I am rigging up a DIY AWNING on my Mazda CX 5 without a Roof Rack, To help me stay Dry and provide some outdoor shelter Car Camping in my SUV when I am alone on adventures.
I used 25 lb magnets and so far they are holding up, as well I purchased some suction cups.

There are channels that teach knots but I would recommend a bushcraft channel to learn more skills for the outdoors. @CoalcrackerBushcraft is my favorite for short, concise and useful information but there are tons of channels to choose from. That second setup looked better, but you want to be able to open your doors with your tarp up and I'm not sure that you could. If you can find one, I picked up a 6' x 20' white tarp I found and I love it for a couple of reasons: 1. It's white, so it reflects the sun and makes it true shade and cooler underneath and 2: It's long enough that I can park nose toward the sun (ideal) and have tarp on either side of my rig. The third reason is related to the first reason and that's color. Blue tarps are ubiquitous, but blue is the favorite color of most (all?) insects, including mosquitoes. I recommend avoiding blue camping gear (and clothing) like the plague. P. S. You have a cute cat! If he's not already harnessed trained, I recommend starting as soon as possible. Cats love to explore the outdoors as well.

You can replace the regular nuts on the magnets with wing nuts to make it easier to take on and off. You can get them at a local hardware store. Just bring the magnet with you to get the proper size. I would also add a washer between the grommet and the nut.

I wish I would have thought of this last year when I went camping in Colorado. I was only there for the weekend and the one night I decided to camp, it rained the whole night. It would have been nice to open my window or door without rain coming into the car. Of course now I see all the KZread videos about using a tarp like this lol Definitely getting the supplies to do this on my next camping trip.

Great video! I was contemplating doing something similar to avoid the cost of roof cross bars and the attached awning. I was questioning what weight magnets to get... now I know 25 lbs will work! Thank you so much for sharing this affordable option! 😃

You’re so welcome!! 😉 yes I think it’s a good option, look for ones rubber coated if you can. As well the suction cups w carabiners are an option. Worth a try!! 1200$ for a roof rack is just not an option for me at this point. Appreciate your feedback
