how I repair and finish a repair without sanding ( let the trowel do the work)

Electrician has been at it again 🤣 yet more holes to fix, if you live in a new build house you will definitely have these repairs hiding somewhere. Show some love for the patchers who make them dissappear, sorry not to forget the painters aswell 👍n #drywallrepair #diy #plasterboard #realtime #easyrepair #renovation

Retired painter here. Need more plasterers like you in Australia. More often than not, they won't turn up to do patches in time for the builder and painter to move on, and the job is often delegated to the painter to do the job ( often for free ). I used to go 100% bezerker mode whenever I'd hear ''painter will fix it'. Ended up charging them double my rate for non painting related repairs and they soon learned.

Thanks buddy 👍 a lot of plasterers struggle doing patches , most try to do it with plaster and blend it in , which no matter how good you are on a trowel, the repair shows through when painted. Here in the UK a good patcher can earn as much as a good plasterer . Making repairs invisible is a skill , you are right to charge decent money for it . Good to hear you would do these repairs yourself , I've worked with 100s of painters on site , patching new builds and there's probably only half a dozen who would do the prep work on walls and ceilings, 99% just roller everything whether it's ready or not, for me I tend to notice that the older generation seem to have pride in our work , which seems to be lost on the new people coming into the trade .

I had to go out for a couple of hours and when I came back all the holes were filled, dried and re textured. I missed the whole thing. It was like magic. I wish I'd seen how it was done because they were beautiful patches and you'd never know they were there. Oh yea, that second piece of wood magically appearing was funny. I'd have loved to see how you did that. I put a drywall screw in the wood and use it as a handle while I screw the board in.

That's fine if it's behind a door or in a corner. If you don't sand a patch in the middle of the wall, you will feel the edges even if you cant see it... but once you prime and paint, it's very noticeable to people with good vision... 😅

Honestly I don't see the aversion to sanding .. most times it takes less than 2 mins for a patch this size to lightly sand away the edges and small lines .. then I don't even clean it very thoroughly since the dust mixes with the primer and coats the patch and fills in any minor imperfections.. mostly my concern is the patch looking better than the surrounding instead of the other way round

I would have done everything you did except glue in the upper & lower section behind the wall using two pieces of Gyprock, using screws to support the pieces in place while the glue cured a day later, then apply a plaster between the square gap ending up sanding it back to level and removing the screws then fill in the gap with plaster. That way, there are no nasty surprises with metal in the wall. I know you can use a stud finder, but that's the way I do things. If this was done in the bathroom, then I would have painted everything before putting into place because water destroys everything as well as attracting termites etc.

I remember watching a 1990's TV Ontario program where they were promoting 'Grrrl Power' home repairs that had this woman repairing a hole by "scrunching up newspaper" and sticking it in the hole ...twenty minutes later, after many surprised expressions as the newspaper continued to fall away on her, and the ex and I laughing our arses off, she finally filled the wall cavity up with two weeks worth of scrunched up newspaper and proceeded to apply a whole lot of poorly backed mud to "repair" the hole...later when it eventually came time for me to repair a hole, I went on to use this backer board method, which seemed intuitive to me. Hint: I affixed a drywall screw to the center of the board to make it easier to hold and maneuver into place, which I removed once the top and bottom screws were installed to permanently secure it.

I have had to make several openings to run or remove wires in my house, and use a 'self plugging' method when doing so. I mark the size and shape that I need, generally irregular so it goes back together only one way, and cut it out with a 'multi-tool' cutter, with it tapering inward so the removed part is a plug. When ready to close, I do a light sand of the wall and plug on the top surfaces, to remove ant paper burrs that could be above level. Then I 'butter' the edges of the plug, as a brick layer would do, and carefully insert back into the hole, making sure it is level and flush. Trowel the surface to mostly clean up. When dry, sand and apply a finish skim. When painted, it is completely invisible.

Sponge float is a nice idea for blending. I have always asked others when patching if they like sanding…usually they answer no so I ask them why add more filler than needed which requires them to sand? Way better to build up in thin layers vs one thick. Thanks for sharing!

Great video mate, but could you explain what joint cement you used and why you didn't just use the easyfill for the final coat. Cheers.

Thanks buddy, yes it's a British gypsum joint cement that I use, it's a premix fine filler you can finish with a trowel and water to save on sanding. It's hard to get the same smooth finish with easifill, no matter how good you finish it, I find when it dries it always needs a light sanding 👍

That's great, but no mention of how much skill it takes to mud like that. You are not just going to whip up some mud for the first time and lay it out like that. And that fast dry mud is great when you are a pro, but a rookie DIY is going to have a nightmare with it.

I usually cut the wall and the board at approximately 45 degrees so the board will go in but not fall through. This leaves about two mm to fill and no screws.

If you leave a gap around the board to the existing wall and fill it with expanding foam, there’s no need for scrim. The foam prevents movement which is what causes cracks so you just fill it as necessary and you’re good to go

I like having the board screwed on back to provide strength. All around that piece without a screwed in board and light knock around would push the board in otherwise.

It would be cool if you buttered the edge before placement. Otherwise you only have a surface coat, if theres any movement of the wall it may crack.

Great vid! I repaired the same type of plasterboard in my house, but used 2 coats of Easifil and then sanding after every coat to a smooth finish, and then painted it. Can't even tell there was even a cutout. What does the joint cement do?

Hi yes you have done it right, I try not to do any sanding if possible, that what the joint cement is for, it's just a pre mixed fine filler that you can finish with a trowel 👍
