For anyone watching this who hasn’t written their dissertation yet, this is super accurate and some really great tips - I did a lot of the same prep work but only after trial any error of other techniques, and I used mendeley for referencing. I lost momentum towards the end though and didn’t have as much time to polish the finish product, so if you can manage to be as organised as Holly, you will do amazingly! 😄

Having applied your advice throughout my final year, I am back to say thank you!! All of the advice was super useful and helped me score a high first class for my diss.
So glad I found your channel! Your study videos help me stay productive and motivated, and your other videos help me get through my bouts of anxiety!
Holly thank you so much for making this video, your advice in this video and your generosity in sharing your strategies with other people. This video is going to help me so much in writing my dissertation in the next degree I want to do.
Very helpful advice. I'm currently in the process of writing my dissertation and this has been very motivating and has given me a much clearer focus. I imagine you are a very good tutor to your students. Looking forward to more of these videos!
This was so helpful! I’m a third year microbiology student and currently trying to write a 3000 word literature review (preparation for next year’s dissertation). Love all your tips 💚💚
Thanks so much for the video Holly!! I used to directly copy&paste the papers I read. But every time when I review my notes, I have to read the original papers AGAIN because I couldn't remember the details. I tried your strategy this morning and it worked so well!!! It's the first time I had a such clear picture of my topic and the related background. Huge thanks for your tips! You did save my life!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much Holly! I am currently working on my dissertation (on architecture) and this is very helpful! Love your vlogs!
This is definitely the stuff I need to be watching!😍❤️
That was awesome Holly. Thank you!
This was so helpful 💓☺️ thanks holly! Makes it a lot clearer xx
Definitely coming back to this video when I start uni!
A really helpful video! Thank you Holly!
Oh my god Holly you're the bestest!! I'm an undergrad lab tech and my thesis is due in 2 months, but I'm having the worst time writing. We don't really get taught academic writing in college, so this vid is super helpful
Thank you so much! I am writing my MA dissertation in English as a non-native and I find it really helpful. Also learned a new use of the word waffle haha.
Thank you this is so helpful! Love seeing more video's like this!!
This is such good advice! Thank you!
Firstly, I watch every video of yours, so I don't understand how I wasn't subscribed, but secondly, I really do need any content like this!! It keeps me focus and reminds me that I want to succeed in University.
This is super helpful! thank you Holly :)
Thanks for inspiration Holly. You are wonderful amazing. 😊😀
Super useful, especially for IB students doing their Extended Essay in Science, thanks Holly! Only thing, could you discuss what you argued for in your dissertation? I know not everyone here's interested in Biology, but a few like me are! Keep up the amazing work!
I’ve been waiting for this video ..finallly🤪

Wow that was great and helpful! I am currently doing my bachelor thesis and your tips will be used wisely😊 Thank you very much from a fellow biochemistry student working in the tumor biology area😉
super super helpful!!! I wish I found this video earlier, at least two, three months early. Thank you all effort and information!
Thank you for this! I’m over my word count so ‘the power of removing waffle’ is what I need to work at x

This was so helpful, thank you! Hugs from Chile :)
Oh damn this is really helpful, I was using the boolean method to research because we were told to go that way and I have not started my work yet because i've got so many papers and haven't totally picked my topic yet
Thank you, very helpful!!!!!!!!!
Another good resource is the Chicago Manual of style.
You are a genius!!
Legend, I'm the most disorganised welp of a 3rd year genetics student and your tips have saved me from a bollocking from my diss manager. Big up.
Great tips
Hii Holly,Nice video, it's very informative thanks
very useful thank you so much
Such timely, detailed and clear set of advice on writing dissertations! Thanks so much Holy❤️ I wonder when you were doing the literature review, did you print off every paper for colour coding or just did it on computer? (basically tips to be organized during this particular stage please~)

This is interesting regarding how the English language is used around the world. You kept using the word dissertation and I kept thinking what is she talking about - a 6000 word dissertation? In North America we do a thesis at the end of our Master's degree (mine was a couple of hundred pages), and we do a dissertation at the end/for our PhD. We would call what you did an "essay" - you wrote an essay that was @ 24 pages long (letter not A4).
@AstrocyteBibliophile
4 жыл бұрын
Similar to Australia. I wrote a thesis/dissertation for my 4th year in psychology and it was 15,000 words of a research project that I conducted. You also write a dissertation of your own research for a Masters degree or PhD, which is about 80,000 words. In the UK it sounds like a dissertation is just a long essay.
thank u so much
Thank you Holly, this was super useful! I am currently writing my dissertation (cellular biology context), and I have got a question about while you were reading the literature to build your literature review, how many papers a day were you able to go through? I am finding it overwhelming - time wise - as I feel I am taking too long to read the papers.

Sooooooooo useful, and very timely. Can you make a video on academic writing pls.
I find this video motivational
Hi Holly, great video! Question...The point you made about selecting review papers and then hand searching them for primary papers to write your dissertation, how did you describe this for your methodology?
I have a really dumb question regarding the sub-headings you suggested we do as questions... do we put a ? On the end of the sub heading/question, is that acceptable for our subheadings for our intro?😂
Hi Holly (and anyone else reading who has any advice!) I'm currently writing my dissertation/research project and one thing i really struggle with is how much detail i need to refer to in studies? Sometimes i will briefly mention them e.g. 'this topic has been studied extensively in terms of XX, XX and XX (references)'. But I never know which studies to expand upon? Thanks so much! I'm doing a social science degree, Psychology and i'm doing a research project, if it helps!
I’m going to do my fisrt research paper next year even though it is about humanities~~ so do u think it is easier to annotate the paper if you print out the research papers you found instead of reading them on the laptop?
This is so helpful - thank you! This is probably a silly question but if you're not using the boolean logic to search on databases how do you find the review papers? Like is it literally a case of googling? *can't watch* I feel dumb lol! Our uni only ever showed us how to search using the boolean logic and it is so long-winded and I feel very overwhelmed with the number of papers I'm getting! Thought I'd been doing it wrong but maybe not after watching this!
Heyy Holly, so could you please tell how did you find the relevant review papers??
But how do you find those original review papers? How to make shure you found all of them? And how far off topic can they be? Like, if my topic is the tiniest part of them, how much broader can or should I go in my literature review? Great video, much appreciated!
@ellen5276
4 жыл бұрын
"How to make shure you found all of them?" such a good question. how do you know when to stop! it never feels enough.
When you said hey siri my siri opened and i just died laughing😂
Interesting, to see how the dissertation is different at different uni's. Slight correction to grade boundary's being the same across the UK, they are definitely different in Scotland 81% to get a first :( UoG... Combined research project and lit review, 10 thousands words, completely independent project worth a third of the degree...🙄

Wow how low grade percents ! In poland to pass you need 60% and for honours (only one kind) you need 90% :) so lets say your 70% in the uk is for us C+ at most haha ! Also i have written 3 dissertations already and am on my 4th and 5th (phd) so i dont know why im watching that but its interesting still :) In Poland the BA dis has to be 30-60 pages, MA over 60, PhD over 140 (and we write one after each degree, otherwise you dont get a diploma)
@runaway1996

watermelonxxx Not many people get over 70%, it definitely doesn’t equal out to a C+
@madlenox
4 жыл бұрын
@@runaway1996 in Poland yes, 70% is still the lowest passing grade, from 60 to 75 it is the lowest grade
@spikey0034

@@madlenox True. But Polish system is different to English. It sounds in some aspect harder, (to have to get 90%) - but it sounds like more people get 90% in Poland, than in UK, so that makes UK harder? Dunno. Every degree is hard haha.
@madlenox
4 жыл бұрын
@@spikey0034 to get honours on your diploma is rare (the grade on diploma is 70% all of your grades, 10% your dissertation exam, 10% your supervisors grade on your dissertation and 10% reviewers grade on diss), but anyhow - yes, every degree is hard anyways. In poland we have a looot of classes (more or less 10 subjects per semester) so going there requires time, but then on the other hand most of the studying is during the exams, so it is easier in this aspect i guess. Most importantly, getting a degree is free :D the systems are definitely different and each has its advantages :)
