HOW IT WORKS: Sikorsky H-19 Helicopter

The H-19 "Chickasaw", which was a multi-purpose role used by the United States, is credited with many innovations which were forward placement of the engine below the crew compartment and in front of the cabin, with offset flapping hinges located 9 in (229 mm) from center rotor, and use of hydraulic servos for the main rotor controls. This allowed for more versatile capabilities than previous designs.

Made my first Static Line Jump from a H-19 - was somewhere near San Antonio, Tx, circa 1967 or 68. The copter was out of Ft. Sam Houston, as I recall. I was USAF stationed at Lackland AFB (MTI duty). Most of the other jumpers were Army Airborne (who were learning to Free Fall.) Made quite a few jumps from the H-19. And, yes, it was noisy as hell, and did vibrate a lot. Ahhhh, great memories. USAF Avionics, Ret. B-6370 PCA & USPA

Owned one late 1990s at fishing lodge. Engine R1340 flight plan 45 gallons avgas an hour. Overhaul engine at 600 hrs., clutch held together w leather straps riveted to pressure plate, blades made from cellulose coated with shellack (insect based coating). Tail rotor driveshaft used parts from old Dodge Power Wagon. State of the art 1950 technology. A former South Vietnamese Army Colonel with a face full of scars trained us and told jaw-dropping war stories of flying them into combat. Called it my 5000 lb dog; fun to show your friends but ate you out of house and home. Had fun with it then 9/11/01 destroyed insurance market after I’d just sunk a fortune into it. Lost my ass. Screamed obscenity-filled farewells as next buyer flew it off into the horizon. 😂. Great to see this old video. Thank you.

Mid September 1956. Isn’t it a hoot seeing these old training films? I’d love to see some of the old training films we were shown in the Navy; some of that stuff was the same vintage, maybe a little later. I remember a film about how important it was to avoid having gear a drift. It was in color and the captain was very concerned and pondering his options as to ship filled with water because somebody left gear a drift and it plugged up the hose they were using to drain the compartment!

When you decide to take up flying lessons, you’ll learn to do a preflight walk around on your Cessna 150/152 or 172 or R22 if you’re going for rotary wing rating. Initially you’ll use a printed checklist that will help you to check all of the things that need looking at. After you’ve done it a few times, you’ll be able to accomplish the preflight without the checklist but then double check with the checklist to make sure you didn’t miss anything. After you have your pilot license, you’ll likely have to learn the preflight for a larger aircraft than you were first trained in. That’s what’s happening in this training film. Don’t worry. You’ll remember all this shit. You wanted to be a pilot, right?

I preflighted c-152 and c-172's long ago, but I recall we had a little plastic cup with a pin to check for water in the fuel, the pilot there is using his hand, thats zany. He should at least had a Dixie cup to check it. Fuel is slightly toxic, it wonder if it caught up with him in his latter years. Never can tell. Cool radial engined chopper...

ALL Aviation Fuels(any hydrocarbon fuel for that matter) are carcinogenics and will eventually cause cancer with prolonged contact without using PPE. I used to steal protective vinyl gloves from my Oil Company Employers to do my fuel checks for PPL/IMC/MULTI & Instrument Ratings. Even my Examiner thought I was a "cissy" !

You'd think there would be a better way to check the gas for water and foreign matter than by draining some on your hands! How about a sight glass as on many small planes? And the rotor service platform? I wonder how many crewmen fell off there while inspecting the mechanism?!
