comment that represents a fraction of my thoughts, I can't possibly answer all your questions can I?

Yes, i hope we follow their waste management method. But sadly we malaysians complaint a lot if we have to segregate our sampah. We didnt separate the biodegradable & non biodegradable items, we hardly recycle, i still see ppl pay for plastic bags in shops instead of bringing their own bag, we buy single use items. And worse, we have a lot of foreign workers that dont care at all about the environment. I have even seen them throw their bags of sampah into the rivers.

But to be honest the Japanese were against the implementation of recycling laws as well, it's only after a certain amount of time that it became normalized

Look at how india spent 5 billion dollars to ask Japan build a dam for them, and look at how it collapsed so easily. Is it Japan's technology problem? or corruption in the government? you should know better. That is why China is not that stupid to leave it up workforce of someone that does not have a good track record. The nine-dash lines was published in 1948 by the Chinese government with no raising disputes. The disputes only happen when countries around saw promising prospect for oil and gas resources in the 1970s, and they began to occupy the resources, beginning the disputes. Other than that, it's a much more complicated issue that needs more understanding and bilateral negotiations, than just blantantly denoting the issue as China wanting to annex South China Sea as its own. Plus you wanna talk about bully, why didn't you mention USA.

'Look East Policy' wasn't thought out overnight.Its the fallout between Malaysia's PM Mahathir & UK PM Margaret Thatcher with regards to then 'Guthrie' the biggest & oldest Brits owned Plantation company which holds Huge tracks of land in Malaysia. Malaysia's Government 'Guthrie Dawn Raid' on London Stock Exchange caused rift n an embarrassment to then Margaret Thatcher, losing control of a former colonial historic company. retaliation ..by brits, among few - Sudden increase of Educational Fees of Malaysian students studying in UK, What better time now to aggressively promote Look East Policy ..

The main thing is the japanese demeanor is what we Malaysian and Indonesians can relate to. Our 'adab dan sopan' is similar to the polite and respectful japanese culture. The only difference is that the japanese educational system manage to integrate it successfully in their society whereas we still struggle to implement it nationwide. Not to mention the loitering culture which still needs fixing, hopefully the masses would learn to appreciate local culture instead of blindly following foreign one Remember what they did in ww2. Also, Malaysia loves anime. As for Japan, Malaysian warm climate and more laid-back work attitude has been attracting many Japanese ppl. And in Malaysia, there are Bon Odoris annually to celebrate relations, politically and culturally. I was surprised that not every country had sth similar. And, in my experience, the ones who rmbr the Japanese invasion history in Malaysia are upset yes but they are more angered about Western ppl's colonial influences, which still has its effects today

my grandparents survived japanese invasion, although had some of their friends killed and was targeted personally by a group of japanese soldier because of my granparent's bloodline and my granpa's military title, they still manage to forgive them, they said "Its useless being mad at one Race just because they did something horrible in the past"

We aren't anything like the US - Russia cold war bromance relationship. We moved on and accepted with wholeheartedly towards others who's also wanted to move on.it's that simple

It is also noted that japan agreed a 'samurai bond' to loan malaysia some money to combat debt in 2018-2019 to which hasn't seen much improvement because the pandemic hits the world not long after. But it is quite clear our country had such strong economic relations with japan that they're willing to help malaysia

I came from Penang, there's a lot of stories about Japanese told by the elders, including our school field is where rebels are being decapitated, and lots of similar stories. Now to think of it, non of the elders told the stories with negative emotions. However, since the occupation is short, we do not have much Japanese influences like Taiwan has. It's a topic that happens around me but I never think too hard about it.

Would be interesting if you could include tourism data between the two countries.

Other than that, Malaysia got many races and all live in harmony, its favourable for the Japanese people parallel to its own culture goodness

I love Japan. All because I grew up watching anime. It was influential to me growing up, shaping what I like. My mum was neutral about Japan but my dad who's a bit older, he lived through the atrocities that the Japanese done in Malaya when he was child. He didn't really liked Japan and didn't understand why I liked Japan so much. I guess the opinions on Japan differ in different generations

@@Eskayzeee I actually got into a cultural exchange program when I was 17. I stayed with my host family in Japan for a year and it was the best thing I ever decided to go for.

When it comes to Japan, Malaysian are very forgiving. My grandmother, who was a teen when Japan “visited” during the 40s, refused to her dying day to use ANY Japanese products.

My late grandfather, when he was a child, had his father killed by the Japanese emperialist. Though every time my grandfather ever mentions Japan, he'd always talks about them as a matter of fact, without any malice. Which surprises me despite what the Japanese did to his father. Though my grandfather was never the vengeful(pendam) type. And to this day, imagine his first grandson, me liking the Japanese culture. Haha

Its the later generations who didn't went thru the war that probably more forgiving given the fact that they only learn history of the occupation but not the torturing n hardships. Probably thats why that generation is called silent generation.

These generation at their final phase. The min age currently around 70's. Moving onwards, we don't have any grudge to hold. Only a story will be pass on as reminder of their hardship to achieve what we have today.

Yep, my dad were one of 4 student in whole Malaysia to study abroad in Japan in the 80s due of the look east policy.

I am very grateful that my dream country chose my country because Malaysia has received many great services from Japan since the second world war, Japan has helped Malaysia develop important national industries such as vehicles and others before the appearance of Chinese goods, it is Japan that has contributed a lot and also Europe, so japan should strengthen its importance in malaysia, malaysia has given the green light to increase the ability of japanese culture in malaysia, japanese culture is very good how can malaysia reject it after all now there are many malaysian and japanese together and married, at the same time developing japanese malay ancestry

and I can say that Japan is the best trading partner that Malaysia has ever had, look at the quality of their goods, they are durable, the prices are affordable and it fits the character of a developing country even though it is not very rich, this Japan has an Asian soul, it contributes almost 60-70% world goods, we are lucky to have Japan in Asia, many Malaysians are amazed by the spirit of Japan, they use a lot of Japanese goods, so it gives encouragement that this relationship is great

As a malaysian, we’ve simply forgiven Japan for what they’ve done to us centuries ago by bringing us anime.

Well, the Japanese occupation mainly targeted chinese. Malays were mainly let off. Hence there is not as much blood n hate with majority of the population. This is just a fact. Just like Thailand is 2nd on the list, bcuz they surrendered in Japanese invasion. This is also a fact.

every Malaysian student during mahathir time as the Prime minister for 22 years from 1981-2003 grow up with a lot of affection or admiration for japan in their tech in their pop culture their language..his policy not just influence the gov administration and bureaucratic policy but also on other aspect of normal malaysian daily life..i remember we use to have a lot of tv drama from japan in our malaysian tv both in gov own tv and private tv station..there even a japanese language segment on radio...thats how most malaysian kid in the 80 and 90 grow up to love japan through this soft power or cultural exposure..we love japan so much and anything japanese from car engine to manga/anime to sushi to JAV etc.

Sad...sad to see rich foreigners living in Jalan Ampang/Mont Kiara/ Bangsar/ Bukit Tunku using Malaysian resources, while local malaysian girls working in Japanese electronic factories underpaid compared to pinoys maids...and be called "bagiro" by Japanese bosses.And they even have to celebrate boss's dead relatives on Bon Odori.By the time they reached 40, these local factory girls lost their eysights, suffer back pains, and many had cancer due to radioactive in the factories...Next, we'll have future English Queen who's anchestors took lands from locals called them Guthrie.. right... Selamat Merdeka.

Would like to chip in a bit here. When Japanese investors come to Malaysia, they will bring along their own contractors, supply chain, financier and business partners (keiretsu model). Therefore, these Japanese investments doesn't really benefit local communities much since most of the money flows within the keiretsu structure. The Chinese investors are also replicating the same model in Malaysia. However, it does seem like there is more prejudice against Chinese investors as compared to Japanese investors although they are using the same model. Personally, I think these investors should be regulated more to benefit local communities.

We can forgive but we cant forget our history

malaysians who grew up in the 80s with anime and video games have a favorably view of japan. this is japan's soft power at best. current generation are exposed to k-wave from korea.

If you look at the history we tried to have good relationship with US by buying planes from them. But only a few planes arrive here. The rest are in a dessert somewhere in US. In the end we buy from Russia. Its like recent Turkiye problem.

These days Japanese investments in Malaysia are very little. They much prefer Vietnam & Thailand. Actually its the US that have been investing heavily in Malaysia. The ones im excited the most with is Dell $7 billion project in Penang and Microsoft data center in Cyberjaya which will create 19,000 jobs, mostly high paying. There is even talk about Amazon and Google joining Microsoft in Cyberjaya to work on a hyperscale data center. I hope this will happen.

some weirdos in the comments literally said Malaysia is a weeb country and a big h consumer when the entire video displayed proven statistics and calculations about Malaysia-Japan trading. this is proof that it's so hard to find a person with an actual brain online... 🗿

What's kind of funny is that the foreign companies or MNCs from Japan, Europe, China and America pay way more (in some cases double) than what our own domestic Malaysian Corporations pay. The only domestic company that gives a competitive wage is Petronas, other than that, the Chinese-Malaysian owned corporations low ball the heck out of salaries and the government isn't even enforcing them to give an amount that people can actually live with. It's sad honestly.

Yeah, we may "look east" but we actually don't learn and implement the essence of it . Japan has good public transportations,very developed in technology, punctual and active to improve any inconveniences. But in reality, Malaysia didn't learned or progress from that relation. Now, we realised that we are so wasted by becoming a mobile-centric country.

Our nazi home minister has tightened the screw and made it more difficult for new mm2h applicants. But those interested can apply from sarawak state which has a autonomy in immigration matters and maintain previous conditions. Even my son can converse in japanese he learned from anime cartoons. He spoke japanese if clients are japanese when working part time after spm. So now he speaks four languages.

former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad really is the founding father of Malaysia - Japan relationships.. his Look East Policy back in those days are the key platform on what Malaysia has become today.. Proton does uses Mitsubishi tech back then and become Malaysia's national car brand but nowadays Perodua takes on the title as Perodua still uses Japan's Toyota / Daihatsu tech.. Proton on the other hand changes to China Geely tech and that makes them now below Perodua as Malaysian favorite car brand.. In the upcoming near future i can tell that Japan will always be our most ideal partner.. it's true that Japan once invade our country, making our ancestors lives miserable back in WW2 but we Malaysians have this thing called forgiveness as taught by Islam teachings and beliefs.. the way i see it, Japan is making up for their mistakes in the past by helping Malaysia develop alongside them towards a better future together like good friends or brothers do..
