rick the dowel works great remember it's precision ground and hardened and has formed radius at both ends so u don't have to make those. and inside a teamed hole it's a perfect fit.i haven't tried it without spring as u know it's hard finding that perfect spring.i am a retired machines and I have a mini machine shop in my spare room. I have a friend that installs hardwood floors and ask for scraps and layer them for patterns and make my handles.its nice looking and enjoyable hope to put something with pics on u tube as soon as I learn how..nice exchanging ideas with u.

Rick I've made two 1/2 inch engravers and one 9/16 engraver plus my last one was a 5/8 -18 plus my last one was a 5/8-18 engraver..that one has a 1/2 inch piston. The 9/16 has a 7/16 piston. I also epoxied a piece of brass tubing on the wooden handles instead of depending on the plastic tubing to be inserted in a hole....works better
Great work!
U only need 2 vent holes on body.I also use a small 3/8 dowel pin for piston its harden and precise ground..works great.

Walmart has a 120 volt tire inflating compressor.I got one modified it .its about the size of the harbor freight.. Its not same valving system so modification is lil different.but now where I was using a variac to control voltage on my battery charger to run my harbor freight compressor I just plug my new compressor into my variac eliminating the battery charger

Thats funny but thats what happened, brain fart. I buy an assortment box that has 100 or more assorted springs, I use the thin springs that are compressed together a pull type spring, I pull them apart until they stretch out just a little then cut out the length I need. They make the best "soft" spring. Making your own is probably the best way.

Great video so much good, useful, and accurate information that honestly isn’t anywhere else on KZread. There are some good videos out there but nothing that goes as in depth and detailed as yours fine sir. For that I say thank you. I do have one question about the handpiece that may be a dumb question but being a noob to this I figured I’d ask anyway. So in the handpiece, does the piston in the cylinder actually make contact with the quick change holder and it most extended point in travel, or is it only making contact with the shoulder on the inside of the handpiece created by the 2 different size bores created with the different size cavity’s created by using 2 different drill bits and reamers used to bore out the cylinder from their perspective ends?
@ralex397
3 жыл бұрын
The piston hits the back of the quick change tool holder, transferring the energy to the graver. Some hand pieces have a set screw to lock the tool holder into the hand piece, but I think you lose energy when the tool holder is locked in. Glad you enjoyed the videos!
Thanks for the plans Rick they look amazing. I am gearing up to make the graver and buy a foot pedal. But I am confused about the compressor I would need to run this... If I understand it correctly some engravers run on positive pressure using a normal air compressor, and some run on negative air pressure where the compressor needs to cycle the same air back and forth. Which type does this graver use? Can I make it work with my "workshop size" air compressor?
@ralex397
4 жыл бұрын
You must modify a small 12 volt compressor / tire inflator for this hand piece to work, it will not run on regular compressed air or pulse type engraving systems. After the compressor is modified it sucks and blows the same air back and forth, as the piston in the compressor goes up it pressurizes and pushes the piston in the hand piece against the tool holder, when the piston goes down it sucks the piston in the HP to the rear and the cycle starts over again. The speed controller slows the compressor down to usable speeds.

Thanks Rick, I really appreciate the advice. Cheers.
Do you sell any of your hand engraving machines? I want to get into engraving & want to give it a try with that Pittsburgh air compressor conversion on your videos. I just don’t have the tools or expertise to machine one (I wish). Even if you have an old one you would sell. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos!
Hi Rick Great video i have made 2 of the hand pieces one out of stainless and the other out of brass i like the brass don't know why i found that a steel piston is to hard hitting and the hand piece just runs away so i made one out of aluminum better but still didn't give me the control i wanted then i made a piston out of delrin played around with the weight by adding different screws to it finally got the control in most materials a little slow in steel but i do have control
@ralex397

Thanks Dennis, glad you liked the videos! The weight of the piston is just one of the variables in getting the hand piece to run the way you like it, its a balancing act between the speed of the compressor, foot pedal, piston weight, spring or no spring and how the graver is sharpened. For such a simple machine there is a lot going on.
May I ask what compressor set up are you using?I'm retrofitting a car tire inflator but trying to find out if a spring loaded or no spring will work I have a spring palm engraver but spring is at bottom towards the engraving bit not up in handle any info would be appreciated 👍
@ralex397
8 ай бұрын
The tire inflator must be modified, after mod it pushes and pulls/sucks and blows the same air back and forth. The spring goes behind the piston in the hand-piece. I offer free blueprints and drawing that explain how it works. If you would like them email me at ralex397@hotmail.com.

Do you think this would work with a Co2 cartridge? Or does it need a "pulse type" compressor?

No, it will not work with Co2, regular compressed air or a pulse type system. It will only work with a modified tire inflator / compressor.
Hey Rick, I noticed you used 8-32 set screws in your video tool holder. All I have handy is 10-24 x 0.187 long. Would those work . I'm gonna order some 8-32 later on ?

You can use what ever works, the 10-24 should work and can be ground shorter if needed. I used 8/32 because that was the size used in the GRS tool holders.
I've laminated some pieces of scrap hard wood and made some nice handles I bored them before turning them then I took a piece of 5/8 -3/4 piece of metal and made a threaded 1/2 20 sleeve and turned it to fit the bored hole slightly larger to press fit into wood size on wood handle or u can epoxy it by making handle hole lil larger which in turn I threaded on to a bolt and used it as a mandrel to turn and form my handles..it makes a nicer looking project feel free to email me ..will be sending pics soon..take care
Great job I would like to receive the details if possible

Hi Rick, hoping you can answer: should the QC tool be popping out with the air pressure? Not all the way out across the room but more like a long stroke that doesn’t happen once you start using the graver. I’ve noticed in some other people’s videos the QC tool also does this. Is this normal? Thanks!

Hey Rick, I’m just starting my engraving journey, l have followed your series and now have setup that makes all the correct noises and things so it should work once it has been setup, my question is how long does the graver need to protrude from the end of the collet, if this is a matter of personal choice what would be a good starting measurement, thanks for the video series, it was easy to follow and everything at my end went well, once again a massive thank you. Hi Rick, thanks for sharing this video and design. I engrave copper, steel and wood plates for intaglio printmaking. I use hand gravers but due to health issues my joints cannot take pushing a graver thru steel or boxwood for long, limiting my work ability. I looked at Lindsey and GRS air engravers about 10 years ago and concluded I could not afford to purchase them. I did not see any plans back then either. You have inspired me to make my own. Hello Rick! I manufactured a handpiece but the piston is moving to the front and doesn’t oscillate. The dimensions, position of the 4 holes are acording to your description. The play between the cylinder and piston is also what you mentioned: about 0.08 mm in diameter. What I do wrong.
@ralex397
6 жыл бұрын
If the piston covers up the vent holes it will stop.....make sure thats not happening..If it is put a small taper, radius or chamfer at the end of the piston so it wont block the vent holes. If that is not the problem make sure the intake valve on the piston of the compressor has been sealed shut. Hope that helps.
@pavelliszka
6 жыл бұрын
Rick Alexander Thanks! The quick change piece ends exactly at the midle of the vent holes, the piston ends in a round shape. So, the vent holes never will be closed by the piston. I’m using an industrial compressor, adjusted between 20 and 40 psi. What is not understsndable for me: the pressure move the piston forward till will be in contact to the end of the quick change piece. What should make the piston to start to move backward and oscillate?
@ralex397
6 жыл бұрын
You must modify a compressor to move the air in the cylinder back and forth, block the intake valve and open up the out valve going to the hand piece. As the piston goes up it compresses the air forcing the piston in the hand piece to strike the QC tool holder, when the piston in the compressor goes down it causes a suction and the piston in the hand piece is pulled back. It will not work with an unmodified compressor.
@pavelliszka
6 жыл бұрын

What about the spring and do you use an adjustable speed compressor I am trying to use an airbrush compressor with no speed control, and am not to happy with it. I am going to try and use brass, steel, plastic pistons with steel inserts for impact to control weight / speed. your thoughts thank you bill
@ralex397
7 жыл бұрын
Yes I do use a speed controller and it is a must on the modified 12 volt compressor, along with the foot peddle I feel I have good control over the hand-piece. Turned up all the way it is unusable. You are using an airbrush compressor, so your going to need a speed controller that will work with 110 volts. I think that maybe an airbrush compressor is too much for this application. Shaun Hughes said he had tried an airbrush compressor and he didn't have any luck with it. If controlling the speed does not help, then you know its too much compressor. The smaller 12 volt tire inflator/compressor seem the be the right size for this job. Bigger isn't all wise better. I can engrave steel with no problem at all, plenty of power. What is the bore and stroke of your compressor? The one Im using has a 1.184 inch bore with a .500 inch stroke. Im not sure what your asking about the spring, but it should be a very light spring. Good luck, Hope this helps.

the bore 1.581 inch with .400 in. stroke but will only run at 1725 rpm i think i need more RPM's as it stands now copper / brass, alum. is work no power why do i need a spring 1/2 of the stroke on the compressor is vacuum won't that pull the piston in the hand-piece back ? thanks again bill
@ralex397
7 жыл бұрын
I'd still try slowing it down and bring the speed up slow to see where it starts working. On my compressor I run it at half normal speed or less, any thing over half is too much.I don't think it runs any faster than 1725 at full speed. The spring is more like a shock absorber in the vacuum stroke, it don't need to hit the back of the hand-piece as hard as it needs to hit the QC tool holder. Keep at it your all most there!!

have u modified ur compressor to pull and push air instead of building pressure ?a n airbrush compressor should be great as it must produce more volume than the harbor freight tire inflator.and that works good.but u have to modify it by blocking to flapper valves
As I stated before its important when u make handles not to make too deep and creating empty useless space that will created volume for compressor to fill and causing loss of power just like having too long a hose
On that little stub on the end, you mentioned it was around 0.090 wide x a tenth tall, did you mean 0.100 tall, just curious ?
