How Insulting Jean Smart Led Hannah Einbinder to Book ‘Hacks’

Ойын-сауық

So much of what makes “Hacks” work is the chemistry between its two central characters, played by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. The HBO Max comedy hinges on the connection between these two seemingly disparate women So how did this pair find that connection? By lobbing insults at each other in the dark.
The very first interaction between comedians Deborah Vance (Smart) and Ava (Einbinder) in the pilot swiftly unravels into a sparring match. This moment was so pivotal to establishing the duo’s relationship that it became the audition scene for actors vying for the part of Ava. Watch as the the two discuss nailing the chemistry they captured in that first audition.

I never really paid attention to Jean Smart until she played Lana Gardner on Fraiser. I wish I could have her scream "Kirby" as my ring tone. In any event, I knew she was talented but I didn't realize how talented she is until Hacks. Goodness. Wow - she's one of my favorite actresses now. She's so great that I honestly thought she'd done a lot of stand-up earlier in her career. I don't know if Hacks was originally written for her, but she sure makes it seem like it was.

I really enjoyed this first season and can't wait for the continuation! I do hope we can get a bit more actual standup comedy so we can really feel how Deborah's new show they're writing is different, rather than just giving one line and then alluding that is was better. 'Crashing' pulled off getting quite a bit of actual standup in the show, and I hope Hacks can do the same! :D
