How is Dumbledore so POWERFUL? | MagicalTheory

Ойын-сауық

The Wizarding World is full of powerful characters like Bellatrix Lestrange, Severus Snape, and Barty Crouch Jr. Potent as these devious characters are however, it feels like none of them ever measure up to Albus Dumbledore.
And then there's (obviously) Voldemort, but when the two duel Dumbledore seems almost... bored? What gives? How is Dumbledore THAT much more powerful than everyone else?
Let's chat!

Yep, that checks out. Leave it to Dumbledore, the man obsessed with candy and children's games, to harness the kind of magic only children do, which adults then leave behind. And to master it so thoroughly that he leaves all of them in the dust.

@@MagicalTheoryYT Is that the one that says the chocolate frog cards of Dumbledore work the same way as Hermione's DA Coins? I'd love to see a full video on the evidence for that :D Man, that idea really makes the rounds in that series...Hermione basing hers off the Dark Mark. Just about everyone uses it. And that's another thing I adopted for use in my planned book, may it one day see the light.

Children have tons of growing up to do, so they are extremely flawed people, but there's also some inherent innocence and purity that comes with childhood. I"m sure part of dumbeldore seeing importance in the childlike has to do with that, but I choose to think that a large part of it is sort of like the saying about giving a man a fish vs. teaching a man to fish. throughout all the obstacles that come up in the series Dumbledore would probably be better at handling them, but it could almost create a situation where having Dumbledore around makes it TOO easy for everyone else. You don't want to too comfortable with a situation where one man is the answer to everything. Better to let the kids do it so that he's not the only competent guy around. Am I suggesting that Dumbldore could've found the chamber of secrets in a few hours, but didn't so harry could have a challenge. No, but going to the cave in the 6h book would be the sort of thing I'm talking about. It's probably not the case that Harry would've been any more help to him than say Snape would've been, but it wasn't just about getting help in the moment. It was about involving Harry to help him grow.

For Me Dumbeldore's immense edge comes from his understanding of the power of Love, for he forever knew Voldermort could never possess or comprehend and thus is why he never faced Voldermort with fear, for like a blind mouse, one who can not see the light can not comprehend the full gamot of things

If there's a problem, then it seems to make sense that Dumbledore would be trusted to take care of it, given that he's so powerful, wise, and has the right intentions. The trouble is that he's so powerful and wise that there's no logical limit to what dumbeldore should be entrusted with, and the logical conclusion of entrusting Dumbledore is that he's treated essentially as some god like king of the world. Aside from it just being self evident how creepy and wrong that feels, Dumbledore has also seen where it goes when he and his best friend got carried away with their ideas about how much they should take charge It sort of reminds me of the whole idea that Batman's one rule is that he doesn't kill. It might sometimes seem impractical when killing looks like a morally justified and a logical solution to a problem, but Batman still has the rule because it's his belief that it won't be a net benefit. Because Crossing the murder line encourages bad habits to put it mildly. Likewise Dumbledore could be more useful in the story than he is, but he makes an effort to stop himself from becoming too much of a crutch. I point this out in response to the idea (made more explicit by a fellow viewer in the comments) that Dumbledore sees value in the childlike. I'd respectfully argue that Dumbledore sees the value in children not because he thinks they're ultimately more qualified to save the day. He grooms Harry in particular to be the ultimate hero, not because he thinks Harry is more qualified to save the day, but because Dumbldore has to keep his own power in check, so the best he can do is prepare someone relatively less impressive to do the job for him. He has Snape kill him, and then leaves it to Harry from there, in part because he was going to die soon anyway, but he was going on about how Harry was the key before that.

Oh yeah, I think about how lucky the wizarding world is that Dumbledore was not disruptive, all the time! Harry would never understand 17-years old Albus, because being so powerful is intoxicating and it is very hard to remain a good person when you definitely know that you can overpower pretty much anyone.

@@Notherj as for the idea that dumbledore was like a parent? got to respectuflly disagree on that one. I mean, was he an older person who offered protection and wisdom sometimes? for sure, but how much did him and Harry enjoy each other's company? They obviously respected each other greatly, and dumbeldores guidance was very enriching, but how much were they pals. I personally can't think of an instance where one made the other laugh I'm aware that there's the cliche that "a father is there to be a parent. Not a friend" and that's true in the sense that a child and parent aren't peers, and it's not just about them liking each other, but them liking each other is supposed to be part of the relationship is it not?

I think you're spot on with pretty much all of this, honestly. My one area of disagreement is I don't think that Dumbledore is using some mastery of inadvertent bursts of magic to accomplish his effects so much as I don't think magic necessarily requires a verbal incantation. I think that an incantation is essentially shorthand: in learning a spell you personally are tying that expression of magic to the words. The words aren't magic, the caster is. Using a wand and the proper flick of the wrist are aids to amplify and direct the magic, granted a wand is inherently magical, but I'm all-but-certain that a "swish and flick" isn't. We've seen in HBP that nothing necessarily bars even a teenager from crafting their own spell if they have the talent to do so, and I'd imagine that the "most talented wizard of his age" and quite possibly of all-time is probably pretty darn proficient at that particular skill. Possibly to the point where he can do it in moments... and if a spell doesn't require an incantation... Remember that Dumbledore beat one of his only peers in a duel decisively when his opponent was wielding the most powerful wand in existence. Dumbledore needs to have an "x factor" and I think that's it. I think Dumbledore just has more magic juice than the overwhelming majority of wizards and is essentially without peer at making new spells. When you combine that with the time that he's had to hone his skills and his mastery of wandless and nonverbal magic, he becomes a monster that even the few wizards with the same levels of power that he has effectively cannot safely engage in a duel under any circumstances.

Jumping ahead of the video here, Dumbledore did it the same way Hermione did it...scholarship or what's also known as "book learnin'" Of course retaining what one reads takes some ability. Deprived of a formal education I wouldn't be too impressed with the Headmaster. Probably turn out to be like Stan Shunpike. And then there is the idea wandless magic, the kind magical children are capable of. You hit that one right out of the park. I wasn't expecting that! Good point.

This theory makes perfect sense that he just performs magic by pure instinct. It’s like the difference between a Mozart and your average piano player. Your average musician may need to “learn” a collection of songs, rehearse them and perform. But Mozart just created whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. Dumbledore just did wandless mqgic, via his wand without being limited by the conventions of wizaeding society. I think the elder wand was just the icing on the cake.

So, if I understand it correctly, one can attribute Dumbledore's power to his creativity and openness to new information. I rather like this theory, as it makes his power a bit more...approachable for other magic-users. It's not like he's just got a massively large reservoir of magic energy (think Dragonball Z "It's over 9000!") but rather he looks at magic in a different way than other wizards and witches do, a way that others can try to emulate. I feel like Luna Lovegood would be very good at this approach, given the contrast between her and Hermione for instance.
