How innocent postal workers were prosecuted for embezzlement in Britain | Focus on Europe

Hundreds of postal workers were wrongly prosecuted for allegedly embezzling money. The real culprit was malfunctioning software. It triggered one of the country's biggest miscarriages of justice.

@@mrtee3477anything under 20 million is a disgrace. They knew that it was faulty. They send trainers that saw they did everything right and still the programm showed it was wrong. They got beaten up by people in their communities. All of them had issues and the Post office knew about it bit claimed they are the only ones having issues. The Post prosecuted them knowing it was the programms issue. The judges didn't do their job correctly not once did they question the system. They had so many cases and didn't realized the pattern. They waited so long to be compensated. That's an outrage on itself. The society did them wrong. And so society has to pay up.

What I don't understand is how they didn't check for something else when this was happening in different Post Offices. OK, we can have a rogue employee here and there. But when you have more than 900 people on the same situation, something else is happening...

Because I would imagine nobody wants to take action or responsibility. It would mean admitting a problem. I hope everyone is compensated, not that that would make up for the years of mental health issues for all of them and families included. The company for the software needs to be shut down and held accountable and the postal service for not taking action.

the management of the post office and Fujitsu the company that created and operated the software knew it was faulty. The people working in the helpline call centres knew it was faulty and were ordered to lie to post masters and tell them it wasn't. Everyone involved knew the post masters were not guilty. The prosecutions were all about covering up the fact that the computer system the post office had spent 90 million pounds on was funder mentally broken from the start. This wasn't a mistake, it was a deliberate cover-up to try to protect the organisation from the consequences of its own failures at the expense of ordinary people who'd done nothing wrong

The problem in the Britain is that the Post Office is partly privatized with the Royal Mail being the privatized section which is why the British government can sue these two individuals for compensation in court. Completely different than USPS which is a government entity.

in the UK those with money and power are never guilty of anything. Those who work hard for little money are guilty of everything, especially the crimes committed by the rich. It's always been that way to some extent. We never really got rid of our aristocrats here in the UK, just put them in suits and made them CEOs and MPs, and they kept their expectation of impunity and entitlement. But after 14 years of corrupt tory government its gotten soo much worse. The fish rots from the head down

It's so true..there is little justice in the UK - look at the 3 billion lost because of the PPE scandal - when powerful figures swung the contracts their way! I doubt there will be court cases involving these figures. No wonder people are voting with their feet - over 500,000 Brits emigrate each year...high taxes and government corruption are important factors...

Folks need to vote for representation that will enact a legislative change that punishes this abuse of accountability and power to ruin good peoples lives. It's too rare that these bureaucracies who hold such power are punished. There needs to be a since of urgency and responsibility not indifference and immunity. Names need to be named and punishments need to lead to restitution.
