Which is a huge shame because Walt Disney himself once said the following: “You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.” C.S. Lewis, the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia, said this, “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” Disney flat out rejected those two quotes, which is another reason why they're failing.

Considering their previous CEO, Bob Chapek, actually said in an interview that adults don't want to watch animation, yes, that is exactly what they've been doing. They didn't like that Owl House's success was largely due to teens and adults, and not young children. They pushed back heavily on Matt Braly's desire to make Amphibia a darker series (and Anne was supposed to be 16 but Disney insisted she be 13 to draw in a younger audience). Finally, the video shows the garbage they pulled with Gravity Falls. I'm hoping they'll improve with Chapek gone - I'd assume anything released this year was well underway before he was kicked out - but that remains to be seen.

Unlike Sony's attempt to match Disney's standards with films like hotel Transylvania, I hope they learn from the greed they inhabited from making 1-2 sequels with less and less of a reoccurring plot and boring character tropes and preserve amazing stories like the first Hotel Transylvania movie and the spider verse movies

You're massively underselling just how much of a game changer Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss were for Indie animation. Instead of a brief mention at the start they should've gotten an entire section of the video unto themselves. In 2019, everyone thought it was basically impossible to turn a profit making stuff like The Amazing Digital Circus. The KZread Algorithm heavily incentivized frequent uploads. Unless you were uploading one video a week or more, KZread would stop recommending your videos to people and your channel would become irrelevant. It was an ill-suited environment for long-form, serialized animation. Then Vivziepop and Spindlehorse came along and started cranking viral hit after viral hit with TV Quality animation and expensive voice talent like Richard Horvitz entirely on an indie budget and released months apart. It's safe to say that without Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss there would be no Amazing Digital Circus or Lackadaisy or Murder Drones.

(At least some) kids around that age crave getting into darker content (stereotypically, that which juxtaposes cute colorful characters with horror). As long as they can engage in a safe and healthy manner (ie having the ability to separate fantasy from reality, + not watching something far out of their age range) I don't think it's bad to let them watch horror. Honestly, TADC is like the perfect media for that. Its garishly colorful "kiddy" setting even leaves it clean of the hard violence and gore that kids would otherwise come upon in their first forays into darker content. I can already see TADC becoming the FNAF of early Gen Alpha.

One thing to keep in mind with 3D animations is they are massively frontloaded, a lot of time and effort has to be spent sculpting and rigging a character, but once completed the character can than be manipulated much more freely. So while it will take time to make more digital circus the glitch team wont have to spend nearly as much time creating and rigging characters. This is one of the reasons murder drones is able to have a much larger cast, they are effectively all the same model with a different wig attached them. So adding an arbitrary number of drones to a scene only slightly increases work needed.

It’s kind of funny how non-Disney creations are getting tons of success while Disney is hitting new lows BECAUSE it wanted to prioritize profits. Stuff like TADC, Hazbin, Mario, and FNAF weren’t perfect, but they understood their audience and their stories. A super creative project with strong moments can be appreciated despite its flaws or will at least leave an impact on people, but a bland safe creation isn’t going to leave an impact on anyone. I can’t call modern Disney stuff abysmal because it’s not noteworthy enough to BE terrible. You can call Hazbin a terribly paced mess if you want, but you definitely remember it. Mario had almost no plot, but that’s what fans wanted. FNAF was basically all lore, but that’s what fans wanted. When we have creators that listen to their audiences, we get awesome content.

Idk as an artist I highly value having a certain aesthetic to tell more about the vibe/story of the media. I feel like new Disney movies lack this clear "vibe". It just feels like they're throwing colors and stories together, trying to make make it work. Take the Spiderman movies as an example, the artstyles differs depending on which character is shown, yet you immediately recognize each artstyle as part of the movie.

It was Alex Hirsch's decision from the start to end the show when Mabel & Dipper Pines' summer break came to an end as that's the entirety of the story he'd wanted to tell. I heard him talk about it somewhere years ago. No hate, just wanted to explain a bit more.

I literally screamed when when you mentioned The Owl House. That’s honestly my favorite show, the representation meant a lot to me and I was so upset when I heard they shortened season 3. You can just TELL which parts would’ve had their own episodes, and you can see how Season 3 had to be rushed and have parts of it cut out because it “didn’t fit the brand.” Disney tries too hard to be family friendly and that includes cancelling ground-breaking representation just because some of the content doesn’t appeal to Disney executives. Like you said, indie animation is succeeding because it actually appeals to what the audience wants and doesn’t strictly fit into the “family friendly” category. Gay demons? Murderous robots on a different planet? Cats who steal alcohol? Someone mysteriously trapped in a digital circus? People LOVE that as it is, but if Disney ever tried something like that it would mostly appeal to the younger audience and not everyone else. The Owl House proves that people DO like gay demons but Disney went ahead and mutilated season 3. Also, again like you said, Disney’s art and stories are getting repetitive whereas indie animation has a really big variety that millions of people actually enjoy. Thanks for making this video!

Not only is Primos a copied vibe, but a lot of the names used for characters have been called out as concerning or offensive and derogatory by a handful of creators in the culture the show should be centered around, you can find plenty of folks tearing the show down for many aspects like that. Funny how they throw a fit about 'chub' but don't seem to fix things when people are outright saying they have an issue with things. And how they threw many fits about Gravity Falls and Owl House despite those being their most beloved shows. It's like they *want* the studio to die at this rate.

I understand that even they suffered during that time but those restrictions were lifted ages ago and....well last I checked _they_ were the ones that had animators, writers, editors, and showrunners in spades. Honestly, indie animators need to make their own platform in which audiences have more and easier ways to support the projects and ways for the indie studios to help and support each other. Such a platform could have all the pilots for such shows free and options to buy or rent the rest of the series. Subscriptions kind of force studios to pump out more content, so I don't think a subscription model would be good. KZread is growing more and more corrupt, placing more and longer ads, locking features behind KZread "You had these features before, but now you have to pay for them" ("Premium"), and it is a little more restrictive than it has been in the past.

I think Disney is trying to "play it safe" and they have their head stuck in the sand of tradition without introducing innovation or "risks" That is what makes them stagnate.... Animation on youtube can be flawed, imperfect, it can be made by anyone even someone who just does animation as a hobby but those aspects also create the charm they have, it makes them beautiful and unique since the animators and writers are actually putting themselfs into their work and not some decades old traditions that were forced down their throat. They also don't need to fear constant censorship. Animators on youtube are free while Disney animators are stuck in a birdcage of old, unable to take flight. It is a pity but I am also happy for this indie animation renesance as I hope to see more stories be told by everyone, not by a company...

The shows were amazing from art to story. The people behind them take risks and they say a lot tenfold for the final product. Quality over quantity is a major rule that's also being obeyed HEAVILY with the indie animation industry. I would wait a couple good weeks (give or take) and have pretty high hopes for what'll be coming next. After that, I usually have a pretty good time (or get moved depending on the mood of each session). For all the indie animators, I wish you all the BEST of luck and success. @@skyesyd221 Are you saying that indie animation is a bandwagon??? That's like saying art itself is a bandwagon. It might seem like a bandwagon for those who don't appreciate the craft and think it a cheap and easy way to make a quick buck, but for those who have genuine ideas for stories they want to tell and are willing to face the possibility that their projects may not get the recognition they crave, it is anything but a bandwagon. Take it from a guy who's done his own independent animation on KZread back in 2010.

There’s quite a few indie pilots out there I’d love to see get greenlit. Long gone Gulch has some potential. Hullabaloo is a movie turned mini-series on kickstarter that just released with its first episode. Monkey Wrench is a funny sci-fi comedy that’s still going strong. And there’s still other hidden gems. For those who like indie animation, I recommend keeping an eye on these ongoing projects.

I just found the Amazing Digital Circus like 4 days ago and it's hand's down one of the greatest creations I've ever seen. I don't know how or exactly why, But I absolutely love everything about it. It's mindblowing actually the level of production quality that it has, And then you've got so much supplemental content (ie: they made a whole video of Caine saying Viewer suggestions, Because his voice / character is super interesting, and they're making supplemental content based solely around that, which is awesome -- They also made an entire video for a voice acting competition event thing, And it's got the real voice actors switching back and forth between characters and their real persons, It's just incredibly fun and extraordinarily well put together, and the Animators and VAs have made their own videos on their own channels giving extra content and behind the scenes content as well, which I'm enjoying WAY too much) that even with just the first episode, It feels like there's so much more to explore. It's Incredible and makes me want to aspire to create something that great.

Over the years Disney has restricted the creative freedom of its cartoon show writers, refused proper salaries to its talented film animation team, recently cut their 2d staff down to nothing, and refused to celebrate female staff who have saved their films multiple times. In my opinion, Disney has semi-black listed themselves in the animation community. And now new talent is starting their own independent projects/working for non-Disney owned studios, leading to a decline in quality at Disney. Chris Sanders moving to Dreamworks and making some incredible films is a great example of this.

12:35 That's quite a valid point. You can see this in various Disney shows, like Star vs. The Forces of Evil, which is basically a Disney adaptation of the "mahoshojo" anime genre (such as Sailor Moon or Minky Momo), and artstyle-wise it looks like it came straight from Cartoon Network. Another example is Disney's Amphibia, which artistically looks like a combination of Rick & Morty and The Simpsons.🤔

It says a lot about the current state of Disney when 2 movies by Netflix, one about a shapeshifting demon girl helping a disgraced knight clear his name, and the other about a 100-year old talking iguana (voiced by Adam Sandler) sharing his wisdom with the children of the classroom he's lived in his whole life, are better received/more beloved by audiences and critics than what Disney was hyping up for their 100th anniversary.

I think something people are forgetting to mention about Disney, especially in reference to Wish, is that many fans are boycotting the company in solidarity with Palestine. All of the points you made are absolutely true, but it's also important to recognize that Disney is doing particularly poorly right now because of issues many of us have with the morality of the company and the actors they are hiring. Disney in 2023/2024 is lazy, unoriginal, and arguably unethical. Many of us would prefer to support smaller studios made of our peers (younger creators who understand current memes and trends) than greedy studios who already have enough money and who don't support or reflect our values. I've not a care in the world what Disney tries to put out next, but I'm extremely eager to see the rest of The Amazing Digital Circus. The music is great, the characters are all so interesting and lovable, and the tone and humor feel way more relatable to me than anything Disney could dare to release. The one really amazing thing Disney has given us recently (in my opinion) was The Owl House, and what did they do with it? Snatched it away (probably because they hate queer people, which they've already proven in their emails to Alex Hirsch).

Here are at least 5 things I learned when thinking of the difference between Disney and Indie Animation. 1) Theme and Storytelling Indie animations mostly fall towards a more character-driven storytelling, and while Disney does focus on character-driven storytelling, they also convey it through an antagonist who acts as the catalyst that carries out the "plot conflict" of the story. Most indie animations I've seen often relied conveying personal struggles and introspective themes without relying on an antagonist, per se. Though I could also be a hypocrite for not considering other Disney movies that also do that. 2) Method of Visual Media Disney has been known for making movies with a definite beginning and a definite ending, what a movie should be, though I will still point out that they're slowly entering the tv series side of animation through Disney+. However, for most indie animations, I've personally considered them for being known to be for being animated series since it can help fill out a whole range of episodes for plot and character development. Though I'm not trying to insinuate that a movie will always feel "rushed", I just feel like indie animation will always give the writers more time and freedom to influence the direction that the story has to go, in a way that feels mostly natural and that they will find things they wouldn't if they had to make it into a entire movie only. 3) Maturing the content Sure, a lot of the indie animations are targeted to a wider audience, not necessarily including a younger audience per se, but to a certain extent. And yes, I know Disney movies are somewhat limited to targeting a younger audience, it only seems to do so due to its family-friendly content. But in the end there will always be fans who wouldn't have anything else in the world than to see their same old childhood franchise capture the hearts of a new growing audience. 4) Content Filtering And yes, finally, the level of freedom to make whatever you want. Sure, indie animations are known for being diverse and sometimes not being afraid to bypass both unheard and written rules in content creation. But for Disney, I would say there were rules left behind by previous writers and directors that shaped the way Disney creates their movies. I can't say for certain that they are, it's just that I doubt it wouldn't influence the future animation industry of Disney as a whole. 5) The Legacy of Animation While there have been quite a lot of new and upcoming animation studios making indie animations, Disney has had a long legacy and one that probably has been reformed for over a whole century (yes, 100 years is a great accomplishment). But the creative direction is never what it used to be, but don't get me wrong, the animation industry of Disney cannot fully recreate the same vision it used to have. So in the end, the new reformed legacy of Disney does not fail to succeed its own predecessors. It's just that a new variety of indie animation industries will always find their own audience to attend to and I think Disney is already doing a great job doing so, just not in the way you expected.
