That's because Russian doesn't have articles (the, an, etc.), so sometimes it's confusing for them to know when to use them correctly. I have a Japanese friend who does the same thing (adds "the" before everything), because Japanese doesn't have articles either.

2 plus 2 times 2 equals 8. You have to do the multiplication and division first, THEN do addition and subtraction. I learned that in algebra without a calculator. 2 times 2 is 4. Then add the 2, and it equals 6. Ilya's right. And he's awesome!:)

What's wrong with them? They are professional athletes, in a wealthy collective sport. So it's just that a lot of them are stupid and/or uneducated. That's what you get. And the education system, especially the American one, does not help at all.

From what I know, it seems that top athletes in North America are given an easy pass even in high school. I would not be surprised if they learned nothing there. Even some "normal" students leave some American high schools very poorly educated. The quality is obviously inconsistent and the unregulated system allows for selective leniency. Canada is probably a bit better than the US when it comes to consistency and quality, but I think that the lenient approach to athletes is there as well.

I know the math question is for jokes but it is confusing to say "2 plus 2 and multiplied by 2" and mean 2+2*2 since mathematical notation was invented to get around how ambiguous regular language can be. Just like "Cousin Mike can bring a plus 1 to our wedding" makes no sense if you switch it to "Plus 1 can bring our cousin Mike to our wedding". Even though mathematically mike+1 = 1+mike.
