Lift off oversteer is what you're looking for ;) Its a very real thing that happens, and is on all cars, but moreso apparent on others. This is why braking happens pre-corner, so you can let the car settle mid-corner to get back some of that rear traction. This is also why trail braking is a thing. Unloading the rear tires to get some more rotation IIRC

Isn't this also because of weight transfer when applying throttle? It's especially important for FR drivetrains since most of the weight is in front so when you let go of the throttle the weight shifts forward off of the rear tires where your power/traction needs to be.

  • @bass2762

@@jeffessenn I'd say lift off oversteer is more prominent on mid and rear engined cars due to more weight being on the rear wheels during acceleration but during braking, a lot of that weight transfers forward and causes the rear end to act like a pendulum causing the lift off oversteer.

New trailer looks really helpful. If your fuel tank has provision for a fuel level sensor, you can usually rig up a pullup resistor to convert the sensor resistance to 0-5V or 0-3V voltage. Then start with an empty tank, fill up one gallon at a time and note the sensor voltage. Depending how flexible your ECU or dash are, you can convert from voltage to gallons or just set an alarm to remind you to fill up when the level gets below X gallons. Be prepared that the fuel level will slosh around quite a lot, the OEM fuel gauges have so much smoothing they will be slow to respond when you refill the tank at the gas station.

As Joseph and Ashes said too it could be whatever way his diff is configured that it might or might not lock under decel, which would add more instability/unpredictability in the rear

The on-power = more traction thing is quite interesting, thought I'd offer help if I can. To me, it seems to be caused by a suspension stiffness issue. I'm not sure how the weight distribution compares to a stock Corvette, but I presume the rotary (even with turbo and all other accessories) would be lighter than stock, leaving the rear end to be heavy. Off throttle, the rear end will want to pass the front due to too much weight transferring to the front tires, leaving the rear end loose and like a pendulum. On throttle however, the weight transfers to the back and gives enough traction for what's needed. (Think Classic Porsche 911) Other than adding/ striping weight to solve this, you can stiffen the front springs, and even go so far as to lift the front ride height/lower the rear. This helps keep the weight toward the rear for more bite. Tuning handling (without downforce) is 100% about weight transfer and how to manipulate it. Learning how to tune became much easier once I thought of it like that (at least for me). Hope this at least gives a few ideas! I don't remember the full journey this car has taken and what suspension mods are installed (or the full extent of your knowledge), so hopefully this didn't come off as classic "Internet Snob"

Sounds a lot like power off oversteer which is great in a front wheel drive car but rather disconcerting in rwd. Try softening the dampening / rebound in the front shocks or increasing it in the rear. Same with spring rates. Tyre pressure can make a huge difference as well. Less pressure in the rear vs fronts will also help induce oversteer when coming off the throttle.

By holding a tiny bit of gas you keep it neutral. while that may help in some situations, what you don't want to be doing is changing throttle input so much that it upsets the car. Next slow corner you take at some speed, give and take away throttle slowly and you'll feel how the car turns in and out of the corner.

Ik it’s sounds crazy (kinda counter intuitive) but lack of body roll of the chassis will cause u to have to gas it through the turns. when gas it it will force the suspension to tweak more and grip up on the outside wheels vs no gas u will scrub your tires and slide as your grips on the inside tires. Idk if u have any chassis braces or really stiff sway bars (specifically in the front) but I’d look there for answers)

Do people have issues with rev matching? if you can't rev match how are you even driving a manual in the first place?

100% diff issue. High revs coming off, the outer tire has too much speed over the inner and it has to go somewhere. Staying on keeps the slip not equal of course but stable.

The breakup coming out of corners is traction control im pretty sure. For the small investment, pick up a Chinese diesel air heater. They use so little diesel and pump out a bunch of heat.

I think u an crew can an will figure out how to make better fittings for those things an even if higher oil pressure or gas pressure aren't need who knows how much safer you will feel an how much harder you could push the limits of all ur builds by doing so man yall got this ! 👍 ❤

Issue with toy haulers is the room for a vehicle isn’t made for cars, bought a $70,00 toy hauler when I had a formula vee and it barely fit, bought a spec Miata and it is absolutely way too big AND way too heavy even with it only being 2100 pounds, toy haulers on paper are a great middle ground but realistically cars, especially rhabs, are just too big and too heavy for them

Learning how to drive fast, how to setup the car, debug the engine etc... all at the same time does not make for an enjoyable event : only two hotlaps. Seeing your struggle I would start over with the basics : get some 300+ threadwear tires and debug your ride height / suspension stiffness / geometry first. Then consistently reach the limit of your tires. Then learn how to go over the limit of the tires and THEN consistently recover (hello counter steer). From there on you should be a way more capable driver with hi grip tires and you should be able to precisely pin point what is that you are not happy with the settings. Good luck! PS: I was one that commented abojt heel & toe and I like your solution!

Dude, you need a small ass turbo that makes about 350-400whp. Get used to that and build. It will help you out so much and I would bet anything you would even be faster.

Does FabDaddy Isaiah have any desire to drive on track? If he does he deserves a few opportunities to drive. Hes always at the track wrenching and filming but doesn't get to drive. I would get frustrated even tho I love wrenching more than driving its nice to get a chance to drive once in awhile.
