How I'm Planning for the One Book July Challenge

This coming July, I am hoping to reduce my planner stack and challenge myself to only use ONE planner. (Well maybe two). In this video I discuss how I am planning to combine the different elements from my multiple planner system into one book. Stay tuned for how I am going to set it all up!

TBH, I always find this cycle of trends really wild. From August-May, the trend is to buy multiple expensive planners, just to get to June-July when the trend is to abandon them all save for one... but just for one month... And then come December-January, the trend is to express disappointment for having multiple barely used books and for not sticking with any one thing for the whole year. I will concede that OBJ could be good if someone is overwhelmed, to figure out a system that works for them, but if they already have a good system regardless of the number of books, I don't see the point in trying to force it just for the sake of a trend. All that to say, I think you should just do you. Stay in them all, abandon them all; do whatever makes sense and works for you regardless of what's trending. Personally, I really like seeing your consistency, and how you update all your books in different ways, and I love all your ink swatching! For me, having more than one thing to "have" to keep up with is too much pressure. After experimenting with blank notebooks (DIY planner/bujo) in 2022 & 2023, I found a format I liked, so this year I am just using an A5 Take a Note planner for planning, and an A5 stalogy for any/everything else like journaling, notes, books, lists, recipes, pens & inks, tarot, commonplacing, etc. and I love it!

Your planners are really well used. I'm not sure I'd even try to cram that all into one. I just have a pocket day designer from office max. I try to spend $20 or less a year on a planner, but I got off track in 2023 and it followed me some into 2024. I was in personal rings before this.

For next year, you may want to check out the Journey Planner by Nisha Fernando. It is similar to the Common Planner (vertical weekly, TRP, etc) but also has a section for meal tracking (that I convert to overall health), a section for habit tracking, goal tracking, and a dated daily (with combined weekends in the back. Would probably be a great fit for you and I believe she said she is coming out with an A5 next year. (This year was the first year and it is a B6.)

@@pbudinsky1 By tracking my meals I am essentially tracking my eating habits over time :) I can see what I have been eating consistently and relate it to how I am feeling emotionally and physically. For example, times that I eat "cleaner" or introduce more fruits/vegetables I notice I don't have as many headaches or stomach issues, vs times that I eat out a lot or have more hearty meals I tend to have more headaches and stomach issues. I see the meal tracking as a piece of the puzzle in my health and overall well being! Hope that helps :)

This was an interesting watch! I think the one book system is such a dream for many. In a way I think it would be lovely to have everything in one, but I do tend to categorize things in my mind, so for me, multiple books works better. I have a thoughts journal that is only for processing my thoughts, a memorykeeper and a planner. I find it best for me so I can easily access the things I need and not get distracted. i think it's still a one book july for you, even if you keep the astrology stuff separate. As I see it, it's more of a reference/studying tool. It's more useful to have all of it in it's own space, so it says easily accessible.

This is easily the most thorough One Book July video I have ever seen! The way you’ve organized the information from multiple books into your one Big Book is incredibly impressive. The heart of One Book July is to simplify, in whatever way works for you, especially since half of the current year has passed. It’s a time to review what’s been working and what hasn’t in hopes of simplifying, if that is what you want to do. You’ve done a fantastic job of exploring whether or not that would work for you. I love what you’ve done so far, and I can’t wait to see how July goes for you!

I’ve been doing one book 2024 in an A5 Common Planner for my planner and a separate A5 Sterling ink notebook for messy journaling, scratch processing, and work notes. I’m almost out of pages in my common planner and stressing! It’s definitely taught me that I need one planner (one source of truth), but multiple notebooks. Portability became a factor that I wasn’t anticipating; discovered I like to have my planner on me as a security blanket. Which pointed out how much I DON’T need to be carrying around my work collections all the time. On top of struggling to find my pertinent work notes amongst my personal journaling and processing. I already know that I’ll be using a weeks size planner for edc, a notebook for end of day journaling/trackers/collections, another notebook for work collections and notes, and a fourth notebook for messy processing and scratch work. My planner is where I record everything, my EOD journal is where I review and visualize all that recorded data into layouts and collections that I can reference long term or use to see if I’m meeting my goals.

Lovely discussion; thanks for sharing! I say keep up with the astrology book and any other planners/journals that you feel work best independently. I've done OBJ since the beginning and now I use it as a challenge (e.g. twi years ago I did a journal everyday challenge and I've been journalling ever since!). Don't force yourself to put everything into one book since you might regret it and have to back plan everything in your original book(s) afterwards! This year I'm going to do a 'Miracle Book' challenge where I write a column every day in a B6 SI notebook about a different topic (plants, animals, astronomy, etc.) just to learn about it. Happy OBJ2024!!

Ooh, I loved listening to your thought process! I look forward to seeing how you rearrange your Common Planner to fit the additional information for the month! My impulsive self jumped right into moving my planning to one book (2, if the weekly supplement counts as a second one), but it’s likely to extend to July. I think moving into a smaller book is my attempt to make my “work” feel like a smaller proportion of my life, and if I end up using a Cousin, it’ll be more so for memory keeping. I don’t know - I might be trying to justify leaving a space for my Cousin, even if I don’t use it for planning, bc I love the book. 😅

I think that with the way my life is going that I want to combine my EDC and health planner as one. My garden info maybe in a plain notebook or in my EDC. The dedicated planner didn't work for me. The one thing I won't combine is my tarot one. I use it as a learning tool. However next year I will be going back to a notebook instead of a planner style. So as planners go, I think I will be sticking to just one and combining the EDC, health and garden. Then have my tarot learning journal. Oh I will have a separate planner for work, but I don't consider that for some reason because it stays at work and is only used as a functional work planner. I wish you good luck on reducing your stack. One book I feel is difficult, especially when you are using trackers etc. They take up a lot of room. I have extra room in my A5 CP, but don't use one page a day in my dailies.

I can get along with two planners. One for health and wellness, and mostly because I want to keep it and only look at that information at the end of the year, and then the other planner is for my gardening and everything else. Could you do the health trackers on one page with a july dashboard? Just use two daily pages where you can separate out months and the first two pages can hold your health trackers, big goals for the month, a perpetual calendar where you can write your gratitude or highlight of the day. Basically a bullet journal way to set it up so you can have your health stuff in the A5 since the pages are bigger. Also, I agree with others putting your astrology and garden book together as one since I truly believe they coincide with one another, and so did my ancestors. Just something to think about!
