    Yeah, I always wondered what are the companies that design those custom manufacturing machines. Also, how were those intricate patterns created on the molds before the advent of CNC? Were they cast in plaster molds?

    I agree. Although it's always a bit disappointing to realize they won't look like in the old cartoons. No humanlike hands that grab each piece and bend it and such :-(

    I swear now that I’m 22 almost have my AAS in manufacturing and working towards my BSME in Mechanical Engineering I swear this show is what got me into this whole machinist scene, crazy how I was a kid watching this to now making modern ceramic medical components. America needs all the independent manufacturing it can get.

    These machines are amazing. So complex. And to think someone or some people had to figure the way the whole process would work out, and then BUILD the machines that would do it, including casts for all the parts of the machine, of which there are thousands of moving parts!

    I'll tell you what amazes me about high volume mass production, is how factories find markets to sell their products by the millions. It just doesn't seem possible there could be enough people out there to buy them all

    People lose their tableware all the time. Many throw them out because they get bored of them. And then you also have hundreds of thousands of babies being born EACH DAY. There's always demand for products, especially in this consumerist culture that modernity promotes. And if there isn't, the markets will tell them based on the sales they get.

    I am a construction engineer specializing in mechanical engineering. Every time I install these instruments, I need to check their positions very carefully, because the slightest difference is a thousand miles away.

    Less about weight, moreso about rigidity. The tang of the knife is held solid by that cement, and it keeps the thinner nickel handle from being able to dent or bend.

    I was raised to use the term "cutlery" as we had fancier sets for special occasions that was dubbed the "silverware".

    They don't make the utensils like they used to. A table/butter knife should be one solid piece without a hollow in the handle, strong to stir peanut butter. Spoons should have the edge ground smooth.

    Yep cheaper sets are filled with cement or sand. Best type of flatware is solid handle with one-piece utensils (no two piece units attached together as one)

    You clearly don't know what "cement" means in this context. They're not talking about Portland cement, such as is used to make concrete.

    @@ahoorakia true but not always the case tbh. often times you see stuff that seems to be good quality, or you assume its made in certain way and its not. eg I would think even with cement handle, the blade's tang should extend all the way back.

    Okay so they fill it with cement to hold the tang in place, but cant that be acheived by welding it to the body?. Im assuming the cement is also to support the weight put on the knife.
