Treated lumber can be a great resource for the job at hand, but there are misconceptions about it that can prevent people from enjoying its benefits. In this series, Dennis McWhirter of Exterior Wood addresses these misconceptions head-on as he answers some of the most common questions based on his nearly three decades of experience in the industry. Our hope with this series is that you’ll make your next lumber-purchasing decision an even more informed one. In part one of this series, Dennis answers this question: How is pressure-treated wood made?

Great video. Some people think that they do pressure treating themselves. This is a good explanation why it doesn't work.

Actually you pretty much can and it's not that difficult to build a retort/autoclave from square tube stock, the problem is the economics of it. You'll need to buy the chems in bulk, you'll only be able to treat a limited amount of wood at a time, and like, treated wood is not THAT much more expensive, so why bother?

No, but they do have to dry it themselves!!!
I've wondered how pressure treating lumber works.
Wow sounds so easy
is this the same process for both ground-contact rated wood and above-ground wood?
Is it safe to assume that pressure treated wood is more expensive in the winter months than in summer months because of how long it takes to cure?

I don't think so. Lumber prices fall in the winter do to demand falling.

No it's not. Price stays the same throughout the year

Price has little to do with cost. It’s about demand.
I wonder what would happen if a person was pressure treated”?....sounds like the beginnings of a super hero movie.

That person wood pop....they aren't putting pressure in the chamber they are removing the air pressure bub160 PSI... With normal outside air pressure at sea level being about 14 PSI....a humans own pressure from just his heart pumping and blood pressure would cause his veins, arteries, probably his eyes to expand until they burst , and the vacuum of 160 psi would pop your lungs along with many other things....mso it's not just not having external air pressure on your body and organs...you are creating a vacuum..you would survive longer in space with No suit than and zero air pressure that you would in a vacuum of 160 psi.

Can U pressure treated bamboo?
can anyone answer my question, so when does the kiln drying process comes in I mean is this process done after kiln drying or before?
@the-lobber-1545

the kiln is used to unfreeze (used in the winter) the wood before the actual process of Pressure treating it
Love when people are really excited, proud, and interested in their work. May be a bad comparison but have you been to a fast food restaraunt recently?
It would be nice if at some point after the pressure treatment they would dry it completely for us so we can use it right away and not try to find somewhere to store it ourselves,

unlikely to happen its just so much more economically viable to just pressure treat the lumber and ship it out
the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more
Referring to it as “the chemical” sounds very sketchy

So a new process of removing the excess chemicals in a quicker fashion needs to be created. Come on man :)

No. This method uses time and gravity, which are free. So long as you keep the line moving you always have wood to throw on the truck

Since everyone seems to want to know what’s being put in the wood it’s chromated-copper arsenate. Your welcome

So confident, yet so incorrect. They're likely using Alkaline Copper Quaternary, but there are applications where cca is used. What kind of half-ass research did you do? It's likely that is factory only uses Alkaline Copper Quaternary

Not sure thats a good process those bales of wood were tightly packed hw is the chemical to penetrate when there is no gap all arounf them ?

Wrong. They use Alkaline Copper Quaternary mostly nowadays, not arsenic
So the correct name would be "chemical treated", where the "pressure" in the process?
