How I Went Zero Waste in 90 Days

Ғылым және технология

Check out Bunz: share.bunz.com/kurtisbaute
I wanted to reduce my waste and share that process with you, so I decided the best way to do that would be to hoard my trash for 3 months. Honestly, I was quite surprised with how things turned out. I did not think it was going to be so easy to make such a big difference in my environmental footprint.

Hey Kurtis , here is an idea , make a bullet point list of all your steps taken with reasons and maybe we can make it go trend on Reddit , and make a change in someones life and our planet

Dear humans, let us follow Kurtis’ example and take initiative to reduce our wastes. Evidence is making it increasingly clear that if we want our children and grandchildren to enjoy a planet with all its natural beauty as we have, then we MUST take green initiatives, push for renewable energy R&D, and live green! Plus, as Kurtis mentioned, it often boosts your own quality of life in the process. Thanks Kurtis!

In my native Norway they even wrap individual vegetables in plastic. God only knows why when the whole country is basically a giant refrigerator most of the year, but yeah that's just what we do. Then we gloat about how we've already saved to world because we recycle about half of that plastic. Yay. I think it might be too late to change enough in time to save us. l suppose there is still a chance but yeah l'm pretty sceptical. I moved to Morocco a few years back and the culture here is a lot more like how Kurtis described, and yeah, just as surprisingly easy to adapt to.

Tom Tom idk if your asking this ironically but buying kind of defeats the purpose in most cases. Your first instinct shouldn’t be to buy but thrift, upcycle etc. for example, don’t buy a reusable bag or a cutlery set just upcycle an old backpack/purse and bring your own metal cutlery from home. Napkin can be old cotton t-shirts cut up. And try to get some materials from people around you who don’t need the stuff anymore like containers or water bottles from family, friends, swap meets, consignment stores, and thrift shops. Then, after your exhausted all you your other options should buying be an option. usually the other options that I listed will have what you’re looking for.

In Denmark they have a mobile app system calles Storebox. You associate your debit card number with an account and when you buy stuff in participating supermarket chains, the receipt will not be printed, but send to your phone - where you could also pull it and use it for analyzing your shopping behavior. This has the potential to remove a lot of the receipt waste.

Awesome video Kurtis. I'm in awe of how you managed that. The junk mail I get alone outweighs all of your months recycling. It makes me sooooo angry. I also HATE how much plastic supermarkets use, especially on fresh fruit and veg. It makes this going zero waste very difficult and we need these big companies to take some big steps to reduce this.

100%. We absolutely need to get some big corporate change happening. I recently sent my bank an email saying that if they didn't stop sending me trash I would switch banks. I will actually do that if I must, and it won't take them too many consumers to switch before they make some changes. That said, we need better+more political regulations on all sorts of waste creation things. But that is, perhaps, a future video...

All this is good to keep in mind. But we can also get into more nuanced situations. Frozen fruits and vegetables are part of a far less energy intensive product cycle.... unfortunately frozen foods often come packed in plastic bags. But is the use of plastic in this case less harmful than the more intensive fresh produce cycle? Better yet, there are countries where it is the norm to sell frozen foods in bulk bins where you bring your own containers. Always good to keep on thinking.

One thing Im glad about is that I live in a village and we all own houses and gardens. My family has a composter - just a place to throw all the bio garbage to let it rot and be used for trees or something. We collect plastic bags, we literally have hundreds of them. I collect straws. We use those eco or sewn bags for shopping(much better in terms of build quality). Im also vegetarian for a year now, and my favorite way of transport is cycling, or if I must - public transport. I dont plan to pass my drivers license anytime soon. Not interested.

I have a tiny freezer... but I really should have borrowed one for this project and done that - now that you mention it. Would have been cool.

The local supermarket got rid of plastic bags, and gave out free cloth reusable bags for about 18 months. There's still locals who complain about having to buy plastic bags for 15¢ each... They were literally just throwing the reusable bags away because they were free.

It’s going down. I feel the change. I remember I used to watch documentaries about climate change and waste in 2004, and felt like nothing was changing. Now though, it’s becoming pop. It’s becoming “the thing”. I think we can make it, goddamnit. I think we’re the generation that will save the world! Let’s do this.

This comment makes my day. Yes. I totally agree. I look at the school strikes taking place, and the way everyone is now talking about it... and I think its definitely starting to shift. We've got a long road ahead, but I think we're finally getting on it.

Do a video on which are the ways we can have the most impact on improving environment? Going vegan, zero waste, driving an electric car & having solar panels etc. I'd be curious to see they stack up against each other

The thing about that is, unfortunately: it's complicated. It depends so much on your geography and situation. For example, it'd be probably be bad for me to buy a new electric car because as it is I rarely use a car and can rent one when I need it. For a lot of people an electric car would be a huge positive/good change in their footprint. I could write pages, but... hopefully that makes sense?
