How I make a fifteen foot foraged Christmas garland
Ойын-сауық
Georgie Newbery shows you how to make and install a fifteen foot long foraged garland.
It's mid December and it's full on foraged Christmas decorations season here. I've been making wreaths for a couple of weeks, and now the commissions come in to dress houses for special occasions.
Join me today as I show you how I make a fifteen foot garland to dress a grand staircase. I show you how I work out how much material I'll need, which kinds of foliage and twiggery pokery (technical term,) I like to use, and how I put it all together.
Then you'll see that it's all very well making the thing, but how am I going to transport it? A fifteen foot garland is a lot for a woman of five feet two inches to carry. Luckily Fabrizio is on hand to hold things in place while I tie them and soon we're all set. I just hope the kitten doesn't pull it all down before the cameras arrive!
The list of material I use is:
variegated holly
bay tree
berried ivy
contorted willow
monterey pine
and the crab apples are a variety called red sentinel
For pudging with dried stems grown specially and harvested in the summer I use:
allium purple sensation
honesty seed heads
shoo fly or nicandra phisaloides
dry grasses
and limonium, or sea lavender

Ok, I’m just going to have to stop watching you Georgie. I’m trying to get my home decorated for Christmas and you are making me drool all over everything. I’ve been studying my fireplace with its antique oak front and the matching buffet in my dining room trying to come up with an idea of a garland. Suffice it to say I’m pea green with envy after seeing yours. Can only dream! From your friend in South Carolina, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! P. S. Only kidding about not watching, I’m absolutely addicted. Gorgeous as always!

Happy Holidays. I have really enjoyed watching your videos this past year.
You astonish me because you put things together that I never would have done, but the result is glorious. I have a friend who lets me have variegated holly too. I keep him sweet with homemade mince pies and a wreath for his door! This was really useful, thank you!

What a perfect video for me!! I only have string to use. No fancy florist wire! But I have so many pretty stems and vines around that I'm wanting to use. Your video is exactly what I was needing to see! I can't wait to get started in a couple of weeks!

Astonishing beautiful. Five different kinds of greenery is remarkable and then you add wonderful crab apples plus other decorative bits and end up with unusual loveliness that doesn't look like anyone else's garland. Nothing at all like the tacky ones in stores.

Beautiful. I think I'll put something like that together for outside my door. I'll use some jute to hold it together. I'll beg some rose hips from a neighbour. I do wish I had some crab apples like those. I have dolgos, which have gone over already.

Stunning and inspiring! Definitely jealous of the crabapple! You mentioned they keep their fruit until December. Do they drop off after making cuttings or will they stay on the branches? Beautiful!! Can’t wait to see what I can make !
@theflowerfarmer
8 ай бұрын
they shed a bit but enough stay on to be worth cutting the branches x
Your use of pudging is like zhuzhing, (or zhoosh or jeuje or tszuj!) making little tweaks or final flourishes.

If you were doing it for outside would you use wire as the base instead of string. This is so beautiful ❤️

I avoid wire - would probably still use string but maybe tighter x

How long will this garland last?
@theflowerfarmer
8 ай бұрын
inside it will dry slowly over days and weeks - you can spritz to keep fresher but watch out for polished furniture underneath! outside it'll last better as plenty of winter moisture in the air unless a freeze in which air may be very dry - as usual, swings and roundabouts x

@@theflowerfarmer ok, so wake till about 2-3 weeks before Christmas to make and hang it up? (I’m hanging mine on a large beam on the ceiling inside)
How long will this garland last ????
@theflowerfarmer
Жыл бұрын
well I saw it in my client's house two weeks' later, and while I might have given it a spritz myself to keep it fresher actually it looked surprisingly good - if I were making it for my own Christmas I might make it only a couple of days before the big day x
