UPDATE: a lot of people asking about the recent mold/water in my basement. At this point, our insurance is saying this falls under "Home Maintenance"... like replacing a leaking roof and may NOT be covered. We're still working to resolve the issue. THX.

Insurance gets you with mold too - they will only reimburse if the water was the cause of the damage, not the mold. So many loopholes.

It’s me from the future. Don’t forget to insure the house itself . Not only the contents.
Excellent question as I want to start making sure I do my physical games from now on. So loved seeing this and loved hearing how you spoke about the real world worries and concerns.
I'm an insurance agent. Remember people if you do have a collection or "man cave" in your basement and are afraid of floods and/or water sewer backup they are excluded under normal renters or homeowners policies. Water sewer backup can usually be added to a policy for more coverage but floods are covered under a separate flood policy.
@Ytnzy250

Excellent advice, seems almost prophetic as a year later some of his collection was indeed water damaged. Wonder if he took out that separate water policy you mentioned.

I love love love this video. I needed this information so bad, having just moved into a house for the first time in 17 years and completely unknowledgable on where to even begin attempting how to cover all my games. Frankly not as big as yours, but I'm frankly not as old you either. Maybe some day I'll get there but it won't happen if I don't keep what I have so far safe.
Metal Jesus keeps a Drunken Master Paul with a sword in his game room. Beware
Just wanted to say that you are one of the pioneer's in the video game collecting channel world. By your energy and enthusiasm I can tell you do all this for the love of gaming. Thanks for keeping it real fellow gamer!!!
Disaster for me. 2015 I was moving I put my stuff into a storage locker in my city- Kamloops BC - . Which had a gate. and cameras all the important stuff. I got broken into. The operators were on vacation so they didn't know what day this happened. They refused to look at the camera footage. Police - were corrupt and asked me if I had serial numbers on my cd games? WTF! also told me they would not look at the camera footage because how can I prove which cardboard box was mine. Absolute disaster they took hundreds of games, accessories , all my video game figures, and my coin from the NYC nintendo store. I'll never see this stuff again and it would have been safer leaving this stuff in my backyard shed.

I seriously love every single one of your videos, no matter what you talk about.
Hey i love the lighting above your desk behind you!
Another great topic I was pleased to see you cover! I have a fair prototype collection I definitely need to insure.
That's great that you have a backup camera solution. I have seen tons of malfunction on (mostly cheap) DVR for surveillance. Do check them from time to time. And have you tried testing your security, by intentionally triggering stuff? In my working life, I have encountered some situations where the DVR wasn't recording, or had an error and stop after a certain day, so once a year (more or less) would be something I would do if I had cameras installed. Also using it once in a while, so that if (god forbid) something happend, I would be able to get the recording faster without messing something up. Murphy's law is a scary thing man.
Its nice you have that kind of relationship with your neibours, where i used to live in London, not many people have that.. You rarely get more than the odd 'hi'. I have since moved to a smaller town and its night and day. Family next door are super friendly and we talk all the time!
I am new to the insurance industry so this video was very interesting fore me. I knew there was no way they could use scheduled personal property for the game room. Scheduled personal property is for high value single items that need to be insured for a specific amount. For example I just wrote a homeowners policy with SPP for a 28k engagement ring. All homeowners policies come with personal property protection in them, typically our are 50-75% of the homes value but you can increase that to higher limits for a few dollars more a month. My only advice is to talk to your agent and make sure you have good sewer backup coverage. Without it, if the sewer backed up and you had 6 inches of water in your basement your homeowners insurance will NOT cover it. Another piece of advice is get everything off the floor a minimum of 6 inches. If you had to make a claim it will make the claims process easier. Lastly and I hope I am not boring you is have to checked on flood insurance? I have no idea what level of risk you are at but if there was a flood and your gameroom was damaged your homeowners insurance plan will not cover it. Floods are always a specific named exclusion.
Thanks for the video - I already have an extensive cataloging system for my collection and some other security measures, but this game me some ideas to insure my collection separate from our home insurance.
Wow, extremely important to know! I'm definitely contacting my insurance provider and upping mine to cover my collection! You rock!
Very informative video.. Didn't know you could insure a game collection, but this will be useful if my collection is ever as good as yours

Here is a question: In what order do you place your games in your game room? (Games in order from A to Z, favourite game first and least favourite game last etc.) An easy question that can be answered in a few seconds. :).

Alphabetical for sure. The order you display each collection (by system) doesn't matter as much. I can't imagine trying to find a specific game in a large collection that wasn't in alphabetical order.

MetalJesus - A couple good tips here on insurance. There's also another thing I do: besides having a thorough list of my collection, I have just about *"every"* receipt for the games I've bought new over the last 20 years (give or take). I do that for my own piece of mind.

Dude, mjr, you're frekin awesome man! Plain and simple. Just awesome.
Very useful information. I'll probably need insurance in the future too, as I have over 800 games now and are still collecting. Hope it will grow to the size of yours once I'm done studying and have a job.
All that protection, and no case for the iPhone lol love your channel dude
A game collection is a great thing to have. The ability to play so many games at will is simply amazing. The most fantastic thing about your collection in my opinion is : all these things are safe! Your game room is like a museum! The care and love and vision looking forward, and the level of preservation is top notch. You are doing it right Mr. Jesus. Love the channel! I grew up on all those Sierra games, and thank you for contributing to some of the most memorable moments of my gaming past! O7
Been looking for some info on this. In the process of finishing my basement now to build my man cave/game room only got a little over 600 games got to start somewhere. Thanks for the video, good tips!
Love this video so much. Thank you for the usefull info, you gave me alot to think about.
This video is super informative! I'd like to also add that CLZ is an amazing inventory app that also does barcode scanning. It also allows you to select CIB, Cart only, or Cart and instructions only. It uses that, along with current pricecharting data and will give you an estimated value of your collection. This is what I'm using to insure my games. I think the app is $14, but it's well worth it. Peace!
Brilliant video. Very informative 👍🏻
Love the videos, keep up the great work...
Good advice, i'll use that for my own collection! Thanks for the tips! :D
This is a topic that often doesn't get discussed, which I find odd considering the importance of protecting your stuff. Now I'm going to record my ps1, ps2, and xbox 360 collection. Thanks for the tips MetalJesusRocks
Thank you so much for making this!
I'd like to echo what MJ said about a list of games not being enough for insurance purposes. I have a co-worker who used to work as an insurance claims specialist and just having a list on paper of lost/stolen/damaged collectibles was never enough, she told me. I take video a couple of times per year.
Great video, Metal Jesus! Thanks for your insights and knowledge.
Thanks, im going to insure my console repair shop now! Super smart, ima hafto get an agent and figure all this out, going to be a process but totally worth it
Thanks for the badass info. I have a similar situation that requires security, but it might be a bit before I can get cameras lol
When are you doing another vinyl pick up video again?love those. Stay.... METAL!
Good stuff
Very informative and well done clip. Thanks for your advice.
Your dog comment got me thinking about my dog dealing with a robber. She would either get super scared and hide, or go into "hello friend" mode and start trying to give them kisses. She's a little KC Spaniel, and not very smart at that, but wow what I loving dog! lol
Thanks a ton for the video. This is one of my big concerns as my collection gets much larger.
I am a small collector as I am slowly growing a small collection of games, consoles, music CDs, cassette tapes, movie cassettes, vinyls and etc. and unfortunatly, I still don't have enough space in my room to put them all away properly. What sucks is that I lost my Gamecube's connection cables and game CDs too. Once I get a job, i'll save away some money for my growing collection and find ways to put them all away neatly.
I WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND GOT A PAPER CUT!!!!! YOU DIDNT WARN ME ABOUT THAT! ILLEEEGALL! lol awesome video man, i could employ some of this stuff on protecting my lego collection. also, not very cool to rat out your neighbors like that... now that i know they are gone. im going over there now to steal all her potted plants
i know one of the devices is the canary system. the black cylinder on top of the speaker. i have one in my basement also. i love it
This is informative for a game collector and someone who is just getting into home and auto insurance
They should make a new Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise trying to steal your collection
Thanks for the tips... i will take some videos when i get home !!
Metal Jesus: "don't try to fuck with my shit! Also don't forget people have antique gun collections *hint*"
Excellent video, I've been wondering about how to protect my collection
Great advice and great video!
Very good topic. Nice to start a morning off.
Great advise! Personal property insurance is so important! You should be able to bundle it with either home or renters at little to no increase to your premium. Cannot recommend it enough!

How I PROTECT & INSURE my Meme Collection - Metal Jesus
Great video. Very informative.
when we had the flooding in the uk a couple of years ago, and god decided to piss allover my sinclair collection, the insurance agent(loss adjustor) was impressed i had an inventory and videos of my stuff, i also had some receipts, this made claiming way easier, he came took a look at the water damaged stuff, and said there was no problem. i was really impressed by the fact that he did not care about what could be salvaged, they just said total loss and made an offer which i took, he even said salvage what you can with some rare stuff it may be a case of repairing it, you may not find replacements. the main thing is be upfront to start with, it pays dividends if you have to claim.
Lol in the stream of talking about the importance of “security” you literally just told KZread you’re neighbor was on vacation 🤣
Sometimes home insurance only covers "normal" house hold items. I had to insure my pinball collection separately.
I have been wondering about this for the last 2 weeks haha great question!
Great video! This is something that I have always wondered about with you big collectors, and have actually even asked in the comments (though I'm sure you get security questions quite often). As a side question about something you touched on in this video, would you actually attempt to buy our collection back with the insurance payout? I would be tempted to pocket the cash and hang up my collectors gloves at that point. It may be different for you, because you have a successful KZread channel centered around your game collecting lifestyle.
I have the same security system. I don't have it incorporated like you do, with smart home stuff but it is an excellent system.
Make a video of watering your neighbors flowers pls

yes
Insurances aside, you seem like an awesome neighbour for one to have! :)
Fast forward a year and his basement had a leak and he now has $10k worth of repairs to make to his house.
Even if you don't own the place you live, you can get Renters Insurance that will cover your items and they do help you break down certain amounts ($1,000 for Health & Beauty Products / $3,000 for Jewelry / $5,000 for Electronics) but you can also add additional coverage to specific categories (so if you need to have $10,000 Electronic Coverage instead of $5,000 they can bump that up for just that category) and typically Renters Insurance is pretty cheap; basic plans can be as low as $150 per year depending on how much coverage you want.
Metal thanks for the video, I only have about a 1,000 games but I need to make sure I am covered.
Awesome Video!
I don't really have enough games to catalog, but I DO have a couple thousands dvds and blu-rays. I use a program called DVD Profiler to keep track of them all. It shows all kinds of info about the movies and shows as well as HQ shots of the front and back covers. I also keep a text file list of all of my movies and shows, which includes how many discs there are as well as how many titles there are and for what occasion I got the movie or show. I also keep a filmaf.com account which keeps track of my movies...though they don't have every single one...which is a shame.
"Get to know your neighbor...." So simple yet its so true yet we rarely do that.
Great vid and great advice.
Hey MJR, i dont remember what video you mentioned it on, i think it was the one with reggie where you talked about Titanfall 2, THANK YOU FOR THE RECOMMENDATION! I had TF1, I didnt know the second one was on PS4 and also had a actual campaign, im not one for online FPS. It is awesome!
Wow. That game room is much larger than I had always imagined.
Good informative video! My house was was broken into on the 20 th of this past December while I was at work and had thousands of dollars worth of game consoles and games stolen. You may think it may never happen to you and hopefully it don't but you need to be insured, I wasn't so I am out a lot of money and the years I spent collecting all these items.
