Thanks for this video, this is an awesome idea. I have attempted to delve into the world of licensing but never thought about creative market before. Love your work by the way and stoked to have stumbled across your YT ! (And hi from a fellow Aussie living in the French Alps)

Love your art style. Must be so frustrating seeing your work be resold by others. I’m just a hobby artist (and an Aussie, always good to see more local talent) but the idea of trying to make a living from your art, just to see others profit from it, is one thing that prevents me considering going down that track.

Hello fellow Aussie! 💗 For sure, I think it takes a certain dis-investment or detachment to turn creativity into commercial work… creativity for its own sake is always so much more delicious! (You’re never ‘just a hobby artist’ 💗 all artists are artists!). And the same goes for sharing artwork online, it’s sort of a given that it might take on a life of its own.

Thank you! There’s definitely some pros and cons to it… but I think if you can let the work go (not be too attached to it), it’s a pretty cool way to get a little freedom. The time = money equation is hard with commercial creativity.

This was so helpful! I have considered art licensing many times over the years.. I guess when my mind gets too focused on making things to market or the idea of pitching myself, all the fun and motivation goes out the window. Thank you! I still find it really overwhelming when I think about making art for licensing… it’s different to commercial work because there’s infinite possibilities 😲 and so much to do, which makes it so hard to begin! Working to someone else’s brief is easier in a lot of ways!

I don't think those sketches are appalling 😆 My initial ones are almost exactly like that too hah. Your process of vectorizing sounds very similar to mine. I often spend too much time blocking out the colors 😆 For some reason I'm good about organizing and naming my layers in photoshop but not illustrator

Haha oh I’m glad I’m not the only one with the sketches! And we must have similar brain processes, because I can keep track of my Photoshop layers way better than Illustrator… but I think that’s because I learnt Photoshop first, so it always feels a bit more natural. It’s so fascinating how Adobe programs have all these different ways to achieve similar ends, and everyone has their own lil’ method.

Yes, it does have its trade offs… I hesitated on it for a while because you kinda have to let go of the work you’re selling. But it’s been helpful, especially after having kids when it’s hard to find lots of time to work on custom illustration jobs. 💗

Thank you. I wonder if the final art has to be in vectors always? I usually work in bitmap images as a final art.

Would u say u transfer a majority of your work into vectors? Have u tried using the vector brush on Fresco? Also would love a vid on how u like to use Procreate, fav brushes, feat. color palettes, etc! I actually really appreciate how u showed ur rough sketches, I always get paranoid thinking they should look cleaner but u verified that it really doesn’t matter and we all have our own process❤

For commercial work I always like to create a vector version in case the client needs that capability, but I just wayyyy prefer the detail of raster (because I use image trace in Illustrator to vectorise and it drops a bit of detail). I probably should learn another way to do it, like start in vector from the get-go… maybe the vector brush in Fresco would be the way? I haven’t tried it yet. But for personal work and stuff I’m making into prints or stickers I don’t vectorise, just use hi res jpeg. And I know the feeling! I always freak out when I see some of my favourite artists draw straight into a sketch without any composition lines underneath… like maybe I just don’t know how to draw 😂 but for sure, we all have our unique way and that’s what makes things different and special!

How do you choose what size to make your art boards in illustrator?

I try to make them a decent size (A4-A3), so any exported .png or .jpeg files have a bit of size for print. But because they’re vectorised images, it shouldn’t really matter, the images can be scaled up or down with no pixelation. I think the more important sizing choice might be the canvas size in Procreate, where I try to go as big as possible while still being able to have a few layers (around 10) to separate colours. Hi Rachel, what does it mean that your art has been on Apparel? Does that mean you license out your art? How do you negotiate how much you should get paid for licensing out your art? Thank you for any advice

Hey Laura! Yep, my art has been on apparel (my main source of income is drawing T-shirt graphics, but that’s a bit different to what I’m talking about in this video - the shirt graphics are usually custom designs that are created for the client’s exclusive use, and often are sold as full rights to them which isn’t the ideal agreement on my end but I figure I’m not going to use someone else’s brand’s graphics so it doesn’t really matter to me). I’m still pretty terrible with my pricing, I’m usually guided by what I’ve earned in the past/what I’m offered, or by past experiences when I’ve worked on a project and felt like it hasn’t been worth it 😅 Ummm anyway the bottom line is I usually work on client commissions which is a bit different to licensing. If I’m selling graphics through Creative Market or similar (like what I’m talking about in this vid) I’ll align my pricing with what’s already available. If I’m licensing something exclusively - it depends on the size/distribution/use - but I try to quote somewhere between what I would quote for open license (eg Creative Market product) and exclusive use custom commission. So some rough examples: An open-license Creative Market suite with commercial use license is around $45-$75, exclusive licensing for an existing graphic that isn’t custom around $200-$300 and custom exclusive graphic $1000. And I have no idea if that’s good intel - I still find it so hard to price work!
