How I Overcame the Motivation Trap (it's not willpower)

🌲 Build a bulletproof learning system ➔ www.cajunkoi.com/landings/stu...
I always wondered why I couldn't stay motivated over long periods. Even if I start off the school year studying 10+ hours day, I always ended up burning out. But after learning more about psychology, I discovered self-determination theory, a framework by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan that can explain why we can never stay motivated. And after reflecting on it and implementing it into my life, I unlocked limitless motivation.
🙏 Thanks for watching!

One method is changing your thinking from " I have to do this" to "I get to do this!". Another would be falling in love with the process of learning something by introducing variety into it, and also understanding and wondering why and how you could apply the information to the real world. Be curious! As they taught us as children, ask why and how and when!

I remember when i first heard of intrinsic motivation as a sad and depressed 12th grader, i'm in the second year of my college and though it was a very slow process this mindset has really impacted my mental health and work positively ! So do not be scared to get on this journey and believe in yourself , you can do it and you will

I actually read this book called way of the superior man by David Deida and its about finding purpose in life, I think I water fasted and meditated for 2 days before finding it and whenever I think about it I find motivation coming easy and erupting and flowing like great rivers. Another thing that many might want to consider is if it lines up with said purpose, and if it does it really feels amazing.

How can I go from "feeling" that I "have" to study to I "choose" to study? I had (unknowingly) developed intrinsic motivation 3 years back, and suddenly lost it a year ago. My main problem (now) is that I don't enjoy studying a lot and feel like I "have" to study, which wasn't the case back then. I loved to study and know more than what's is the syllabus, and I totally relate with you when you say that intrinsic motivation arises from the love you have for the activity. I tried to say to myself that I "choose" to study but internally I always feel that I "have" to study and ultimately this technique of building intrinsic motivation doesn't work. I am and have always been a good student (one of the topmost of my batch) (so no problem with competency), have many like-minded friends (no problem with relatedness), and as such nobody forces me to study and I do it on my own (so no problem with autonomy as far as I can see, yet I feel like I am forced to study).

For my bros that study hard and don’t get the grades they want/feel they deserve , hang in there. It hurts, I know. Believe me. But in the end, the life lessons about trying and putting your hard work into something is more valuable than not studying and getting As. The struggle is real now, but in the future you will be more self-determined than those around you because of that tough training you had for it in school. You will be able to have more discipline, understand certain things about yourself and the world (like you can’t always wait until tomorrow to do things,) and in the end just have this confident air about you. Grades is only a VERY small portion of the work you put into a class. The things you learn from the class are in the end, much more valuable than the letter grade. Of course, grades DO have an impact on your future but what I’m saying is that YOUR OWN being, your own person, will stay with you for the rest of your life and in 65 years you won’t remember what grade you got in what specific class, but hopefully what you learned from it and how it changed your perspective of the world. If you love getting enamored by your schoolwork you are in a good position in school.

Also, try to only compare your progress with YOURSELF. One day someone might get the lesson and you won’t, don’t get mad. Another you might completely understand something and they will feel lost, don’t throw a party. Everyone is different. Just stay on your own course and avoid glancing away from the road or you might crash :( And staying on your own track will help as you will not crash into any other people if you switch tracks or worry about where your friend’s track is going more than your own. Long-winded analogy BAHAHAH

Actually the world we are living in is based on comparison, we are hired just if we are BETTER than other participating candidates. So, "don't compare yourself" tip actually is not meaningful, if you are worse than most of your friends and you are in an average university and studying engineering(gave this example because this is what I do right now), you possibly gonna be homeless in the future or underpaid at the best. So, not comparing ourselves to other people is meaningless I think. About first tip, the mindset tip, If you "need" motivation to start doing something it is not something you "choose" to do but you "have to" do, have you ever needed motivation to play video games, watch tv or eat junk food? Possibly no. Because, that are the things you wanted to do, you "chose" to do so the first tip is just kidding with yourself I think.
