How I make DAILY ART PRACTICE more exciting🦋 sketch with me

I'm not Painting finished "masterpieces" every day! Most of my Art Practice as a working Artist consists of Sketching, observing the world around me, and trying to improve my Drawing skills. In this Art Vlog I want to show you my daily art practice and how I make sketching more engaging. I find painting more exciting, so forcing myself to sit down and practice my drawing skills is not always fun. But I recently discovered new kinds of mark making to draw with more expression and creativity. Learning how to use line quality to indicate tone of voice and emotion really helped me find joy in sketching again. I'll be sketching plants in my art studio, studying flowers at a botanical garden, going on a picnic, and doing more flower drawings at night! It's a very busy day and I'm excited you're joining me ❤️

I like to practise my watercolour with my own oracle cards. So many surprising things have appeared and I do this every morning only takes around 15 mins as I have everything already set up and its great practise on little watercolour postcards you can make your own with watercolour paper. Soon you will have a set of your own art oracle cards. The previous card that I paint I keep on my Art shelf so that when I walk in it also inspires me to do another card and this practise has worked really well for me.

sketching for painters is in essence an ends to a means. A sketch lays the ground work for so many things in a painting but i wont list them to keep it short and not my usual book. Ashleigh at least you found a way to make sketching enjoyable and not feeling like a task. You know all the reasons why a sketch should be done before you jump into a painting. You can make it as detailed or as abstract as you like as well. From experience , the better your drawings the better your paintings will be. One uses different shades of dark and light other is differsnt shades of color. Keep drawing , keep painting, both will improve. You already inspire.

I paused the video at 5:32 to answer your question about whether we choose to share our sketches or not, and why. Over the past seven years, my family has experienced a slough of unexpected events that left us reeling and finds us healing, even still. Some of what’s happened has led to dramatic life shifts, relocation, and other upheavals. Going through all of that, and learning to adjust to life as it now is, has led me to step away from my other work, and focus full time on building a creative career, here on KZread - to share my art journey, my health journey, my entrepreneurial journey, and whatever else I can share that will be useful and inspires others. I believe that there are endless opportunities to help others around the world through the KZread platform. I found your channel while watching Kelsey Rodriguez, who mentioned something nice about your channel - I don’t recall exactly what she said, but it was enough to get me to seek you out. I find that your videos soothe my sometimes ruffled feathers, helping me to feel calm, relaxed, inspired, and hopeful. This video, in particular, is also helpful to me in an artistic sense. As a beginner, I do not yet know the techniques you display as you work, and some of your tools and supplies were completely unfamiliar to me, prior to your demonstration of them (on your other videos as well). Dreamy and educational at the same time… a lovely way to spend part of one of my 24 hours today… thank you! I’d mentioned this video being particularly helpful to me, artistically. That’s because, just yesterday, I was trying to sketch the chaotic tangle of greenery - two plants in my back yard - without success. Your sketch of the greenery is one I’d put on my wall. You showed me some techniques that I have not tried yet, which I will now practice. I’ve also been interested in improving portraiture and skin tones, and some of your videos really help a lot with that, so thank you again, for showing your process, your palette, as well as your progress. As for my own sketches, and whether I I’d share them, and why: Yes, I am already working on a video that will show my sketches. As a beginner, there’s not yet much to see, in terms of drawing or painting, but I also write, film, and do other creative projects, so I’ll be showing those as well. I used to believe that I needed to be really good at something before I could share it. Some of my favorite KZreadrs have perfectly-polished videos that are truly works of art in their own right - yours rank right near the top of my list in that regard - but other channels I favor show their journey including the mishaps, and it is that content that leaves me thinking that there’s a chance that I could grow here, too. On that note, it’s too bad that I didn’t have the cameras rolling when I spilled India Ink all over myself, my chair, and my dog’s blanket (which, thankfully, was on the chair at the time)! I suggest that you frame this sketch and add it to your gallery wall. If you don’t want to do that, perhaps have a few prints made. If you do, please let me know. Thanks again - I greatly appreciate you & your channel!

Hi Monica! Wow thank you so much for leaving such a thoughtful kind comment. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts on sketching and the decisions you made to begin sharing your own art journey. I whole heartedly agree that there is a place on social media and KZread especially for every “level” of artist to share their work. There are so many things to learn about art, not just skill wise but lifestyle wise. Everyone’s perspective is unique and that’s an amazing thing! Sometimes it’s better to learn from others in our own “skill range”. I will have to take a look at some of your art videos! I am always looking for new creators to watch 😊 I appreciate your kind comments about my art and channel. I do plan on making prints soon and will let everyone know when they’re available! Wishing you the best! 💖

@@AshleighKing What a lovely reply! Thanks! Have you decided how you’ll market your prints when they happen? Such as, an Etsy shop or perhaps using a print-on-demand service, to both reduce overhead and allow your customers the opportunity to decide the size and application that worked best for them? I’d be interested to follow your journey as you expand your work and offerings. 😃

There was a time I really loved showing people my sketches. I felt it gave my art validation. Of course, living for outside validation can often lead to fear of disappointment, that maybe your art isn't worthy to show others, which is what happened to me. Now, I'm fiercely private with my art. Which isn't good either. I look at you just going out in public and sketching, and I'm in awe. Now that I've returned to my art journey, one of my big goals is being satisfied with my own art, my own ability, and being able to go out in public and make my art. (I've got a way to go.) That's why I love your vlog so much. You're showing me it can be done. The goals I set myself are attainable. Thanks for that.

I have definitely been in that position with my art too! It’s not necessarily bad, as long as you believe in your own ability! Sometimes it’s better to keep your work to yourself so your confidence can grow 😊 but I’m glad to hear you have all those goals! I’m still nervous to sketch in public but it gets easier. Wishing you the best!

Earlier this year, I started a year-long art challenge where I try to post something new every single day on Instagram, and as part of it I committed to allowing myself to have an “ugly sketchbook” - or, at least to allow ugly moments in my sketchbook. And though I used to only share finished pieces with the occasional WIP thrown in, this time I’m trying to basically share it all. Honestly, I’m so glad of it, one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s actually been very freeing and joyous.

@@AshleighKing Even if it's not daily, and even if it's not everything, it's so freeing to allow yourself to have messy moments and experiments, and also to share that process with people. You get interesting feedback that way, you get new perspectives and find out that what you thought was unbearably messy is actually fascinating and beautiful to someone else. And it also just reinforces that it's all a process, and that everything has to start somewhere. I highly encourage it!

That will encourage many novice artists because many people only post perfection and finished products and less experienced artists don’t realize all the mistakes and messiness and trial and error that goes into the end product and feel defeated and give up.

I don't have the use to show my sketches to other people - probably because I started art not a very long time ago and my sketches are often realy interesting - but i think that it is important to show when the sketches are better than before, like a mark in our art journey. Sketches are a bit like a more naïve way to make art, and so they provide more personality than full thought peaces of art. Love your videos, it inspires me a lot. To all of you, have a great day.

I love your sketchbook and I’m glad you are becoming more confident using it and doing it in public. I have a few sketchbooks finished and a couple going on at the moment. I don’t usually show it to other people but when I share it, it is usually family members. I don’t sketch daily, but I’m making the attempt to do it. I haven’t try to sketch in public but I have thought about it. It would be interesting. I admire how far have you become and how brave you are. As usual, looking forward to another great video. I loved your first floral drawing. Btw, I think sketches are “picture frame worthy.” They have something beautiful about them. Maybe their rawness, sincerity, nakedness or originality, idk. I don’t exactly like to share my drawings or sketches, but I would definitely frame them lol

When I started my painting journey almost three years ago, I said then I would post all my work, even the ugly art I made. It's always a bit daunting to put myself out there, but it's all part of my journey as well. I learn from my mistakes and also the work I'm not so happy with. So far, I've had very positive feedback and much encouragement from people, which I'm grateful for. I almost always sketch what I'm going to paint before I do a painting. I believe drawing/sketching has helped me to grow as an artist (oh, I still feel so strange calling myself an artist, lol). I look forward to each of your vlogs. There is much inspiration in them. I found three scenes in this video that I would like to paint. We shall see. Keep making your beautiful art and sharing.

I really admire that decision Patti! I still find myself picking and choosing which art I share with the world. But you’re right, there is a lot of courage and growth found in sharing all parts of your art journey. Thank you so much! I would love to see them if you get around to painting them 😊 wishing you the best!
