Hi! How exactly do you remove the heatspreader/cover? Can't seem to find an easy way on my laptop without bending all the clips or damaging the motherboard. Thanks! Edit: also for future viewers in some versions of the pavilion x360 line up you have to remove the keyboard to access the internals (simalar to as shown here but uncliping the kb not the back)... Then also *carefully* compleatly remove & flip the motherboard to access the SODIMM slots (which are of course covered with the heatspreader thingy!)

So I don't talk about that in the video but it's on another comment in this video. Due to the compact nature of laptops, the CPU and the GPU come embedded in the motherboard, so it's impossible to upgrade them. Furthermore, many low-end laptops don't come with a discrete GPU (just like this one) they only come with integrated graphics in the CPU. Hope this solves your question.

To be honest I'm still trying to figure this out, I've done a lot of research trying to find if I can run both the ssd and the nvme plus how to change the bios and I've only been able to find which nvmes work with the laptop, but still nothing about the bios, I guess it's one of the problems of buying devices like this.

Can you give me the information on the upgraded hard drive you upgraded to?

Technically speaking you don't need to remove it. It is more a safety feature so there's no possibility of any electric charge running on the system while you're working on it.

It looks to me like there is an M.2 socket for SSD, so one could use that for the OS, and the existing spining HD for data storage. Is that correct ?

That's correct... that's exactly what I would've done if had known there was an M.2 socket...the only thing to keep in mind is that if your model comes with an Intel Optane module, it will be installed in this socket so you would have to choose what do you prefer, the M.2 or the Optane

I just bought one of these and it must be a newer build I do not see the RAM anywhere, when I remove the heatspreader, which is different in shape, there is only a 512 PCIe M.2 SSD drive?

It could be possible that they changed the internal layout, this laptop is roughly 5 years old at this point...also check if yours came with soldered ram, that could be another possiblity

Couldn't say for a fact but almost all laptops have fairly similar opening procedures, just make sure to remove all the screws, if you're trying to pry open the edges and it seems harder than it should, a good rule of thumb is that you may still have an extra screw that didn't see before.

As far as upgrading to a 1Tb ssd I would say that for sure you can, like I said, make sure to check the videos on youtube on how to do it properly, especially because you'll need to clone your ssd....now for the ram upgrade it would be better if you checked if your laptop has two ram slots (which I'm 99.99% sure it does) but most importantly check the speed, CAS latency and timings of the ram that's already installed.

Dual rank memory is slightly better than single rank memory, but only in single digit percentages, so if you have to pay 50% more for a dual rank memory instead of a single rank just to get barely a 5% boost I don't see the value there...that being said, if you are looking for best performance and have the budget by all means go for the dual rank, as always check that the memory you are going to install is compatible with your system or least check if you can return it if it doesn't work properly.

Justo había escrito el reply y no me di cuenta de que me preguntaste si hablo Español haha si fijate como le decía a otra persona que preguntó, lo mas seguro es que chequees cuales son las especificaciones del SODIMM, asegurate que tanto los tiempos (timings), la frecuencia (frequency) y la latencia (CAS latency) sean iguales entre ambos módulos. Tienes dos formas de hacer esto, puedes investigar en Google el modelo de SODIMM que trae tu computadora, el problema con esto es que a veces los fabricantes cambian de proveedores o usan modelos diferentes sin que uno sepa. La mejor forma es simplemente abrir la computadora y sacar el módulo instalado para poder ver la marca y número de modelo y con eso buscar el google la especificaciones exactas.

@@saratkumar5231 Sure, no problem, so I was telling him that, as I responded to someone else, the safest way to go is to check the specs of the SODIMM that's already installed, make sure that the timings, the frequency, and the CAS latency so they are the same. There are basically two ways to do this, you can look around in Google to see which SODIMM module comes with your laptop, the problem with this is that sometimes the PC companies tend to change suppliers or they use different RAM models without the user knowing. The best way to be extra sure is just to crack open the laptop and take the installed module out so you can see the brand a model number and with that, be able to Google the information. Remember, the RAM that I use in this video was compatible with my laptop but it may not be with yours, make sure to check which RAM is installed in your laptop.

Ohh I didn't know there's was a model with only the M.2 drive, so in that case, what you need is a ribbon-style cable, the service guide states that the part number for that cable is L18218-001, you could try maybe on eBay or just googling it to see if it's for sale to the public.

So to be honest I'm not sure, I haven't had any issues so far in terms of temps with the computer but I think that the metal lid that covers the ram sticks works sort of like a heat shield. Now if you have some heat pads or heat tape laying around I don't think it would hurt at all to use it. Well you must have been struggling with that RAM brother.

@@goSomewhereElse Honestly I felt the biggest difference on my PC when I went from an HDD to an SSD, but now I want to get a SATA M.2 as a main drive and leave the SSD for mass storage, since I saw the M.2 socket while upgrading the RAM. I'm still researching to see if that's possible or not.

You can't....on laptops, the CPU is embedded on the motherboard, you can only upgrade RAM and storage up to certain point on laptops, is the price we have to pay for the mobility and small size aspect of laptops.

You gotta be extra careful, there are a number of metal tabs around the heat sink, yo have to very gently push them out to release the heat sink, it should come loose by itself if you have to use any type of force it means that it is not loose enough and you can break somethin

It would be a matter of checking if that model comes with dedicated DIMS for RAM memory or if ho cut some corners and soldered the ram to the motherboard...I know some brands like to do that with small laptops.

I'm not sure about that specific laptop model but for laptops in general, since they use SODIMM modules, the maximum supported RAM tends to be 32 Gb for dual-channel memory (16 Gb per stick).

Base on the processor it can run up to 32 GB of RAM. But the motherboard has a limitation to only accept 16 GB unfortunately. Check it on crucial.com

Ok so technically no, that's why I hesitated to take it off or not, because it doesn't bother with the RAM. That been said, since you are working with electric components, you should take it off for safety reasons, so there's no electric charge on any of the components.

Hello, like I said in some other comments, with these mainstream laptops is hard to know what are the real specs by just knowing the model number, you need to use the serial number to able to get more accurate information, you can get this by using the hp support assistant. The other option is to just open the case and check it out.

I thought it did, I know that for example swapping the HDD for an SSD would void the warranty that's why I waited to do it until the warranty expired. ​@@Devils_World I did some research, and it looks like it's possible since some models of the Pavilion x360 come with the backlit keyboard from the factory, I'm going to link a video of a guy that does an amazing step by step procedure of how to do it. Now, you'll see that is a tedious procedure, and you have to slightly damage the case in the process, plus it will never look 100% original after that. The good thing is that the backlit keyboard is not that expensive at Amazon, there are some models with good reviews from around $25 and to be honest, is a nice upgrade. @@Dimasarif_ you don't have to buy two of the same ram sticks, however you need to make sure that the ram stick you bought is compatible with the ram stick that is already installed, by this I mean that both ram sticks should have: same speed (shown in Mhz), same CAS latency (normally an integer number like 16 or 18), same timings (a group of 4 numbers something like 35-16-16-16), and ideally same capacity. You can find this information on the internet or you can simply take the laptop apart and check the ram stick that is already installed.

Does it support 2x32gb (64gb)?

To be honest, I'm not sure, according to the service manual it only supports up to 12 GB in "Two SODIMM memory module slots" that are non-costumer-accessible, but as you can see I was, in fact, able to access the modules and upgrade it to more than 12GB.

So they come with a sticky rubbery thing that normally let's you take them off multiple times, but if that wears off you can use a bit of regular silicon, don't use crazy glue or any type of heavy use glue in case you need to open the case again.

That's correct, that was the first thing I did after the warranty wore off...I then added an M.2 disk and, although I didn't notice any difference with a regular SSD it's nice to have two drives plus it showed that it's another option to improve these laptops

Another viewer commented a while ago that although the CPU supports 32Gb, the motherboard only supports 16Gb, you can check your laptop at crucial.com for free, thanks to @Abi Hariri for that info.

You can certainly swap the existing hard drive with one with higher capacity or most probably add an extra M.2 ssd if you don't want to swap hard drives

Yeah you can totally do it...you have two options here, you can either swap your current SSD with another one with more capacity or if your laptop supports M.2 type of SSD you can install a second SSD...I'm about to do the second option and I'm planning to record the whole process of installing, migrating the data from the old SSD to the M.2 and setting up the laptop so it boots from the M.2
