@@glasperle77 Yeah, you definitely can. I've seen people draw characters from Bluey in their own art styles and it looks really beautiful and cute. I'm a huge fan of 90s WB cartoons like Animaniacs and I also love Bluey and I plan on making fanart of the Bluey characters in that art style once I improve my skills.

its really interesting seeing like the polar opposite of how i consume media- i basically get into fandoms BECAUSE of fan made content and completely hyperfixate on whatever it is for a while, i had a good few months where i was obsessed with loki because i saw fanart on pinterest and that is not a rare incident lmao

@@lovisafryden5576 i agree here! i absolutely love seeing all the different fan interpretations of a character or show. i love seeing how a character changes across different peoples art and seeing people add their own headcanons or aus and such.

So as a fanart enjoyer, I don't think I look at fanart because I want more of something I like/love, it's more I like to see art, and fanart is just common and it's interesting to see someone's take on character designs , I have got into stuff because of artist I follow doing a lot of fanart of it.

For me, fanart helps me share my love of a show and I have fun making it BUT the downsides are that I often get frustrated that my rendition doesn’t live up to the original and I’ve noticed I sometimes force myself to make fanart of a show to prove my love of it. Fanart has brought me fun but has kinda… sorta.. killed my creativity and makes me feel like an art machine (also I love the yapping style video!)

drawing fanart is what made me improve my skills, i was so obsessed with a video game (still am 5 years later) that i was drawing every single day without fail. thanks to that, i landed my very first job illustrating a novel, with absolutely no education in art lol, so fanart is very precious to me! the thing is, it might be easy to write off fanart as not as original or creative as drawing your own characters, but when you get really deep into a fandom it's not just drawing an existing character as is in front of a white background. it's exploring sides of the story that haven't been touched on, relationships we didn't get to see, putting a part of yourself in the characters you love most. that being said, i am also just autistic lmao, so special interests tend to do that to you. i don't even participate in fandom anymore, yet i still draw and create things related to that game, because it stimulates my creativity more than it stunts it! at the end of the day, as long as you're having fun, you're doing it right

i'm the opposite. i literally need to restrain myself from watching new things or i'll go into a void of obsession and stop caring for myself and other things and even get depressed from the media or it ending. ah, the wonders of autism and adhd😭hyperfixations aren't fun at all, i actually envy you! if i don't write a million fanfics and draw as much fanart as i can i combust. it'd be nice if i could be less extreme. it's out of my control though.

I feel this SO INTENSELY!! I’m also autistic and have ADHD. I get so hyperfixated on certain fantasy worlds and characters, and get so emotionally attached to them that it’s all that’s on my mind and I can’t focus on anything else. it is so intense and I wish it didn’t have such a strong hold over me. of course, a part of me loves it - loves getting so much joy from other peoples’ creations and how much it gets my mind whirring with creativity and ideas. but I get too lost in it sometimes, and I want to live in the moment more. it’s something I’m working on.

I 💯 relate...I always thought something was wrong with me because I've never gone "fandom" for things that I like. I like a lot of things! And prefer some over others, but to create fanart can feel a bit of a chore at times. I'd rather watch the thing than draw the thing, or make my own thing.

I do create fan art when I'm feeling creatively stuck - when I want to draw but don't know what to make, I'll turn to my favorite characters/shows and take inspiration from there ✨

Finally, somebody I can relate to 😭😭 I always thought that I was weird for not getting super sucked inside fandoms like my friends do, I feel better now :,D

I feel like whenever i try to draw fanart i get too into the detail and i end up making something that isn’t even mine. Thats why your point of drawing original stuff stood out to me, because i never finish the fanarts i start. I want to make something thats for me that I’ll like. I relate to this muchly. I’ve never been much into fanart or making it myself. Like, I have characters and stories that I love, but I’m only really interested in seeing the creator’s works. I’ve seen plenty of amazing fanart, but don’t feel a pull to request it for myself. One part of it I like is as a learning tool for new artists.

I as a person who also does not get super into content. I really wish folks would not confuse an opinion with a personality. Enjoy what you enjoy and don't get personally offended if someone doesn't like the thing you do.

Here's a comment for your numbers. Also, your creativity is more attuned to making new things than re-hashing existing things. I always really loved your Tokyo Treat character designs. Those were goofy, but occasionally there was a corker in there! (and of course a transparent drink character).

I understand not getting into fandom, i think that’s honestly very normal in spaces OUTSIDE of the internet. I don’t often draw fanart, but I do quite enjoy it + fandom because I’ll get into particular characters and character dynamics, and I like to see the creative interpretations people have of them. Like when people redesign characters, or write fanfic in a completely different AU, it’s fun to me because I get both the familiar/comforting feeling of the characters i already know I like, but with a new person’s perspective behind them. This is especially nice for me bc I’m a bit “picky” and find a lot of major media to have unappealing characters or character dynamics. Honestly, a lot of my own original ideas spring up from going “well i liked the story/world/some element of this media, but i didnt like the characters/politics/some other element” and then imagine my own story taking the elements that I like and weaving it together with elements I’ve liked from OTHER shows. In the end, to me fandom and fanart is at its best when it’s being very original, sort of like making a collage with the elements the original media provided. That’s how fandoms like Merlin are still alive years after the show ended with no new content to speak of. But again- I understand why that doesn’t appeal to some folks! It’s great to support new creations.

I feel the exact same way as you kasey. Cant get into anything in particular. But can enjoy everything once then move on. Same goes for art trends and challenges. It feels like a combination of boredom and a desire to just not follow other people. I could gladly create original nonsense all day long. But on the flip side, I'm not very social and this has its drawbacks too 😂 so for that reason, I also wish something could draw me in, just to feel included.

I prefer original art but have found myself purchasing fan art on functional items because it is often cooler than your standard merch you can get here in the states.

Maybe it's my autism, but I can't enjoy media in a regular way. If I love a character, I need to draw them or I feel like I will explode. Currently obsessed with bg3 and yah I may have been drawing them daily for weeks now and have bought anything even slightly related to it that I can find. Couldn't even leave my students alone with it, they now know too much about bg3. But we also need people who make original stuf so it's always nice to see those who focus on that

6:50 I'm not a fan of merch clothing either. As someone with an hourglass figure and large bust the characters always distort terribly when I wear clothes like that. As much as I find my head and hindlegs only My little pony T-shirt hilarious, I don't enjoy wearing it.

Fanart (and fandom) is a beautiful expression of pure love for a media and a great way to practice new styles youve never have tried otherwise, but ultimately its just for FUN and NOT the ONLY way to do so! Its just one way. If you consume media differently or experience passion in other avenues (like in original art) thats great! I think the only problem is if ppl are judgmental or try to create a feeling of moral superiority out if it. But just not consuming or being into fanart itself? Thats iust a preference and totally valid

i actually like writing fanfic because the characters and setting is already established but I can put my own ideas into it as well, I'm currently working on a fanfic that uses the multiverse theory when the original show is just a regular police dramady, but through that I'm able to explore different concepts and relationships between the characters and get better at writing, and it's just writing rn but im going to make it into a comic later

I think I fall under the same umbrella as you. I personally have never become such a fan of something (video game, cartoon, anime, etc) that I would want to make art for it, and therefore I have never felt the need to make any fanart. I love looking at fanart, but that is not because of my love for the fanmedia, rather a love for the artstyle, use of colors, lineart and just my own subjective opinions of what looks aesthetically pleasing. When I draw, I often draw my own characters and scenes, as that is the only thing I am a "true" fan of. I hope what I wrote down made sense.

If fan art is done in wholesome fun, there is nothing wrong with it! It’s technically illegal to sell fan art without licensing rights, so that is up to the creator to take those chances. Just like smaller artists, larger corporations have the right to protect their brands like smaller artists - since at the end of the day, there are still plenty of characters that started as someone’s baby that eventually got to join a major corporation

I totally get it! Especially how you were saying like, you would love to be the kind of person who gets so invested that you *want* to draw fanart and stuff. I always feel weirdly jealous of people who get so attached to something that they’re drawing it loads, making up these interesting fan theories and fan stories about them, or just simply beautiful art for these characters they adore. Because just like you Kasey, I watch a show or movie, I enjoy it.. and then my interest ends there. I don’t really have much that passion beyond that to drive me to make fanart and so I almost never draw it even for things I ADORE! For example I looovve Good Omens, but I’ve drawn maybe like 2 Crowley sketches and one was because my friend asked me to lol. And that’s it. But I consume Good Omens fanart from others on the reg. I don’t know why, it just doesn’t scratch that brain itch for me to draw characters despite my love for them and love for seeing others draw them too. It’s a shame because I would love to just crank out drawing after drawing of silly guys from things I love and never get tired of it.. instead I’m cursed to always be like ‘man, idk what I wanna draw today’ 😂

I’m a BIG Pinterest user, I love looking there for inspo for characters I adore, but also for OCs. Honestly, because I’m pretty out of touch with a lot of media these days, since there are just soooo many options, a lot of the time I come to realize after the fact that a lot of art I “pin” is actually either fan art or based on/inspired by a series I just didn’t recognize! 😂

Making fan art is a compliment to those who made the thing in the first place. It always was. Selling fanart is another thing tho. I don't get attached to stuff easily, don't care about the "current thing" and if I enjoy something I don't go searching for fandoms.

I love fanart because I get to see characters I love drawn in different styles and sometimes doing things that are not canon to their media. At the same time, I love your original art and that of so many other creators.

I always saw fandom more as a medium of storytelling. Expressing feelings that I have trouble saying as myself, without the issue of feeling boggled down by the logistics of world building. I enjoy making my own stories, making my own art with my own characters... but sometimes I am so exhausted that I don't want to be in my own head and just want to make jokes through characters I love. That said, I've also created fanworks specifically because of being so caught up by seeing people interpret characters in a way I didn't agree with. And when it floods a fandom, that being the only interpretation of said characters or ship, it drives me up the wall to the point I go 'I need to do this right'. Which usually ends up inspiring more works of the interpretation I do enjoy, and I can finally crawl back into my cave and enjoy being a consumer again. Very much a feeling of swooshing my cape and going 'my work here is done'.

I feel similarly about fanart! I don't mind it, but I'd much rather see original characters and ideas & that's also what I'm here for (as well as watercolours, haha). I find it difficult to find arists that are really dedicated to their own creations, but it could be because I'm not very social media savvy. That Garfield is amazing, though. Looks better in your style in my humble opinion!

Absolutely loving these! But I also understand somewhat that indifference in other fandoms and mainline franchises. I am someone who emotionally connects to characters and gets pretty attached, so I'm quite different. However, it's really interesting to see your side of things. But I've always loved how abstract and unusual your work is, and your ants are adorable little baby men!!! But I do have a sort of question/ query. That is one, when you're going to draw Hatch? Kind of miss the little blue goober!! Also, two, as you have drawn fanart of mainstream characters, will you ever make any videos like you did with the collaboration with Lavendertowne. We share pretty much the same view of fandoms! Even the stuff I ardently adore I almost never wanna do fanwork for, I have too much stuff I wanna do of my own stories and characters. I had a few years where I did a TON of monster hunter stuff though, haha. Taught me a lot about drawing armor. I still end up drawing a lot of fan stuff though via commissions and kofi supporter sketches

Although I love fan art, I can totally relate to liking a person's original content more. I feel like so much fan art is simply pretty versions of an existing character that often lacks a lot of the heart the original creator put into them, making them feel kinda "flat" in comparison. Original content seems to express deeper meanings than just "cool character in cool pose," most likely because the artist felt inspired by a lot more than just interesting character design to make them. This might be why you love the original works while not being into the fandom side of things; you can feel the passion of the creator emanating from their own original work, but fan art often seems to blanket that passion as if you are experiencing the art second hand. Obviously I'm not trying to shade any specific fan artists here or say all fan art lacks soul or anything, there are absolutely some incredibly passionate fan artists that create art that is just as meaningful as the original creation, just pointing out a trend that I have seen in fan art over the years that I personally don't care much for.

I’m glad you made this video and addressed your point from 7 (wow) years ago. I’ve been watching your channel since back then and I can’t lie it made me think that you looked down on people who had fun drawing fan-art. I will say two points though concerning this. The first being that art of characters someone loves doesn’t always have to be “unoriginal” just because the character is pre-existing. Sometimes the way people do fanart has so much more involved that it’s unfair to say it’s uncreative because they can make up their own facets of a character’s story and flesh them out more or even deviate from what the original creator had planned for them. For example we see a lot of queer coded characters who have no screen time actually having romantic or meaningful moments in their identity having those parts of them explored by fans via fanart. Which brings me to my 2nd point which is when someone finds a character they really love and their story makes them feel seen. Just because a character becomes popular doesn’t mean they weren’t once someone’s original idea. All characters are someone’s original creation technically, so celebrating fan art is still enjoying someone else’s creative expression. If someone makes a character and that character fills you with endless joy, I don’t see why it’s important to make a bunch of new characters who wouldn’t scratch that itch for you anyway since the role is already filled by a pre existing character.

Comment number two to separate my thoughts-- and help with that engagement: I do see your point though. In fact, it amuses me to hear you lament about people making you feel like the odd one out since I'm used to growing up in an environment pre-internet social media where casual enjoyment is the norm. It was very isolating as a child finding out somebody else enjoyed the same show as myself, only for them to be weirded out when I asked questions about why they liked the show. What characters were their favorite? What thoughts did they have while watching? Did they ever imagine the kinds of adventures the characters went on, off camera? Of course I've since learn that everyone enjoys things differently, and that there is nothing wrong with casual entertainment. And finding friends that do like talking and creating 'what ifs' with me helps me feel less isolated and alone. But I do also understand the reverse of creating original content or branching out in a surrealist mood and not receiving engagement from that. It has the impact of going 'oh, maybe this isn't as interesting as I thought it was of a concept' and can make you push ideas to the side from rejection sensitivity.

Many artists start out creating fanart...which is totally ok! And I frequently want to create fanart myself. However, I also have gotten very burnt out from fanart, and I do feel that it can be creatively limiting. I think it is important for artists to use fanart as a fun tool, but also branch out to create original content. Kasey is extremely recognizable because of her style and personality, not just the content she draws. And I respect that! It helps teach a lot of important skills and can be just as rewarding. And who knows, maybe your original creation can get popular enough where people are making fanart of your stuff!

I love fanart and I actively seek out art from fandoms I am passionate about (like Zelda) but I don't enjoy creating fanart myself. I prefer drawing my original characters :)

I relate to this. I've never been part of fandoms and dont reallt care much about fan art. I know it exists and sometimes i loke to someones elses take on a character. I think the biggest block i have with any fanfom stuff is people get emotionally invested and attatched to characters and that makes absolutely no sense to me. I cannot for tbe life of me decouple the idea of a character from the fact it was created by someone to fullfill a narrative role, and so that character can never be emotionally 'real' to me. And to be completely honest i do find it a little uncomfortable/unsettling when other people have very intense emotional reactions to fictional media 🤷‍♂️ but hey people are fullfilled by it and i dont have to understand it.

I use to do a lot of fanart but now I do my own thing. Fanart is just something to doodle and even trying to get into the artists head space when they were designing the character (looking at you SquareEnix since I don't play a lot of games).

Hullo Kasey, I do enjoy your Art and videos and I get so many comments on your pins and I am super happy that I was able to support you in your art journey even in the smallest way! I even have a couple of your prints pined up in my home! Yes I pined them up as I am horrible at framing things and If I want to see something regularly I gotta get it up and a pin or tape is the way I go most often! I did get some art framed this year as my Wife took charge and asked what I truly wanted and she did them! I do have 40+ years of collected artworks it can be hard to choose favorites. I do have museum frames that allow you to switch out flat artworks! BUT you gotta do the work to change it out! Keep this train on the track and making videos Thanks Kasey! I, personally, adore fanart of all kinds. Especially when people reimagine characters as different things than they canonically are. It brings me joy, but I fully understand that some people just aren't into that. That is 100% cool. Also, I love that kermit has one hand with 4 fingers and one with 5.

I enjoyed your refreshing perspective! I draw fan art because my original things aren't sparking anything in me once they're on paper. It doesn't really add fuel to my creative fire the way my Fandom of the Month does. I love Doo Green and Purple. When I hate something and someone else loves something, I go 'Great! That means more for you and no waste!'

my fanart problem i love good fanart but i cannot do it for the life of me. it actually makes me insecure and activates my imposter syndrome when i draw popular cartoon characters in my style hence i stick to my original projects and i only relegate fanart to doodles/cooldown/art block. the other thing about fanart for me is that if i invested significant time into them, i would feel like crap. i realized as a creative, i prefer to make my own bodies of work.

I really don't care for fanart either and I totally understand what you mean!! I do get into fandoms sometimes but I do not make fanart, I tend to place my own OC's into the frameworks of the story, the canon stuff isn't as interesting as stuff I can make myself :3 stuff tailored to me specifically is just better idk!

Interesting to find this out I suppose, a lot of points I understand, for myself, I love consuming fanart and more of the media; not only does it give say younger creatives a chance to come into their own ever changing style. But it also just is more to (love/hate). My take away is, enjoy what you like, fandom* wise but having original characters and art work are just as important!

When u sell art/prints stickers whatever at fairs fan art always goes first and like crazy. Kinda sucks when cool original art gets over shadowed by a nightmare before Xmas sketch tho.

i used to do fanart so much more when i was into more media and now i still do it occasionally, but since alot of my interests have changed, i’ve been doing so much more original concepts and drawings and while i find it more fulfilling, it bothers me how without a pre-existing fanbase it is nearly impossible to get engagement without doing fanart 😭

Casey hyperfixates in other ways. It's fun watching her phases and seeing how her style comes through in all of them. I like watching people enjoy their thing and content loses that if creators force themselves.

Personally, i get really into fandoms, but i never create fanart of... pre-existing characters. Instead, i make OCs for it lol! I love making OCs for fandoms I'm big in, especially games- since games usually leave a lot of space where you can fill in characters.

I just enjoy creating my own worlds a lot... and having a base for designs and story helps

I love seeing fanart, I love fandom and getting really into and excited about things usually the only fan art I make is of my friends' content, for my own drawing I vastly prefer to work with my characters, my ideas, ect the closest I've gotten to fanart of a traditionally published piece of media was food studies after getting into dungeon meshi, I can get hugely excited about a piece of media, without that excitement showing in what I create.

I’ve always been more of a fanartist than an original artist, to be honest. I do make original stuff from time to time(mostly doodling in class that gets out of hand), but it’s always been difficult for me and takes a lot longer. A big part of it is that I enjoy fantasy subjects far more than realistic ones(hard to draw a still life of a creature or object that doesn’t exist), but also have at least some degree of aphantasia. This means I can’t really sketch anything, since the whole “break down your idea into shapes first” doesn’t work when there’s no “visual” aspect that I can break down to begin with. Rather than my starting point being specific, I’d start off with the idea of “I want to draw a dragon” and then everything else gets filled in later. At most I’ll draw a few circles to plot out, say, the location of the head and where the limbs will connect on a dragon, but everything that comes after is improvised; pose, shape, proportions, background when I have the motivation to include one, etc. Step one draw a circle step two add detail pretty much. In contrast, it’s a lot easier to draw designs that already exist because they can appeal to what I enjoy drawing, and I can memorize what’s there and not have to make up everything as I go. I do at least prefer to reference official sources more than fanart, though it makes things a bit harder because 99% of the designs I like drawing are ones that get little attention or aren’t even consistent in official material. My profile picture, for example, is fanart of the Lor Starcutter from the Kirby series, a character that lacks official artwork in poses from the front or back, and is mostly depicted with 3D renders on top of that. I can also draw the Galactic Nova from the same series from memory, though it took a long time to learn(but I’m consistent, unlike official artwork that always leaves out the globe that’s present in every game appearance Nova makes, including the unused error message from the Japanese version of Mass Attack, but I digress…) My point is, fanart is more accessible to me because it takes out one of the bigger stumbling blocks I have to deal with when it comes to creating in general. Given that I get burnt out extremely quickly, ease of creation is a pretty important facet of the conversation for me. It should go without saying that fanart can be a great source of practice for creating original artwork in many respects. If you think about it, redrawing something like, say, official artwork of a Pokémon is going to accomplish many of the same things that drawing a still-life would, provided the artist isn’t outright tracing. It’s not exactly the same, sure, but can still help you practice a lot of things, training things like observation skills, the basics of line stability, or even more complicated stuff like anatomy, perspective, and texture. Skills learned by doing that can then be applied to more complex works, acting as a foundation that’s easier to built than starting from scratch. Art is something that improves with practice, and I don’t see a problem with someone using a method of practice that’s easier for them and also serves as art in its own right, so long as they don’t treat it as wholly original. Also, I’m of the opinion that the argument of “fanart is lazy because it’s just rehashing something that someone already made!” is bullshit. Is the same thing said about paintings of forests and oceans? Of stories about love and loss? Is it lazy to write about surviving a terrifying ordeal because so many others have done so already? One of the greatest things about art is that it serves as an avenue of self-expression, but another is that it serves as a way to express interpretations of others’ expressions! Even if little is contributed, is it truly so bad to restate or emphasize something that resonated with you? Can a piece of music translated to a different genre not evoke entirely new feelings? Is this aspect of my comment unoriginal because it shares the same idea as the classic ‘Two Cakes Theory’? Plus… Sometimes people want to appreciate more of the same, like making the same order at different restaurants. Sometimes they want to see something familiar from an unfamiliar perspective, like looking around at the height of someone shorter or taller and seeing how different the world is. And finally, sometimes a person can just be happy that someone else also appreciated the comparatively complex design of a character that serves more as a mcguffin than a character while bringing about vague but intriguing implications regarding the lore of that world.

As someone who is suuuuper into stuff like fanart, fanfic, all that... I wish I could get into things LESS sometimes! My mind being so very consumed by fandom is sometimes ridiculously stressful! I get so into it and it's like I can't think about anything else. I've always been jealous that people can enjoy media "normally"! I've been like this since I was a kid. Wasn't too interested in a lot of movies and TV unless I was *really* interested in it, at which point I probably watched it 15 times and drew it constantly. The grass is always greener, lol

Im the same way! Theres nothin wrong with enjoying things with passion like this :) Sometimes when my mood is low and i cant get myself to do anything, fandom has been there to get me inspired to draw or write or sing or whatever! This ability to feel passion and excitement can really be a life saver at times. I hope you keep having fun and enjoy the things you love

I think i find joy in fanart because it definitely drove my creativity and interesting making art. Creating scenarios in your own rendition of a show/movie and seeing how people would render them. How the animated style would translate into your own etc Theres a time and place. The thing to worry about is definitely in regards to plagarism and making money off it.

Since I’m ND I hyperfixate on things, so when I’ve absorbed all the official media I can, I move on to fan art. Now since a hyperfixation is when a piece of media kinda takes over ur thoughts I’m going to interact with that media as much as possible. I wouldn’t give this up for anything, but I do think it limits my ability to be original. I’ve only had one hyperfixation that encouraged me to be original and that was because it was on an oc I made 😔

For me, fanart was kind of a gateway into the world of illustration and character design. Taking characters that already exist and reimagining them and/or trying to replicate a style of a show I really loved and create characters in that universe really helped me hone my skills and find my style. I find that as I've grown as an artist I have slowly but surely gravitated out of drawing and consuming fan art.

As someone who draws a hole lot of fanart and who gets absolutely obsessed with fandoms, I can’t understand why people would get so offended over this. Some people don’t really like drawing fanart, that’s that.

I love that one of my elementary students draws and creates prolific fanart because it motivates him and keeps him building his drawing and crafting skills. I also love that he's been using real objects for reference and developing more of a personal style with original characters. I'm not an art teacher and I'm in the position of trying to engage him in academic learning, so we've talked a lot about how everything we learn, see, hear, and do in life can be inspiration for art.

I'd say fanart helps you get better at art, and original art helps you get better at creating. Fanart's easy to learn the basics like anatomy, colors, shading and lighting because the character's already there, you know what to draw, you just have to draw it the best way you can. Original art is when you apply what you've learned and you can have a little fun with it, put your own stamp on there.

Fanart wins because its got a hashtag/searchability. Original art is hard to Find and for some its not easy to understand or relatable. Its sad to see original works get no attention or appreciation but wjth the way the internet and media is structured... Its inevitable :(

It sounds like I'm a lot like you when it comes to fan art.(also the occasional commenter here.) I too just enjoy the fandom but I really don't go head over heals over it. I consume it but usually that is where it ends. I do occasionally draw the fan art but I prefer to draw my original characters I do too.

I got big into undertale when I was a kid and it honestly scared me out of fandoms lol I'll get really into shows and stuff but I don't think I'll ever really join a fandom or make fan art again dfhsf

Oh I mesh with this a lot! Especially when it comes to fan fiction. I like some fan art, but no part of me has any interest in fan fiction!

Fanart is a love letter to other artists and i find that beautiful. What i dont love is fandom. People going crazy over different interpretations and stuff. The amount of hate i see on artists art over such silly headcanons is gross. I remember being so stressed when i used to post publicly and make more fanart. I have such respect for fanartists.

I totally understand, I like design over characters, so if I see a design I like, I buy it, but it makes some people mad because I might not know the character. I just like the design okay 😅

What sucks the most about today’s online landscape is you’re proper alienated if you don’t make fanart, idk about anyone else but my “original” stuff (which i do the most) does so much worse than when i rarely do fanart. Idk that’s my rant of the day

Yes on the seeing the same characters over and over i only watch shows when they’re over like u don’t think i would have liked many of the things i liked if the internet wasn’t quite about it will i was watching so i can get my own enjoyment then creep into the fandom later

But I've been getting into fanart a lot lately, so I've been starting to follow a lot of creators on Instagram. Just yesterday I saw a post of characters I wasn't familiar with yet, and I loved it so much I went the author's page and bought a couple books from her. So from that perspective, as long as the IP is respected and the original creator is on board, I think fanart can work to both creators' advantages.

i used to be massively involved with fandoms and making fanart but as i've gotten older my capacity for anything has forced me out of all my old communities, so i just kind of exist and enjoy from the outside

I have had similar comments with drawing topics I don’t like or heck , just say a popular book isn’t for you and people will swarm you to "make you like it" .. umm no … I read the same book as you did, I just didn’t enjoy it .. let’s move on. Even your “purple controversy” ( lol ) was pointless imo , like why are you going at a certain someone for not liking a color. It’s just a goddamn color 😂 . It ain’t that deep.

As an artist who sells my art, I personally feel weird selling fanart as well. It’s different if it’s a commission. While I am selling fanart because it’s what sells when you’re a small creator and helps get your name noticed. I prefer to sell my own art/characters and such like that. The thing that gets me kinda sad or annoyed I guess are the big creators who are making a living off selling fanart and still are. Instead of branching off into their own projects. It feels like people only follow them for the fandom instead of the actual art
