I was so waiting for this!!! When I saw your original video from the new church. I was stoked that you were using logic. I’ve taken the worship mix and master course but abelton is just not as easy as logic is for me!!!! Hoping you guys add this to that course for in depth course

Great information, thanks for posting this video. Another good idea that I was taught years ago with Logic is to place a Gain control at the top of each channel to adjust loud signals and have the option to switch the phase as well. 🙂🇨🇦

Because I'm using Logic for a while, I recommend you switch the folder stacks to summing stacks. Summing stacks gives you all the benefits of a channel track (parallel comp and more). Also, you can minimize your tracks in folders like folder stacks. Very nice job by the way.

Great video! You can use an eq to define your toms, and use a gate/expander to lower the spills and then trigger. You can even use the mix know (Trigger2 ) to blend the wet and dry signal. Otherwise you hear for ex tom triggering every snare hit

I’m considering using Trigger 2 free to replace our kick and snare only. I’m totally happy with our toms. How does Trigger 2 account for cross stick, or does it not? I don’t want it triggering the snare when it’s a soft section of a slow song, lol.

Tip: what i find works well for drumset is breaking up your drum groups. Like have a buss for your kick and snare, a buss for your toms, and a buss the things made of metal (cymbals). Each of those busses get some compression and those are routed to a main drum buss with light compression. Then you can send that to a parellel drum crush buss.

You like the CLA-2A for parallel drum compression more than the CLA-76? I've always used the 76 but I'm down to try stuff. Also, just started using Logic for our online mix too. Probably biggest difference for us is that I'm using it post fader off our LV1 so that I don't need an extra person or space to mix broadcast. I just tweak our template just enough that it sounds a little more produced for online and then how it's mixed in house translates to online.

Just a note for organization and simplifying your track count: Your L and R tracks (like keys and multitracks) can be combined into a stereo track. Just make sure your L track is on an odd input number, click the little circle symbol on the track input button, then select your channel pair (eg Input 7-8) and voila, one less channel and no need to pan left and right :)

@@specopbookie like most things, it depends on what you are doing with your channels. I just know that if I put a volunteer in charge of mixing in logic pro, it's easier to understand and control when a stereo instrument is on one single channel. If there is a case where the L and R signals aren't balanced, I can make adjustments with the stock gain plugin, it has a separate knobs for L and R

Hey! Thanks for this video - and all of the other videos you make to help us improve the worship experience for our churches. I recently shifted to using logic to mix our stream. Current setup: X32 > Logic (Apollo Twin) > ATEM Mini Pro > ProPresenter > Restream > Facebook/KZread. I said all of that to ask you if you have any thoughts on latency or video/audio sync issues. The video is coming in SEVERAL frames before the audio. I’ve been scouring KZread for tips on how to fix this! Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tracy

You should use another reverb for vocals. I mean, a reverb that allows you to do a side chain to the vocals, to get better clarity… but it’s a pretty good job anyways, and you can use a bus to send the snare and then apply the Trigger 2

Since phone speakers don’t reflect low frequencies too well its a good idea to add a bus send for the bass with some clean distortion on it. Just route the output of the bus to the rest of the band. I implemented this and it works phenomenally. The base is still clean but you can hear it clearly on the phone making the mix sound fuller even on phone speakers.

Waves Tune Real-Time does not introduce latency. Additionally, Logic automatically compensates for latency of busses. If latency is introduced on input tracks, one needs to compensate on all tracks, as far as I know. At least that's how we do it, and we inherited that from the bethel template for Logic.

typically video will naturally be delayed more than the audio. at least in my experience, i have never had to delay video to match the audio, however i have had to delay the audio to match video. which can be done with a plugin, set at the root of each channel strip (better to do this at the begginning of each channel strip, rather than once at the end of the channel strip if you are mixing broadcast so that: a) the audio will sync up with what you are seeing on screen in the media room, which actually does help give context to the mix. b) most importantly, putting the delay at the begginning of each channel strip allows you to hear the changes made to your mix in real time.(if you put one single delay on the master output, you wouldn't hear the changes in your mix until after they were processed by the delay).

You could also set it up so each channel goes into the daw for processing, then back out to the desk channels for fader control. All the bussing would likely need to remain in the desk, however. Alternatively, some desks also work as a DAW controller, so there may be a way to assign the desk faders to control DAW faders, rather than the actual desk inputs.

That way we can process our in ears completely separate from everywhere else, only downside being that the "true gain" is now controlled by our x32 rack and not the FOH board. It's been a more budget friendly way of achieving the multiple goals we were shooting for when we moved in to the building. We aren't using the Slate triggers in the room, but we are using a whole bunch of waves plugins on each drum channel at FOH on soundgrid. I don't believe Slate is currently able to run off of the SuperRack interface/server for FOH- only waves plugins work within SuperRack, as far as I'm aware. Our audio is straight from the preamps going to FOH and separately to our Broadcast, so we have totally different plugin chains for each channel and each destination.

Ya i used to have that issue. Not really sure how i fixed it. I upgraded to an M1 and it works fine with my Dante latency all the way down. One thing to check is to make sure your prodject sample rate is set correctly. If you are using an interface, match its sample rate or dantes or whatever

We are currently using Logic for our broadcast mix, but I want to move away from it, as it has some annoying limitations and behaviors when it comes to broadcast mixing. I‘m thinking about moving to Reaper or Studio One.

@@robertsimpson5801 It's mostly a problem with the learning curve for volunteers. Logic has a very rigid UI which is far away from a mixing console. Reaper and Studio One have the ability to get closer to a digital mixer. Reaper has the ability to create custom themes/skins extensions, and plug-ins (I'm a software engineer), but that would take quite some time to set up, which I currently do not have. Studio One can show small widgets in the channel strip for gain/EQ/compressor/... and also offers a solo bus, which makes it possible to solo tracks during broadcast (this can be done using busses in the other DAWs, but is not intuitive - I think Ableton can do this as well). Both DAWs also have their downsides, which makes me stick with Logic for now. Reaper does not really offer an "input monitoring" feature, one needs to record arm the tracks. This means Reaper would always record all tracks, which is not what I want (it is possible to disable recording for an armed track, but that is hidden away and is just plain stupid IMHO). Studio One's UI is somewhat complicated in certain cases and we would have to buy the largest licence for all the features we want, and I do not want to spend that much on another DAW. Logic also sometimes has "hick-ups" on my system, where it will stop its audio engine because "a plug-in has reported a stability problem" and asks whether it should quit or continue, instead of just continuing... However this has only been a problem on my personal system when using more third-party plug-ins than usual. Our broadcast Mac Mini has been stable enough so far, using mainly stock plug-ins, Antares AutoTune, and some Waves stuff.

You don't need expensive mics for a good sounding broadcast mix. You may just need to do some more processing to get it to sound similar.

As a drummer and a sound guy, I have mixed feelings about drum replacement (sample triggers). I feel like most of the time the sound you wanted could have been achieved with EQ and compression.

I have to agree. When I mix recordings of our band the only time I replace a shell is if there is something really off. Even then I try to just augment the shell with a replacement. Controlling the microdynamics on drums is critical to get the impact and energy of the kit. Without it, yeah they sound like they need replaced.

We use Reason because it's what the last guy used who set-up the system. I'm not a fan simply because no one has had a chance to "learn" it. We basically mix it make it sound ... not gross.

I’ve also had problems with Taylor acoustics sounding bad. I know the brand has a great reputation, but they seem to be so thin and just bad sounding. A caveat is that it’s usually 200/300 series that I’m mixing. I’d hope the upper series are better.

  • @BlakeLeBlanc

We do! Just need to add a delay plug-in to each channel. Figure out which one causes the most delay. Leave that delay plug-in set to 0. Then with a good bit of math you can calculate how much delay each other channel needs to line up with the most latent channel. We did this and overall have about 20-30ms overall delay. We adjust the video in OBS, to be delayed to match the audio. Logic does have automatics delay compensation but only works during playback mode not input monitoring while recording. Hope this helps!

I’d love to see how you troubleshoot latency between video and audio. I manage live stream at our house of worship and we are wanting to implement pro tools for our stream mix. The problem we have run into is our video is hitting before our audio. We’ve tried reducing buffer size as well as introducing a delayed into the mix but to no avail we can’t get synced up. Any ideas would helpful. I’m completely stumped. Thanks for the content.

Try running everything through with no processing and see what kind of latency you're getting. If it's more than your lip-sync delay, you'll either have to delay the video or use a non-USB method to grab the audio. This is assuming your computer isn't slow or poorly configured.
