I'm not a chef nor a foodie but I think people underestimate the completeness of all "components" of a banh mi in Vietnam. The baguette is crunchy but not hard, light inside, all of the herbs are fresh, the pickled daikon and carrots are perfect balance of sweet and sourness, and the marinated and seasoned meat and pate and the meat drippings.

Best we had while over there was down on the island of Phu Quoc, it was made with the usual suspects but instead of pork floss there was moist roast pork and they included the pork crackle with the salads as a garnish... Omg still drool thinking about them ❤️❤️❤️

Nice! I regret not trying a banh mi during my short visit to the north of Vietnam (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa,Bac Ha, Lao Cai). I’ve always loved a good banh mi, and am so thankful that the Vietnamese refugees that I worked with in the early 80’s Silicon Valley electronics industry introduced me to the culture, language, cuisine (and the feminine beauty) of Vietnam, and took me to San Jose’s evolving Little Saigon for the first of countless visits. My favorite version of the icon sandwich would be the banh mi thit nuong, featuring the smoky, sweet, salty and savory charcoal grilled pork marinated in aromatic lemongrass, nuoc mam fish sauce and a host of other ingredients, with extra pate and the optional fried egg. My love of the banh mi truly developed thanks to the Vietnamese mom & pop deli/sandwich/mini marts, one very close to SJSU’s old campus library, where a banh mi could be had for USD $1.50, a banh bao dac biet combo steamed bun with minced pork, a piece of Chinese sausage and half a hard boiled egg for $1, and a pate chaud puff pastry filled with minced pork for $0.50, plus $0.50 for a can of cold coffee with milk & sugar. There was also a Vietnamese restaurant right across from the college library with an excellent ‘fish and shrimp stewed in the pot’, with a small catfish steak and 5 or 6 shrimp tails simmered in a caramelized sugar, nuoc mam fish sauce & fresh ground black pepper sauce that was sweet, salty, savory and black pepper hot, which went perfectly over jasmine rice, with hot jasmine tea as a beverage and a ca phe sua da iced strong Trung Nguyen Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. Another Vietnamese restaurant up Fourth Street had an excellent Vietnamese style dry coconut chicken curry that was a favorite on mine. Now in SoCal, I can enjoy the benefits of the largest Little Saigon in the US located in Orange County, which host an authentic summer Vietnamese night market with lots of outdoor street food vendors, plus a two week Tet Cho Hoa Flower and Night Market annually around the Lunar New Year.

Thank you for your video!! One thing, the sauce for Bánh mì is not just normal soy sauce. In my city (hue city), the sauce is one of the most important parts to set your bánh mì apart from other bánh mì stalls so they really have all sorts of secret recipes to make the sauce delicious. Also, bánh mì varies greatly depends on where you eat it, maybe you can try bánh mì from other regions next time you're in Viet Nam!

started watching this channel from" Bae, what u want for dinner ", this mtfk has gained interest from me. Now seeing him in VN and paying a lot of interest in our cuisine, this channel has also gained a huge respect from me for bringing the cuisine to the world. Please try some more dishes of VN before getting back home with a bag of regrets. Much love from Vietnam

The amount of great ingredients - Impressive. The low price for the amount of food you get - Even more impressive. The fact that you could say the word "dong" with a straight face - Unrivaled.

100% top 5 global sandwich varieties! But to be fair, in reality the consumer experience is somewhat different if you don't have a camera / crew with you 😢 After touring Vietnam and Cambodia for some time myself, the reality is in fact a much less filled, yet equally delicious Banh Mi. Please don't think that if you're traveling to Vietnam for Banh Mi you'll experience a stuffed 'Subway' baguette. You won't... But what you will experience is one of the freshest, crispiest, fluffiest sub filled with freshly cooked meat and veggies served with love 🤤

When I was in Vietnam 4 years ago the average street side banh mi was 50c, some were as cheap as 30c. The most expensive I got was maybe $4 for a gourmet version. It’s interesting to see how the pandemic has affected the prices of these sandwiches. Still well worth it for $3-$5!

Average banh mi is still 15-20k dong though. These place, they're not cheap even 5 years ago. The price did go up but not that much.

You are being over-charged probally, the average Banh Mi in Ha Noi probally won't cost anything more than 1.5$ and in my region you can get 4 for 1$.

  • @khongnoi1012

Its currently usually 80c-$1 at cheaper places. Around $1.5-$2.5 for gourmet ones. I haven't seen anything $3 and above, unless it's banh mi chao (banh mi with hot ingredients served on a hot pan), though that one's cheating a little because you can eat one serving with 2+ pieces of bread.
