Concrete slab drain replumbing/ alignment was no fun, but finally got it with dry fit marking exact drain center.

The tile around the drain is perfect. How did you achieve this? A diamond holes saw? It does seem like the tile will fit under the drain but it seems you want it flush.

Usually 1/16” lower than the tile so it drains. Look up @Calidad Tools. They have great tile tools to make that circle perfect like my circle.

I’ve noticed in your videos your subfloor is usually on wood floor. I’m prepping to lay a tile redi base on concrete subfloor for a one story home. Can I lay mortar straight to the concrete and set the pan or do I need to do some kind of barrier? Your content has given me a lot of good tips so I really appreciate it.

Plastic bag or red guard like someone just mentioned will do the trick, per TileRedi.

My install went fairly well outside of a few hitches (definitely would not have been able to get perfect level without standing in the pan). Took about 2.25 50-pound bags for my 60x32 trench. 1 5/8" of mortar doesn't sound like all that much on paper but it looks like a mountain when its right in front of you, lol. Now that its dry, I've given it the knock test and it sounds solid as a rock for most of the pan, but a little bit more hollow sounding down the middle (imagine a 2" strip drawn down the middle from the left edge to the drain on the right). Not sure why that area of all places wouldn't fill up 100%, but anyways. It doesn't seem to have any give whatsoever, but I've yet to put my body weight in yet. Do you normally find the bottom gets filled up 100% perfectly for you, or are some small "voids" just par for the course?

I use a little less mortar than what TileRedi actually recommends because of everything you just said. As long as the base is set and has no deflection, its good. I actually have a damaged base that I'm going to test out! It's been super busy and the weather is not great, but I hope to get to testing it real soon.

2 bags are plenty for that size base, I'm actually installing a 34x60 as well tomorrow! Remember leave about 1/2" of space for the mortar to move around to the top of the ribs! If the rib gap from top to bottom is 2", put 1 1/2" worth of mortar. Good luck on the install.

@@TodayIWorkOn Got it in last night and boy was it stressful!!!! I couldn't image how it would have went if I decided to try and set the drain at the same time. Problems encountered.....The custom blend wanted to spread spread spread. Had a hard time keeping it off the perimeter as per instructions. It just kept creeping to the edges. Also, my drill burned up and actually caught fire mixing the second bucket of mortar. It was crazy, it was smoking super bad but I was like I HAVE to get this mixed lol. Also it turned out that the two bags was NOT enough for my application. My deepest rib was 2 3/8th so I marked a shim at 1 11/16th. Two bags simply was not enough. So while two buckets were spread on the floor, I had my buddy keep working it, and I frantically ran back to HD for a third bag. Litterally running thru HD 20 minutes before closing lol. Pulled out my Dewalt cordless as my big 1/2 inch plug in burned up , mixed up half the bag and added it to the floor. Finally dropped the pan. PHEW!!! Finished at 9 last night. Woke up and gingerly put my foot on the pan, feels like a cement sidewalk :). Going to wait another day to let that huge amount of mortar to cure. Glad to have that behind me. Excited to start putting up the backer tomorrow!

We are installing a custom Tile Redi base with a trench. We’re first timers at doing tile inside. (We did a patio 10 years ago and that is the extent of our experience) we are using 12”x 24” polished porcelain on walls and penny mosaic on floor. A couple questions,, how thick should the thinset be for the floor and I am having a hard time visualizing the wall tile around the base since it is sloped toward the trench on the end. Have you done any videos with the tile redi base and trench? Thank you for your videos! They’re very informative.

On Pennie's, very very small. Skim the bottom of the base then use super small square notched trowel. What I used in this video will probably work as well, I think it's a 1/8x3/16. Good luck with the project!

I have a very similar pan and plan. Mine is 34x60. Using a Mosaic on the pan floor and 12x24 polished, rectified percaline tiles on the walls mounted vertically. The initial cuts on the bottom are giving me anxiety due to the aggressive slope to the pan. I think I saw something where you put a laser level on the wall, put the tiles upside down and mark the level line. Now you scribe cut the tile and place. the top should come out level....should....:)

@@bdobrzensky I wish we had done the rectified.. I had never heard of it until recently. Our pan is 40x72 custom. We also used the concrete boards that really are 1/2 inch, so they fit perfectly.

Can I use regular drywall instead of cement board? I would cover everything with Schluter Kerdi membrane. Thanks!

Sure. Any substrate will work with the tile Redi lip. Make sure to buy flashing for the base, it’s called Redi flash.

I used great stuff foam to install my tile redi pan.. it’s absolutely rock solid

Two cans of foam, sprayed it on the subfloor just like a mortar bed, put some heavy tool boxes on top to hold in place. Took me ten minutes. No mess at all. That stuff sticks to everything. A can of foam is $5, a bag of mortar is $10 plus mixing, plus roofing paper under, have to get it the right depth etc. a plumber friend recommended this method to me, anytime a mortar bed is called for he uses foam.

Great video. I'm a DIY'er and going to install a 30"x60" shower drain with a linear drain. From what I've read, drilling into the pan will void the warranty. How do you attach a c-channel for a frameless glass shower wall/door to the tile which gets attached to the curb? Thanks.

All of the glass guys drill into the pan, lol. Personally, don’t worry about it. Concerning the pan, either it’s rock solid and will last forever or it will be loose and fail. The holes that are drilled into the threshold are not going to bother the pan if the glass guys do the proper job. I’ve spoken to my glass guys and they drill into every substrate and that it never leaks. I know over the years of ripping out showers, the drilled holes never are the issue and never are wet. Just make sure the pan is set properly and let the glass guys do what they do. That all I can say! Thanks for the kind words.

Regarding the screw in drain top. How do you stabile it to the correct level for the tile as it just spins (threads) on? Do you also purple prime and glue this to the receiving threads for the thickness/depth you need. Otherwise it will just spin..

No glue, just set it about 1/16-1/32 lower than the tile and it will stay. The mortar and grout will lock that baby in and it has no reason to move.

Hi, thanks for the videos! They're so helpful. I have a couple questions, 1st our contractor subcontracted a plumber and he set our tile redi pan. Its been a while and now we are ready to tile the shower (diy) I'm noticing a little flex in one area, I am setting pebble stone individually. How much of a problem is this going to be? The slope is still there. 2nd question is the drain. Do i just screw it in to the correct height and use thinset under the edge or use silicone after the grout is in and dry? I can't find anything on setting the actual drain w/the plate. If you have any suggestions that would be great. Thanky you!

If it moves in a place you step, the tile is going to crack. What’s a little flex? More than a 1/32” and you might have an issue. You can grout around the circle drain. Set the height before you lay the pebbles but 1/16” lower so there’s no hill for the water to go over. Good luck on the project and thanks for the kind words.

But how are you setting the height. Caulking the threads? Packing the sides with thinset/redi poxy as you are tiling? I get the correct height how do properly retain it at that height. I know it sounds like a silly question, but I'm just about ready to tile, and set height with epoxy on the threads.

Hi. Once you use the plastic between pan and the subfloor there is no bonding to the subfloor. What is the point of the thinset? Isn’t it to adhere to subfloor? You can use primer no to mitigate the water issue or wet the subfloor. Also ditra is installed over subfloor. Also schluter and other foam board pans are installed on subfloor with thinset. Just trying to understand. Thanks.

You are not adhering the base, you are simply "setting" it in place. The weight of the mortar along with the base makes it rock solid. As you, it also took me a little while to understand the concept of setting the base on top of the garbage bag. You also have gravity on your side along with all of the tile you install in and around the base. Trust the process. Also, this is not a schluter system where it is a totally different setup. It's a great product if installed correctly.

My moms older house has a small bathroom. I measured 43 1/8” x30” is the widest pan I can put in. I have found a 42x30. How can you make up for the extra space

Hi, just last night I bought a Tile-Redi center drain pan 37 x 60. Once I opened the box, to my surprise, it had two boxes/bags of the Redi-Poxy in it to use to set the tiles. After I saw your video on why you use it was convinced. Now I see your above video that you used regular mortar. So I am so confused now. This is my first install. What should I use to set the tiles? Personally, it's your choice. The redipoxy takes WAY less material to stick the tile, but is very hard to clean up around the grout lines, so you have to nail the install with no mess The modified thin set is a way heavier bag, more of a pain to mix, but way more forgiving to clean if you are a little messy with your grout lines. I'm sure whatever you decide, you are going to make it look great! Good luck with the project!!

And can I build a knee wall on the curb, how would I secure it? My tiles, as your's above, would force me to cut the tiny triangles to fit the top and sides of curb, which I don't feel that I should do.

@@lburk9786 what color is your base? The same as this video? You can't build a knee wall with a curb. You can build a knee wall if there's a lip. It all depends on what material you would like to use. I like installing a solid piece of material on top, like quartz, then using the wall tile to follow the lines. I hope my answered helped!

Nice video! I have a question on my tile redi base (34”x48” with center drain). After installing and letting the mortar set, the outer edges of the pan lifted about 1/8-1/4”. I can’t figure out how to remedy. My drain is installed from below and my downstairs ceiling is already drywalled, so can’t access drain to remove the pan and reset. With the current slight movement around the edges of the pan when loaded, it’ll surely crack my tile joints. Any recommendations to get it to sit solid?

You have a double curb arrangement. How are you supposed to mount a two-sided shower enclosure without drilling into the curbs? If I'm reading the directions correctly it says NOT to drill into the pan at all. I bought a similar arrangement and I'm trying to figure out the shower enclosure.

It's in the directions for liability(leaking) reasons. They can deny a claim with that wordage. 99% of glass is drilled into the threshold for stability. Im not a glass installer, but talking to my glass guy, you can use this really strong 3M tape, but, it's not as strong as drilling into the finish material and anchoring down through the finished material. If your glass installer does their job, you will be good. The glass installer I recommend has never had a leak at a drill point, ever. Take it for what it's worth. Silicone is an amazing material 😬.

Pg. 2 of 4 of Tile Redi's PDF instructions on how to install their Tile Redi pans states "Using a 1⁄2” square notch trowel form a 1⁄2” thick modified thin-set bed on the entire shower enclosure substrate, making sure to apply the modified thin-set all the way to the edge of the drain bore hole." I ordered my Tile Redi pan today and even the salesman stated these exact words. I am not sure why you don't believe the other commenters who stated that. But great job and video.

This comment is throwing me for a loop so I just looked at page 2 of 4 and see nothing of the sort on what you are talking about. To be clear, this instruction is for A CUSTOM PAN! This is very important. On a custom pan you need to use a modified thinset to set the base. It's a black solid bottom. The pan I set in this video is a standard off the shelf pan that requires a non modified mortar (s/n) or what I like, a tile non modified mortar. I hope this clears up your comment. Lol. You almost got me questioning everything. In summary custom tile redi base- modified thinset to set Off the shelf-non modified. 😬

You don't use a notched trowel for this kind of base, you use a flat trowel. You're trying to make a 1 inch thick bed of mortar. If you use a notched trowel you are going to struggle with proper depth being even throughout. Idk why you guys wanna fight with him lol just go watch someone else's videos or go make a video yourself

Hey quick question for you been doing some research and can’t get a definitive answer, I’m tiling my shower, the base is a transolid tile ready base(plastic) then the shower walls are hardybacker, what thinset should I be using? The base is getting 2x2 mosaic and the walls are 12x12 I had already put mapei type 1 on the floor and realized it was not curing nor made for water areas… thanks much in advance!

Gotta pull it and patch it up. It’s not hard to pull up and redo. If you don’t, the tile will flex and come apart. Sorry to hear that happened. 😞

I loved using standard modified thinset mortar compared to the redipoxy. Less stress for sure. I just used it again on a trench... we will see how it sticks.

I usually do 2 coats on walls and 3 in a niche surrounding. Custom measurements, go from stud to stud. The edge of the base should be pretty much against the studs in the surrounding.

I have a damaged base at my house and want to do a lot of different tests on it, but I have not had the time to make it happen! I am going to soon, it's in the plans. Send me a pic of the damage to my email and I can walk you though it. I need to see the damage to see if it can be saved. Did you call TileRedi and tell them the base is damaged? Did it arrive damaged?

Hi, just thought I would comment on my experience here. I was able to get a free base on Craiglist where one side had been cracked in shipping. I fixed it with the superglue + baking soda trick. I just made sure that the superglue was spread liberally in all portions of the cracked areas inside/outside. It turned out rock solid with no leaks after water testing it. I haven't installed it but I'm going to use Redgard for the walls so I'll probably also put a light coat over the repaired ares of the base. This will be a lightly used shower with full access from underneath so in case there's ever a problem, I'll know. I don't expect there will be though. Thanks for your videos!

Same concept as roof flashing. It flashes the water to the base. The actual answer is the tile thinset adheres to the flashing and locks it in. There’s no way water can get past the flashing unless you over fill the the pan, but if that happened, the pan would leak at the threshold first. 😬

Do you still prefer setting the base with unmodified mortar instead of Type N/S? Been watching all your vids in preparation of installing my own and that's really the only place it seems you divert from the current printed instructions. I'm going to be doing a larger hex tile in the shower floor since I have the Wonderfall Trench model, do you think the acceptable modified thinsets listed in the instructions will do the trick or should I pay the extra for the Redi Poxy? Thanks!

Yes. I just set another base with the regular unmodified mortar. It just works better and is less chunky to work with. Also, I like the 50 pound bags instead of the 80. Lastly, I did contact the engineer at Tileredi and he was fine with it. Good luck with the project!

Concerning the modified mortar, I'm going to say it's ok, just skim coat that base first, then use your notch trowel. The tile feel great on my last project with the modified, so install with confidence. I'm actually installing more tile and will use modified mortar tomorrow.

I've noticed you using "Customblend Economical Non-Modified Thinset Mortar" in some of your vids, but with my luck the closest HD with this mortar is an hour away, have you had any success using other brands of non-modified mortar? My install is on a concrete slab (no plumbing access below) so, with the short pvc cement dry time for the drain, feels like I'm going to have to be quick and effecient at shimmying this down into the mortar and drain stub-up.

@@lodmaster any non modified mortar will work, so whatever you can grab that's close to you. Just make sure it's truly non modified(aka has NO latex) in it. You will be just fine! There's no greater feeling walking into the bath and having that base feel as solid as a rock!

Since you're so helpful, one final question before I dive into this thing. On the trench models, the instructions show a mortar depth of "deepest ridge minus 1/2 inch" for most of the base length (about 1 3/4" for my size base) and 1/2 inch for the flat area near/around the drain. There's such a large difference in depth between the deepest ridges at the far end of the base (2 1/4") and the ridges that approach the drain (1 1/8"), I find it odd that it all gets an equal amount of mortar. Should I lay the mortar flat per instructions and hope the mortar works its way to where it needs to be or do you help it along a bit by giving the mortar bed a slight slope to somewhat match the base?

How about roofing paper under it?

Sealant? The hook up to the drain is a standard PVC connection. Purple primer then PVC glue. The base is ABS waterproof and the drain is integrated into the whole system.

They make a flat curb and a curb less. Both options are available. It’s a super small base, so the curb looks massive. 🤣.

I just set a 42x60 center drain base and it has a little flex off the one corner of the drain. I think the mortar thinned out here. It has almost no ribbing near the drain, basically flat. Is there a way to fix this flex?

@@TodayIWorkOn I’ll send you an email with photos, but I think I’m going to core 2-3 holes and fill it with a mortar slurry or adhesive to fill the voids, make some ABS plugs and adhere them in and then Red Guard the whole pan. I think my mortar was too stiff compared to what you made in the video.

I picked up a TR pan off marketplace. It’s an unused 36 x 48 pan ($150). It has a fine powder feeling to it. Is that normal?

Similar question.. when I unboxed mine it has a lot of powder and flakes all over it. It's on the finished side and all in the rib side. I vacuumed it but there is still a lot on it. Almost like it's static cling. Should I rinse it outside and let dry before installing? I'm worried about it not bonding on either side

Isn't the mortar supposed to be 1" thick and then you lay the base down?

Mortar is laid in different thicknesses since all Tile Redi bases have different depths. This was a super small base which had very shallow channels. To be safe, I always measure the channel then take off 1/2". I actually did a test off camera once and only filled 1/2 the channel and the base was still rock solid. After doing over 30 of these bases, you pick up a lot of feel installing them.

Is the flashing necessary?

Not necessary, but for peace of mind, it's worth the extra 50-60 bucks. You can silicone between the substrate and tile Redi base. That's what tile Redi calls for in the directions if you don't buy the redi flash.

Yes, any waterproofing membrane works. It can be roofing felt or plastic.

Why not turn shower base upside down then fill voids wit slurry? It’s not going to stick to the plastic anyway.

Many times. Its actually easier in some ways since you can use the gravel in the concrete to really keep the drain in a nice position when setting the base. Make sure you put down a vapor barrier on the concrete before setting the base.

Thanks for reply. I've read people complaining about bounding to concrete. Adding vapor barrier messes with my mind on how it will bond together.

@@terrysherry5313 its not a bond to the concrete or subfloor, it's to make sure the base does not move or flex when you install tile. It also blows my mind! Trust the process, vapor barrier, vapor barrier, vapor barrier!!! Good luck with it.

Like almost every diy help videos you skip over things, such as when you said you were going to put on a skim coat. I don’t know why you would need it but you seem to have put it on, and then when you put the scratch coat on, the notches created a sound like the skim coat was totally set up, is this the case or what.?

@@robb1715the concept of the mortar is not to lock the base in place but to make the base stronger so there’s no flex to the tile redi system. Once you “set” the base with 100+ pounds of mortar, it’s not going anywhere. The base is locked in my the floor tile and wall tile surrounding it. There’s no place for it to go unless you pry it up.

Installing the Tile redi pan taught me to never use the Tile redi pan ever again

@@wocoranch our install was on a slab, client purchased pan and wanted us to use in a wet room setup because it costs more to return than cost of pan itself. We normally build our own pans, in this case we had to build up a base under tile redi pan to achieve proper slope for drainage to sewer line. We're skeptical about the integrity and longevity of the foam compared to mud.

@brianscott9323 with no previous plumbing in place?? Well yikes if the answer is yes. But I don't think that's the pans fault. I used this brand specifically because it's all my buddy uses now with his tile company. He says they are superior when compared to other brands or foam type pans and these are actually very durable. I guess I just trusted him and his experience. I think it will hold up really well for you man, give it to God at this point

cement board from the 50's? go board is 100 times better and 100% water proof (foam board)
