drawing one person alike is one thing, but replicating the persons face multiple times in the same canvas is mind blowing

Somehow you have drawn the portrait in a simple way. For beginners like me, the subject of portrait painting is very difficult. I have also consulted your course, I think I will join in the nearest day.

I listened to another artist who also pointed out that the details are not what gives the likeness ( hence you can recognise your brother/father in one of those old army photos where the face is really just dark blobs where the eyes and mouth are). As you say it's about drawing an accurate outline and placing features in the correct places.

This information is solid. It is actually what I found myself doing back in 2020. I was watching many videos trying to find a starting point. Then settled with this YT channel. I even watched some Patreon tutorials. When I was recording myself digital paint, I could go back and see where it started to flop or when I made a breakthrough. It helped me analyze my skills and see what worked and what didn't work. If you can, I'd recommend you record yourself in 720p at least. You'll be able to sit back and say "ok that's where I broke through/flopped" so you know when you get to that point to be aware.

Same. As a crosshatcher, no matter how well I shaded the face it would never make it look more lifelike

What I find interesting is your tecnique of painting dark to light! I've learn to paint light to dark .🙂

1:30 for the middle one.. I knew immediately, didn't know why I knew, even after going back and watching you start again. Just the shape of the head, the angle of the brow, and hairline were enough. Crazy!

1:30 for Leo; all I needed was the eyebrow angels and relationship to eyes, but the forehead proportions confirmed my guess. 2:50 for Daniel, actually right when you cut back in with your edit, I recognized the hairline to nose tip, but I had the advantage of having just watched "Our Friends in the North" a few days ago. It is a 90's miniseries which took the characters from their teens to their 50's.. it was really interesting to watch the aging process and observe the changes that made the characters stop looking like themselves. So, I think it is important to start from a photo that represents the most iconic characteristics of a famous person. I really had to look at the side-by-side before my brain clicked into Michael's identity. His smile would have been unmistakable. A more animated expression would have helped me. And a static posture tricked me away from the idea of Michael in motion that is etched in my idea about him. 'Once played a game where we had to guess celebrities just by one feature, just eyes, just nose, just ears, etc. Everyone recognized Paul Newman's eyes because the photo showed his side-glancing twinkle with his iconic crows feet. Actors invest more of their brand into appearance and visual publicity than achievement based celebrities and, for me, that affects my speed of recognizing someone. Lee Remick told a story of walking down a street with Marilyn Monroe noting how people were not bothering them. Marilyn looked at Lee and said, "Just watch, I am going to be that girl." She changed her posture, her movement, the tension in her muscles and her expression and people instantly flocked around them. Lee said she gained a whole new respect to Marilyn 's acting skills that day.

I knew from the second I looked at the thumbnail so I can't REALLY tell you when I started to know from you painting because subconsciously I already knew haha.

1:00 - Michael Jordan (I've always had trouble with dark faces. I couldn't even guess it was him until you put down the light reflection on his lip.) 1:43 - Leonardo DeCaprio (I jumped to him at 1:29 because of the forehead, but I wasn't sure until 1:43) 2:52 - Daniel Craig (He has very distinctive curves and angles about the nose, eyes and forehead.)

Interestingly, I got Leo right when he first appeared. I think it might be that hairline combined with the eyeline and shape of the chin/jaw. Is that a common photo of him maybe? But, Craig I didn't get until you were finished at the very end.

He is, thanks so much for this specific video tips and demo. Portrait is a very challenging subject but with patience and observation the outcome will be good. I use the proportional divider for drawing and it is a great tool. I had an instructor that encourages to tracing when painting portraits. What are your thoughts about tracing? What about an underpainting? I need to watch this video again and get the most of it. I truly appreciate your videos and passing along what helps you when painting a portrait. 0:49 MJ, 2:32 Leon, 3:18 Daniel. I think the subject can affect likeness to - I painted Groucho Marx and it's pretty hard to not look like him as long as I put that big mustache in. By comparison, Paul McCartney was a lot harder - I think his face lacks a distinctive feature.

Ok, no joke. Might be because I have had a crush on Leo since I was 9 and he played in the Titanic, but I knew it was him from the outline at 1:31.. lol Too bad I'm too old for him now...

I find that turning the music down low and watching talent in action is as therapeutic as a meditation session.

One part of photorealism is all about becoming an expert at spot the difference. Comparing everything from colours, values, proportions, shapes etc - all of the different elements that go to create the whole painting, or the "gestalt".

I did not know the person but it is very easy to see how accurate you are with the outlines and in a way I think that the outlines can be enough if it is a person you know well and then it was very interesting to see the way you place the eye brows/eyes and the mouth - very observing, very accurate very defining brushstrokes. 🎶🌷🎵🙏

For a while now, I had the idea to do an experiment with family members where I see how little I could draw of them before they could recognize who it was. My hypothesis (I'm a research scientist. So I can use that word...😆) was that they would be able to recognize who was who from the initial placement of marks for where the facial features are located. I don't think there needs to be any value or anything. My hypothesis stems from how...or at least how I understand...facial recognition to work, which is from measuring the mathematical distance of and between features of the face. I think those are pretty constant. Think of when you see images of people through their lives. You have no problem recognizing your grandfather when he was 30 years old versus when he is 80, even though you never saw him at 30! The smoothness of the skin doesn't confuse you. Weight gain or loss doesn't confuse you. The different hairstyles don't confuse you. Even facial hair, or not, doesn't confuse you. You can still recognize them. I really believe it's our minds' ability to recognize the placement a d distance between facial features that provides that recognition. Case in point...and a long story short...I identified my biological father about a year ago. He passed away 10 years ago, which stinks, but all is well. I'm building healthy relationships with my new siblings, and it's great. However, along the way, I realized that growing up, I had actually met my grandmother a few times when I was younger. When I found my family, they showed me pictures of him and his parents and siblings, of course. I immediately recognized his mom, my grandmother, as the lady that would visit a friend of my mom's...even when they were pictures of her at different stages of her life. Of course, my hypothesis could be incorrect, but that's how science works...🤷‍♂️

I've often heard it said that it's the eyes that make a likeness, but DiCaprio and Craig were instantly identifiable because of their distinctive hairstyles.

Hi Chris, thank you so much for these videos. I've learned a lot from them. I was wondering: could you maybe do a video on the role of the background in portraits and still lifes? Sometimes I have a reference photo that I find interesting to paint, but the background in it is too messy or perhaps uninteresting. How do you pick a background (color) that brings out the subject best without disregarding the effect of the original background and its reflected light?

Really interesting to see how early on you can indeed already see, and what really makes it click. Shape of the face, the hairline, etc. Definitely a good take away to start focusing on the shapes of the face way more than the details of the features. I tested it with my fiancee, he spotted them even sooner. Our times: 0:55 / 1:09, 1:34 / 1:55 and at 2:55 / 3:09
