You can get LED fixtures that will light the mill up nicely. Much better than tubes. And no more tube replacements either!

Nathan, I use CMT Orange Tool in my wood shop to clean the pitch off my table saw blades and it’s a great degreaser too

when using materials and there not all perfect use the best stuff first, that was your always using the best stuff.

That was educational!

Nice 2x4"s for Dad.

A sawyer I knew decades ago that had a small mill here in Oregon would save up the wane edge slabs and cut them separate from the square edge.. Bundling up the wane edge allowed him to make a waned 2x2, then 2 good 2x4, and remain a waned 2x2. This gave 2 good 2x4 and scrap. Cutting the wane edges with the square slabs only gives 1 good 2x4 from the middle, and 2 heavy waned 2x4 nobody wants. This is a real common size log. Getting 2 more good square 2x4 per log would add up over a period.

Nathan, you should change your fluorescent light fixtures to LEDs. You will get much, much, much longer life from them, with no dimming or color change and much less energy use. It takes a little wiring change, in each fixture, but after the first one, you'll be a pro. 😁✌🖖

Look at converting your flouro lights to LED tubes perhaps. Cheaper to run and better options for light temperature. Run them up in the natural daylight temperature range. For those who don't know, this is not heat output but apparent light colour. Lower temp tends to be more yellow and softer. Higher gets whiter and cleaner.

If you need to replace lighting go for LED strip lights. They are brighter and save you lots of $..

Nice 2 by's Harbor Freight has good price on LED lights they are bright and some models can be connected together, I have a 8 ft flo tube from Home Depot that I converted to LED and it is bright. Changing the 4 foot to LED was cheaper on power too! That was the first time I heard the debarking saw cut on your machine that's some great audio with the video... JLa

Nathan, just for gee wiz, the band wheels for my Oscar 30 state not to use petroleum products! Which explains why they were dried out cracking and breaking on the machine when I bought it! The own later told me that he was using oil of some kind cut with diesel! If I could I would use straight diesel, just for how well it works!

Good Video and Great Content before you cut the 2X4's I thought the first 2 slab cuts would have made a really awesome counter top or Island top or even a desktop.

First Im gonna tell ya,then Im going to do it, then Im gonna tell ya what I did lol.

I was kind of surprised a couple years ago when I found out that one can not legally use saw mill lumber for any structural component in a residence unless it is inspected, graded, and stamped.

@@OutoftheWoods0623 Some states adopt codes and it covers the state regardless of inspections. Some states allow each county to adopt codes. Some states allow cities to adopt codes. But yes, if there is no adopted code in the State, county, municipality, or city, then build whatever you want. There are inspectors that can come to mills and grade and stamp them for a fee.

I am sure you have, but can you go over (show) the sawmill controls, in general, when you have the time. thanks

so at what point do you GO BIG YOUNG MAN or remain a Small circumference operator? You do a lot of work but you seem to do the Logs that Big Operators don't want to spend time on. It would be interesting to hear about Big Diameter Log Cutting and your Operation so far.

have you tried no odor mineral spirits instead of diesel? I use it a lot, especially for lighter fluid. Not as good as kerosene at degreasing but it works and don't stink.

so if you dried those 2x4s from the recently-felled white pine in the kiln, what would be their final dimensions? I'm guessing something still slightly bigger than the 1.5x3.5 you find at a lumber yard?

Yes

You cut the top of the log to make square and flip it over. That makes sense, but why make two, or three cuts off the top? Just more wear on the blade and fuel. Make one cut and be done with it.

How do you make a living in lumber? If you sell those 2x4 to someone what would you charge? 4 bucks? So if you had 20 out of that order would be 80 dollars. Does that pay for the cost of things and still put you ahead some?

If you had a chipper would you be able to make enough chips(from slabs) that you could sell?

Hello, when do you worry about the blade jamming when you do multiple cuts on a squared piece of timber without removing the boards after the cut? Or do you?. Does it depend on the weight of the log?

you don't worry, this mill doesn't care actually, very powerful,

When you want to get true 2" widths on your boards do you allow for 1/8" extra for each cut you expect to make when you make your Cant? For instance, if you are going to make 4 cuts to get 5 boards from a Cant, do you make sure your Cant is 10 1/2" high? I have a manual mill so all the programming has to be done in my head. Not sure if I've seen a video where that was discussed. From an obvious newbee hobby Sawyer.

Why not use Isopropyl Alcohol instead of Diesel? That would cut sap well and won't have the long term odor on clothing.

De-barker does not need to be sharpened, it's blunt for a reason.

Now explain the black and silver things that dangle off the back of the cutting head. I can't figure those out.

Simple maths. As stated at start that the log was 8' long i.e. 96", 1 BF = 144 Cubic Inches, 112 BF = 16128 Cubic Inches, an 8 foot 2 x 4 = 768 Cubic Inches, 16128 divided by 768 = 21.

How do you get the smell of diesel off of you/your clothes? Regular soap doesn't seem to do much of anything, and I can't stand the smell.

Is this your full time job or is this a second job?
