how i record playlists onto cassette tapes
Because my car is an incredibly beat up and old specimen, it actually only plays cassettes, CDs, and the radio. Since my laptop doesn't have a CD drive and I happen to own a double cassette deck boombox, I record a lot of my own playlists onto tapes for the sole purpose of listening to music in the car. This video goes over the process I go through to create and record those playlists.
This video is a part of my website, LOUD+SCUFFED.

hey this was absolutely just a video i made for a college project, so sorry if it's kind of garbage/unclear lol - if you leave a comment i'll do my best to actually reply in a more timely manner from now on
I literally just bought this exact boombox from a flea market for $5!

Boy this brings back memories 😂 I used to make my own cassettes as a kid to go in my Walkman in the 90s. If streaming services were a thing back then and was as affordable as it is now I’d have a field day 😂
This is so cool and useful, but the fact that Jeff is the example makes it that much cooler. Thank you!!
Incredibly helpful and incredibly awesome music choice
I'm making tapes for a cross country road trip because my car doesn't have bluetooth or cd player. So happy when I found your video! This helps sm thank you!
Love this video and the comments. A modern spin on something my generation did all the time. This isn't a criticism of any of the contributors or their questions and I'm sorry if anyone takes it that way. To someone who grew up with cassette tapes as their main or major music format, they just highlight how quickly they have disappeared from the mainstream when people are genuinely asking questions about recording on both sides or how a C60 is only good for 30 mins.(yes, you need to turn it over unless you have auto-,reverse). Like how you are using a "retro" boombox, by the way. Anyone new to cassettes who bought a modern deck, I fear would be sorely disappointed with the sound quality. Even though yours would have been a fairly budget device at the time it was made, I'm almost certain it sounds better than modern ones that can cost hundreds.
To be honest, this has been a thing since the introduction of CD back in the eighties. My Dad would make mixtapes from cds that he would get or borrow from friends on to his stereo system with the CD player having an output to go into the tape deck. And then there is an input for CD player that goes into the tape deck and can be synced to record and play on both machines. Years later when I was in high school, back when everyone had iPods and iTunes in the mid to late 2000s. I used my iPod and a aux cable with an RCA on one end and plugged that into my stereo which has the tape deck connected in both input and output for the source coming from the stereo, and I would record mixtapes or albums that I got of iTunes to play in the car or on the boombox that we had lying around in the garage. And to this day I still record stuff like that for the last 17 years. I even used my computer to record stuff off KZread or other stuff the same way. Plus if you have a stereo receiver from the late nineties, make sure that it has a input for DVD/ VHS or Laserdisc with RCA audio input or optical audio cable inputs as you can record audio off of those on to the cassette if you have live DVD concerts that are not on CD or streaming services.
I LOVE JEFF ROSENSTOCK
The reason for C46 cassettes is because it perfectly fits the maximum length of a vinyl LP. C120 cassettes can be problematic, not because of the length, but because the tape is much thinner.
It worked! Thank you! I got a cassette tape from eBay and now with the right cable it worked 😊❤

Yo they make cassette to aux adapters, you just slide a tape into ur tape slot and it will have an aux cord that comes out of it that u plug ur phone w. It’s a lot easier than recording all ur music on tapes.
This actually looks way easier than it is lol thanks so much!
I would recommend getting a proper tape deck for a component stereo system if you want the BEST possible recordings. You don't necessarily need a Nakamichi Dragon, just some cheap tape deck from the 90s will do. (I reccomend a Sony TC-WE305)

I actually recently just snagged a whole Sony 2002 stereo set with a functioning proper tape deck for 50 bucks from a garage sale recently (worth it, it had functioning play + record functions for tapes as well as a cd player and radio) and I absolutely agree - the difference in quality is definitely noticable!

Hey there. (1) I totally agree with you on the C 120 blank cassettes. (2) If you have something like a C90 blank cassette you want to record on you have two separate albums you want to record on that tape it's always a good idea to record the longest album first. Make sure you use the same side of the tape you plan to record the longest album of the two first. After you record that album, play it back first. If it sounds good enough all the way, once the very last track ends, let it run a few seconds. After that, pull out any remaining blank recording tape & dispose of it.😀
yeesss finally i can make my own mixtapes thank you so much
You’re awesome. Thank you!!

Would I be able to do this if I had a Windows 7 computer and also what kind of boom boxes could I use to record? I have a Sony boombox but I’m not sure if I can also make my own cassette tapes on it.
Hello, I was wondering what materials you need to use in order to record it. Can I use a cassette player and still have good quality without a boombox? If so what cassette players do you recommend?

Hey soo I have a deck that has rca and a larger “PHONES” plug in it. Do you have any ideas of how I can do this so I can record? 😭
I had an app on my 2001 iMac that would automatically generate playlists from an iTunes library playlist. You could set it to CD or cassette side durations. I wish I could remember the name.
Can u stop it and switch like audios? Because I wanna make a playlist but one of the songs is on KZread because it’s not official so can I stop it for a second and switch?

Hey, so im having a problem: I got a 90min emptd cassette and i have like a USB cabel that with an adapter can connect to my phone. So now im wondering if i put zhe cassette in my walkman and connect the usb cabel to my phone and just start playing musik and pressing play on the walkman, will it start "recording" or am i doing something wrong
Hello! I’ve recently gotten into cassette tapes (collecting/recording) I was wondering if it mattered what music streaming service you use to record? I have an app I like to use called Musi, it is basically like KZread but it can play in the background, I like to use it because Spotify doesn’t have the remixes or covers of songs that I like. I was just wondering if that would affect how the audio on the tape would turn out. Sorry if this sounds dumb or is obvious.😅
The recording deck needs to have an Aux input jack. Very important detail there. The songs are going from a tablet's headphone jack into the boombox's input. Also: People should always wait a solid 10 to 12 seconds after pressing Record, before starting the playlist of tunes. The "empty"/white tape that is at the beginning of every cassette takes that amount of time to play--- and then the brown tape starts after it, which is what picks up the actual audio being recorded. Wouldn't want the beginning moment of a song to not be included on the playlist cassette.
Hello! My dad has a RCA 3 disc player and I'm planning on taking it, can i do the same thing on here with that?
i have an issue. in the middle of recording process, the cassette tape was slow down and stuck. I'm so glad if anyone can help this issue. I use the Toshiba Tape Recorder/Radio/CD player
C120 is fine if the deck is fine. The original concern was that the tape would be thinner and that would cause issues. Clean your deck and you'll be fine. C46 is great if you want to record vinyl records on tape. A standard 12" LP has about 22 mins per side.
You can just buy a cassette Bluetooth adapter for your car. I love cassettes, but it's the best option for sound quality on a tape deck.
I mean cassette to 3.5mm jack adapters have been a thing since the walkman CD players have been out
Just what I needed. I should be able to record off of youtube, right? My concern is the quality. can you control the quality of sound out to your recording device? Thanks!

@loudscuffed950

You can totally record off KZread - most of my music just happens to be already downloaded onto my laptop. The main variant in audio quality comes from whatever deck/boombox you're recording from - while this boombox recorded alright enough when I made this video, it's on its last legs now, and the audio quality is nowhere near as nice as that of my new one. In addition, RCA cables will definitely give you higher quality than straight AUX if you have that option.
Hey, great video! thank you - could you also record this on a walkman or is it just on a boombox? :)

Yeah, that's why I generally record in a very quiet and secluded room - it picks up external noise
unfortunately this video basically is just information that I already know. however it is very helpful to others who would not know how to record playlist onto cassette tapes. they do make Bluetooth adapters for cars with cassette players it's a cassette tape with a Bluetooth module in it. but since your car has a cassette player you may as well just make use of it and it's a really nice thing because as we know old nostalgic formats are coming back there are lots of modern millennials that have the latest vehicles and they wish they had cassette players in them.
Im just a weirdo who likes cassettes and ive tried so many ways to record them and I cant believe it finally worked by using my phone an aux cord from a set of beats and a dongle cuz i have an iphone 😂
What plug did you use to plug in your iPad to your box
Does that cassette recorder record stereo? (in both ears) also what kind of boombox is that?
Doese the aux cable go into the mic port and not in phones port??
Which port is it plugged into? It doesn't look like it's in the headphone jack
Hey, I understand that having ng a physical tape is sick and all and I do want to do this but if you want an aux you can just buy a tape conversion thingy (technical term) with an aux attached to the “cassette”. So it works the exact same as an aux and is pretty cheap, most electronic stores sell them. I’m sorry I don’t know what they are actually called.

@@liamgalwey5616 It's 30 per side, so if you made a playlist with 60, you'd run out of tape halfway through, have to flip it, and keep recording. Wouldn't recommend this because a song would probably get cut off in the middle.
Thinking of buying a Walkman but man tapes can be pretty expensive coming from someone who listens through streaming / yt, and most of the bands I like don't even have tapes! I'm wondering if this would be a more economic / practical idea...
