There were 500 odd Royal families during independence. Countless others had been subjugated by the British and made into zamindars (gajapati kings, ahoms, nawabs of Bengal and Awadh, Zamorin of Calicut, Bhonsles of Thanjavur and Pune etc). Yet the people still respect them. In northern TN (The Carnatic), the Nawab of Arcot is still a huge patron of many Hindu religious festivals and Carnatic Classical music and Dance. The people still respect him even though his lands were gone in the 1800s itself. It’s a democracy. People can even worship them if they want. They are the torchbearers of the cultural legacy of India. As long as they don’t undermine the democracy, we should just let them be and enjoy the pageantry.

The old Rājyā system should vanish. We aren't living in a feudalistic society anymore and all traces of it should be turned into dust. Most,if not all-of the princes and native rulers were collaborators to the British(or,as I call it the Brutish) Empire. They should be done away with, casted into the depths of history where they truly belong.

@@dutt_arka Wrong. That is a mischaracterisation of how things were, because the White Man wrote the history you are familiar with. The White Monarchy has always been top-down, but the Indian rājya was always bottom-up - the Mahārāja had to answer to the people, and it was normally the most competent candidate to succeeded him or HER, even if that didn't include the sons or the eldest son (because they were not qualified for one reason or another). The ones who tried to enforce a top-down monarchy didn't last long because the people knew their place and the Mahārāja's place as the servant to the people. In the West, the King was NEVER seen as a servant to the people. You have to look to how things were BEFORE the first invaders arrived in India, like the Muslims and later, the Europeans. They merely corrupted the rājya system by force.

Indians still respect their royals. Most royals took care of their people, prevented famines that raged in British controlled areas. People show their respect for our history via connections to our royal past. Isn't that what the British Royals are doing? French Royals lost everything, including their heads to the guillotine, but the royals in Sweden, Demark etc are still popular. Hope the Royals still stay engaged with Indians and continue to share their life and homes with the everyday person.

But I am pretty sure that showing respect to the descendants of people who stood for their people,, i.e for our ancestors is in no way wrong. Being from Vadodara, Gujarat I am indebted to the Gaekwads of Baroda, from Maharaja Damajirao to Maharaja Sayajirao, one secured the people of this land while the other gave my ancestors free education. And "" common/public investors in his Essel® Group Empires, even multiple tax-evasions both legal( the so-called "Hindū Undivided Family( HUF)" alongwith his also-"undivided" brother with a surname of his own, Gōel**) - the HUF-enjoying oligarchs in Murdochs' veritable Indian counterparts also ended-up betraying homegrown but "not nationalist enough" in multi-branded consumer electronics giant Videocon®'s Meghdoot HUF. **What does it tell us? Well.. For starters, "#UCC"-supposed cheerleaders don't ever mention the ludicrously-unconstitutional HUF tax-credits - and the one-&-only of those to ring "the gentle-reminder", were the judicially-appointed committee members who signalled this "elephant in the room"/"oh-so-cleverly-hiding-in-the-plain-sight" costs that the Union of India bears every single quarter - in hopes to signal their fairness/integrity. Another legalised tax-evasion scheme, the companies incorporated/registered in the island State of Mauritius to the southeastern side of the Horn of Africa - except, only-&-only when the Indian State has to scapegoat "Imperial-descendants" like then-Vodafone® Essar® since the culminating months of economist "savant" MMS' first-ever term. Just few more operational-expenditures need to be borne-out, indirectly helped by Indian nationalists like Mr Mark Zuckerberg, the one-&-only _chic_ Urban Maoist amongst all of the OG Murdochs[ and not their "#fempower"/"#girlpower" hack in Ms Elizabeth 'Liz' Murdoch], Sir James 'Jimmy' Murdoch - and his family's "blue-eyed boy" here in India, yet-another "librandu" news-manager turned shrewd business-manager( there was even a OT only "#MeTooIndia" attempt on him, not directly implicating in the alleged acts of sexual crimes) in their "blue-eyed boy": Backed/Sponsored virtually in whole by Qatarī Sircārī funds: And no, this doesn't make said oligarch of A Gujjū strongman's beneficiary of propaganda-machine anymore related to venerable-&-deliciously-paining AJMN than AMU is related to MGKVP.
