How is St. Paul's Cathedral dome constructed?

View this model in VR:

Created at the University of Cambridge with input from James Campbell
St. Paul’s Cathedral features an innovative triple dome structure. This system allows the cathedral to support such a heavy lantern, all the while maintaining the great height needed to be a visible London landmark.

Fascinating video. I have actually climbed right up to the lantern, where the views are amazing. The wooden staircase is very narrow and a bit frightening! I'm not sure if visitors are still allowed to go up there.

I climbed up earlier this year but the highest I could get was the golden gallery, the lantern access was shut off to the public unfortunately but the view from the golden gallery was still fantastic and well worth the climb. Like you said , the climb was incredibly tight, I'm 6'4 and 250lbs and felt more than a little claustrophobic at certain parts of the it.

Hey I thought I was dreaming. When I was 14/15, in 1971 me and my cousin climbed to the very top. There was a small door about 2 ft wide and very steep stair case going up so up we went. I'm sure we were right under the cross. It was open to the elements and could see all around. I placed a penny pre decimalization there behind one of the arches that support the cross. I swear this is true.

Interesting that the inner dome is no where near the outer dome.

neat video: 2) things it would have been interesting to see a comparative (at some point in the video) of the Santa Maria del Fiore dome in Florence; 2) an explanation of how the cross at the top of the lantern was installed. Thx!

Myles, thank so much for sharing this beautiful animation. I've been reading about Christopher Wren and the building of St Paul's, and this has really brought this masterwork to life!

What you are doing, is not just some animation of some construction. This is downright monument preservation of culture, it's architecture, art and knowledge. It's being ahead of the curve of fire and destruction. A very important task.
