Ойындар

This past month, I took and passed the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) Exam, and let me tell you, it was not easy!
I made this video for anyone that is preparing for or considering taking the CKA, This video answers the questions I had along the way, as well as my experience, how I prepared, and tips on how to pass on the first try.
If you have any questions that I didn't cover in the video, please don't hesitate to ask down in the comments!

Hi, there's tons of resources out there, but I'll try to to briefly provide a few that I found useful (in order of price/complexity): 1. (free) kubernetes.io/docs/home/ - I still use the k8s docs every day as a developer, and it should be your starting point if you are not familiar with the Kubernetes API. It has tons of hands on examples to get you started on platforms like KinD and Minikube. 2. (free) training.linuxfoundation.org/training/introduction-to-kubernetes/ - This is an intro to k8s course if you have never worked with it before. It won't give you everything you need to pass the CKA, but it will introduce you to most of the core API groups (pods, containers, services, deployments, replicasets, etc.) 3. (free) github.com/kelseyhightower/kubernetes-the-hard-way - This is a hands-on lab to bootstrap a k8s cluster from scratch. This is not easy, but the skills learned in the lab is critical to passing the CKA Exam. It is a good gauge of whether or not you are ready for the CKA. 4. ($$$) kodekloud.com/courses/certified-kubernetes-administrator-cka/ - Last but not least, this is the CKA course I mentioned in my video. It is a bit expensive, but if you are dedicated, you can move through the course very quickly and only pay for 1-2 months of the subscription. KodeKloud also has mock exams that you can take advantage of. Hopefully this was helpful - there are different resources depending on what your current skill level is with k8s so please let me know if you have anything specific in mind, cheers!

Congrats Steven, for obtaining CKA cert. I am just about to begin my studies. Could you please elaborate, what this killer shell is and how to access it, etc ? Thanks in advance.

Hi Sachin, thank you and welcome to the channel! Best of luck in your studies, I'm happy to answer any questions you have along the way. The Killer Shell I was referring to is this: killer.sh, and like I mentioned, it comes included for free when you sign up for the CKA Exam. If you want to practice the killer shell before committing to the full price of the CKA Exam, you can buy 2 sessions for $30 here: killer.sh/order/checkout.

Hi Steven thanks for the video. I had a question regarding exam scheduling. Can you schedule the exam anytime you want or like lets say if I bought it today can I schedule it in 3 months? and also for the retake ?

  • @StevenShapiro

Yes you can schedule the exam any time you want within 1 year, but you also must take the retake within the same year window. Full details are here docs.linuxfoundation.org/tc-docs/certification/lf-handbook2/scheduling-or-rescheduling-an-exam , glad to help!

@StevenShapiro Hello , I am a final year post graduate student in my final semester , beginner in kubernetes having 6months of experience. But now I am currently looking for a job in DevOps , Cloud Native , SRE Domains and hence looking for doing a certification . Which certification would you suggest KCNA or CKA as for which would maximize my chances of getting job in the above mentioned domains. Note - I have 2-3 months for preparation and can devote 1 hr on daily basis . Would this suffice for cka ? Would love your insights and reason behind your choices on this. I am really confused 😅!!!

Hello , Steven can you tell me whether should I give kcna or directly move to cka ? Also is kcna recognised by the recruiters worldwide?

  • @StevenShapiro

@@shubhamchaudhari6829 Hi, sorry for the late reply! If I'm being honest, I had never heard of the KCNA before you brought it up, so I'm not sure if recruiters recognize it. To maximize getting a job, I would definitely recommend the CKA. If you are unsure if you are ready for the CKA, you can always start with the CKAD which is an easier subset of the topics covered on the CKA. Also, you're selling yourself short calling yourself a beginner with 6 months of experience - after you spend your 2-3 months preparing, I would try out the killer.sh practice exam and gauge how you do. If you are able to get ~30% right on your first practice attempt, I think you have the foundation to continue preparing and pass the CKA!

I see that you get a grade for your success in the exam - is the grade on top of the certificate or is it only for your own knowlage? One more thing I feel like the CKA is indeed pretty impressive inside the resume - after completing it - what other exams do you think would help my/your career as a devops engineer? Thought about completing AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional and maybe GitLab Certified CI/CD Associate... What do you think Thank you so much!!

  • @StevenShapiro

Hi sorry for the late reply! The grade is only for your own knowledge (to gauge your proficiency more than just a pass/fail). From others I've talked to, the CKA definitely feels like the most valuable and recognizable certification. I've heard good things about the AWS courses, especially given how widely used AWS is in the software industry. My company currently uses AWS and I plan on pursuing more certifications in it. Hope this helps, thanks for the question!

Hi, I forget the exact exam topics, but it was reflective of the domains explained here: training.linuxfoundation.org/certification/certified-kubernetes-administrator-cka/ At a high level, these are the areas/skills I would encourage you to focus on: - navigating a terminal shell + using vim + using grep to filter output - using kubectl + knowing the api resources + working with yaml and jsonpath - run a pod + mount a pv via pvc + schedule podAntiAffinity - schedule and drain nodes + upgrade etcd/k8s - create deployments + assign service accounts - ssh onto nodes + restart kubelet/processes + etcd backup - create and apply secrets

If I do killersh exams , the real exam contains similar difficulty level or a less difficult as compared to the killersh exams?

  • @StevenShapiro

Yes, killer.sh claims to include questions that are “as hard or harder” than the real exam. I think it is a very good indicator of your preparedness for the real exam!

I work in the cloud space and learning DevOps in the current job. However I am a high level architect and my current job does not need hands on commands. Is it even possible for me to think of preparing for this exam Steven ? I am overwhelmed seeing folks say it’s a difficult exam.

  • @StevenShapiro

    @StevenShapiro

Hi Subhashini, my answer would be yes, it's absolutely possible! I won't pretend that it will be easy, but a foundation of cloud architecture and how each resource interacts with one another is a big conceptual milestone that you already have under your belt. The hands-on component is a direct function of practice in my opinion, and I think a CKA specific course would teach you how to navigate your way around the "kubectl" CLI. Additionally, the Killer Shell sessions are a very accurate gauge of readiness, so you can always purchase an individual session for $30 before being certain you want to commit to the full exam.

I’m sorry!! 🥲 If I can give any advice with less than a week to prepare, it would be: - Focus on the “easier” questions, specifically getting partial credit on questions even if you aren’t able to fully answer them - Practice time management and make sure you at least make an attempt at every question - Don’t stress yourself out! Most people don’t pass on their first attempt, so just do your best and don’t put too much pressure on yourself ❤ Good luck!!!
