Modifying a camera to full spectrum can be expensive, So If you don't have a camera you want to modify or just don't have the budget for it, I created the Infrared Lut, that can recreate the look of the IR chrome filter on any video footage and even on photos. Get it Here :www.mathieustern.com/luts/infrared

I've shot infrared on film with some really nice wood effect results. I tried a couple of rolls of Ektachrome Infrared years ago. They were amusing with plants rendering as fuchsia. Just for fun I put an IR filter on one of my digital cameras and exposed until I got an image. Deep red (as expected), hints of wood effect. I bought a cheap old DSLR and attempted to remove the IR filter myself. The camera never worked again...

I put an IR filter in front of my Leica M10 Monochrome....and got some VERY interesting results. I guess removing the bayer sensor allows a bit more light in and somehow the camera is a bit more IR sensitive....pretty fun stuff!!

Hi Mathieu, great video again! Try to find a second hand B+W 403 filter or something similar from Hoya, or one of those Chinese UV-pass-filters , this totally blocks the visible part of the spectrum! but lets IR and UV through. With a white balance click on the foliage you'll obtain a normal blue sky with a white, or a bit yellowish vegetation and a black and white houses, rocks. Flowers could show surprising details. Especially Dents the Lion, or sunflowers. If you want to show invisible stuff that insects (bee-vision) and some birds of prey can detect a bit into the UV than utilize old Trioplans, those Old single coated East German Meritar 50mm f2.8, Wollensack et cetera or the Tessars. Some Russian lenses work great to, even the Helios 44m, Nikkor E series, AF-D 50mm f1.8 . You can shield of IR by adding some filters I use BG40 -old light blue filter for black and white photography. I expirimented since 2006 with a modified Nikon D200 and now with the Z6. But the D200 is better since it has no PDAF and no sensorlenses that block parts of the spectrum.

Would you want to go even deeper into the infrared? longer wavelength. Like 1.3-3.8μm where the world turns from reflective to emissive. Shortwave infrared filters are rare and used for food inspection and some limited forensic use. Beyond that you will need cooled midwave infrared cameras. There are various different detector types and materials, but all of them require to be cooled with a stirling cryo cooler, so it's prohibitively expensive to see the 2.5-6μm spectrum of light. Beyond that uncooled microbolometers work for the 7.5-14μm spectrum and using Germanium lenses give you a window to the thermal infrared that is purely emissive. Turning living humans into sources of light, leaving behind glowing finger and footprints.

My personal favorite filter for my modified camera has been 850nm and more into the infrared. I've tried using filters within $32. Most of them have worked for me. It's possible to use a full spectrum camera, along with hot mirror and IR filter, in order to obtain identical images to later stack into various combinations. For example, it is possible using such technique for obtaining images resembling a Hoya R72, Red filter, blue filter, IR Chrome, etc. Every technique can have its own benefits and disadvantages, but in my opinion, at least worth a try.
