I used mind maps as a summary when teaching. The ability to add documents, notes, diagrams was key. I also found that getting my students to create their own mind maps really help to embed the content and link different topics.

I teach Mind Mapping in my classes. I had a tough time in Grad school and a professor introduced this to me and I never let it go. I was able to knock out my disertation in a few weeks with this process. I later told them that they needed to lead their classes this way because it helped bring so much clarity to their material. Keep rocking.

Since you teach mindmaps I am hoping that you may have some pointers: I am a graduate student and am trying to utilize mindmaps for presentations and papers. I am trying to figure out the process of putting my information into the mindmap. I have pages of information in an outline format, and I want to get the information into a map without having to manually cut and paste all the data to each individual bubble (which will take hours). I know mindmeister has that but I now have Ayoa. Sin Is there a way to create a map by inputting the basic outline and then insert details once the map is created?

Thanks for promoting mindmapping idea! I've been using mindmapping since -90's and it's mighty method. Xmind is my daily tool today. I use it for brainstorming, presenting, note taking, business planning etc etc... I've been testing many aplications e.g Mind Manager (expensive but powerful), Simple Minds, FreeMind, Xmind and web based tools.

When I was a kid Junior High age, I began taking notes this way, it seemed natural the way the way I was thinking. In school they were teaching diagram, I believe it was called where you used either numbers or capital letters and then the subject, and so forth. I couldn't listen and concentrate on the notetaking technique, so I used mind mapping which at that time I had never heard that word. My brother encouraged me to continue taking notes that way.😀

Great tips! Long-time mind-map user here. I have used TheBrain (formerly ‘Personal Brain’), as a more dynamic, almost 3D knowledge management system. It is similar to Evernote in its indexing capabilities and can replace your entire folder system if you so choose. The “thoughts” (think ‘nodes’) are very flexible and can hold any number of different file types, most of which can be indexed and instantly searched across your entire “Brain”. I have been using it since v4 and it’s been a part of my work-flow for many years now! I love being able to access any information quickly and view it in relation to other linked knowledge in my Brain. Thanks for this view into your own application of mind maps!

I keep track of all kinds of things, books, movies, tools, info from web pages & Wikipedia entries, photos, videos, PDFs, basically any kind of digital information. It has a Timeline with which you can track events, appointments, etc. Can't say enough about The Brain!

Love this! Mind mapping is a super powerful technique both for planning what you want to say, and for the actual presentation delivery. Most bad presentations are actually about an incoherent or non-existent structure or flow to the content. Mind mapping helps you to structure your thoughts more clearly, and even if you don't actually use the mind map to present, whatever presentation format you use will be improved by having mapped out your ideas first!

Just found your channel and love it! Thank you for your content. I couldn't help but notice your mind maps remind me of flowcharts, as in what I learned to do when developing easy computer programs to help tutor class mates and easily reinforce my own lessons in a computer class I took in the mid 80's. Apple II and IIe, now considered dinosaurs. One big regret I have is not staying current with computers back then, giving up when the going got tough. I am trying to learn Inkscape, and I think there is a way to make mind maps using Inkscape software. A head injury left me disabled and my income is limited but I try to not let that discourage me. I'm all about free software and trying to learn Inkscape and GIMP since my plans to go back to school fell through due to Covid precautions and other issues.

One of the reasons I left Evernote for Obsidian is Mermaid, a text-based diagramming tool. Creating simple mindmaps is easy and I can style them, display them on notes, slides, web pages etc. Originally I used it to quickly create website flowcharts but mindmapping is quick, once you've learned the code. Other diagrams like Gantts and pies are possible, all the way to more complex diagrams for programming. It's not a beginner tool, but it's fairly easy to learn. Ayoa is probably better for most people, since you can create maps as fast as you can think, especially with the ability to add more content to nodes and collapse/expand sub-nodes (semi-possible in Mermaid with some fancy CSS/JS) but anyone already using Obsidian should take a look at it.

Be sure to, (1) add links to nodes for additional demonstration or explanatory material. I link out to PowerPoint slides, resident and KZread videos, pdf files, calculators on another website, graphics, quiz or poll, signup form, etc., and (2) add a branch at the end of the map to present a compelling summary or (3) interact with the audience and co-create a summary from their input using call-and-response facilitation.

Glad you posted this. I've been teaching mindmapping for over 30 years. Many years with MindManager. Unfortunately they raised their price so much in the past few years I've decided not to use them any longer. I have returned to having fun doing them by hand with a white board at first, then a drawing table with color or a draft in pencil. I've reviewed all the MM apps out there and none compare to MindManager. I'm semi-retired now; thus, don't need all the interaction that program uses. I'm so spoiled though. Want to choose one soon though. I'll check this one out.

Hey Steve, I LOVE mind mapping for BRAINSTORMING and for turning the mishmash in my brain into something visual that I can play with. HOWEVER - I would caution against projecting your mind maps to audiences, and here's why: 1) Not everyone loves visual thinking. For example, when I see somebody else's mindmap, I for one think "how pretty" - but I can't understand a whit of it until I get some quiet time to figure it out. If you're talking while I'm figuring, I short circuit. 2) Your way of laying out your ideas may clash with how other people in your audience learn and understand 3) Showing too much text will tempt people to read; while they read they cannot listen (sorry, that's a human limitation) That last one is happily solved with the collapse feature in Ayao ;-) In spoken communication we know that text/graphs/statistics (anything that takes system 2/abstract thinking) should first go through a huge relevancy filter. These tools distract from the speaker and are potentially as useful as they are potentially damaging to the process of communication and especially persuasion. Mind maps can be complex and are abstract. When we challenge listeners' limited cognitive resources, there better be a darned good reason for it. Having said all that, I love your videos - especially because they get me thinking and trying new stuff!!! -Lisa

I had one for starting a movement class on Zoom, but not onsite, so I asked them what they were looking for and now I know what to use to create it. I tend to go with the flow, so hello mindmapping! I have begun using Snagit to create better handouts after my workshop. I look forward to this idea for making the material and presenting this way!! Questions: Does it easily have pics and other docs added in the notes? Is it easily sent and received/opened to read by anyone for after notes?

Simply label them as Parent 1, Parent 2, Parent 3, etc. Then branch off with Child ( or “Sub” ) 1, Child 2, Child 3, etc. Start at the farthest nodes and change the labels to reflect your reverse preference, modifying the structure as you proceed.

I actually have a colored markers and paper and I mind map on that. If I need to share it, I just scan it and create an image or pdf out of it. When my free trial runs out ..... wait, its a permanently free solution for me!!

That's exactly what I was going to say! Is there a way to export the mindmap to Prezi or import a mindmap into prezi? I think the main advantage of these apps over Prezi is they are more intuitive to enter the data, but Prezi makes the visuals so much better!

I've created a Mindmap and want to send out a shared link to several thousand people. How can I make my Mindmap view only when I send it out? In some tests I've done the shared map can be edited by anyone I send it to. I know I can go into the invite list and see who opened it and then make that person view only. But let's say I send this to my email list and may 100 people open my mind map and start making changes to it. Then, everyone else will see those changes and they also show up on my own Mindmeister map. This can totally destroy the map that I created. People start adding, changing, deleting, etc, not knowing they are changing my own mind map be anyone else who opens it. How can I avoid this?

So should we be saying, “Laziness is the Mother of Invention”? People usually say it’s “necessity” but maybe it’s really “laziness.” The truth is we all love living streamlined and simplified lives.

Don't even see you mention the real reason to use mind mapping. Inspiration is the best mind mapping tool. Windows only which is sad as it was the first software of it's kind, on the Mac.

Too bad I do not know if it still exists, I have searched and searched. The people who develop UI's these days seem to think: More com[ex is better. Clueless! Make it clearer!

That's just decision tree branding that is non binary. Look up Morse code tree to learn Morse code, or words to those effects. Get the whole Morse Code alphabet in dits and dahs. Notice, my last name Shields, is ... .... .. . for S H I E in Morse code. Start at the primary node at the top of the tree. It's empty.. When you come across a letter in the alphabet that starts with a dit (.), Look for another like the (..) for the letter i. Build all other dit letters to the left, and all of the dah (-) letters to the right. Do the tree moves from the empty node to the left, and that first left most node ( dit . ) It the first nice built to the left of the empty node and the first dah (-) matches it to the right directly because the empty beginning node. Now I have an empty node with two balls hanging off of it on the same level, dit to the left, dah to the right. Now the single Dah is the letter T. Dah Dah of the letter O. Dah Dah Dah is the letter M. It gets sweet here in out. The first letter of the alphabet is the letter a. It is a dit dah, (._). It goes beneath the kennel advise it which is a single dit, to the left. So, hang two more balls hanging off of the single dit, on level below it. In that farthest left dit, goes, Dit Dit.(..). In the right side of this tree, we still have a single Dah, so beneath that noise, draw two more boxes beneath it and in the new node that goes the the right, next node beneath it, goes Dah,Dah, and so on. You now have 9 letters of the Alphabet coffee into the decision tree, now out the alley letter that goes with those dits and dahs into the node ball that goes with those symbols. You have Throught Tree developing. As you work down the branches a (.._) goes on the left side and the (_..) goes on the right side. Since these symbols are the symbols, they go on the horizon level containing three symbols. It gets hard to forget the dits and dahs that are associated with the application letters.. Once you know that _ __ ___ spells Tom, and . .... .. . Spells Shie, you can make memory silly sentences that uses each first letter as you move down the tree in the left to the far left, Shie, and the Tom as you go down the tree to the far, through the right nodes. You'll never forget it. Bad boys rape our young girls but Violet gives willingly(sorry), becomes, Bad =Black, Boys= Brown, Rape= red, Girls = green, But = blue, etc. Now you know the code code numbers for electronic circuit boards, resistors. You'll remember that in your death bed. So too, sell you forever remember your Morse Code symbols by making up silly sentences repeating those nodes as the grow downward on the decision tree. It's permanently burned into your brain and you don't forget it in your Death BED. THAT'S A REAL MEMORY MAP!
