How I'm Growing Veg VERTICALLY To Maximise Efficiency At My Allotment | Gardening For Beginners

Vertical garden supports and structures don't have to be expensive or complicated!
We're building vertical supports at the allotment garden this week, on a budget! Butternut squash, watermelon, cucumber, sweet potato, aubergine, tomato, and physalis are some of the things we are making supports for!
Many of these plants require additional support to fit as much into a small space as possible and also so some don't trail everywhere and take over, like the squash!
The materials I'm using are very simple and most of us have these items lying around. I'm mostly using items I've already got around the allotment. They're also very cheap to buy if you don't already have them.
I hope this video helped you out in some way and gave you some inspiration!
If it did, press the like button and show your support. It means a lot. If you haven't already subscribed, and want to learn and grow with me, then you may want to consider subscribing to my channel and clicking the 'bell' icon too, and you'll never miss any new videos!
Cheers!

Thanks! There are some small ones but not too bad. The ones in the polytunnel didn't have rust but the ones outdoors have it quite bad which I haven't harvested yet

Thank you. I put those together in 2021 and they're still doing good. I move them to a different bed each year whenever I crop rotate and that is it

Fingers crossed! Cheers Ali! I'm hoping things get a move on so we can get some good harvests - The weather in the UK is awful at the moment and very cool, Thankfully I am not in the UK for the next week 😂 expecting to come back to a slug party though! Have a great weekend Ali 😊

Nice video. I like the subtle editing and music. I think you've sold me on a Poly Tunnel. I'm soon to be making a vertical garden using empty pop bottles! I certainly need a vertical solution for my 2 x Butternut Squash plants. It looks like the frame of the Poly Tunnel is a helpful place to anchor your trellis. Great work!

Cheers Rich! Polytunnels are well worth it, just got to do extra stuff to secure the cheap ones or they will fly off 😂 what are you doing with the pop bottles?

@@downtoearthwithjim Pop bottles will be screwed to a fence post upside down, each funnelling water into the one beneath it. Each with a window cut into it and planted (hopefully) with strawberries if I'm not too late with planting them 🍓.

Nice work! Have you grown sweet potatoes before? I have two plants and was told to put each one in its own 30l tub, you put a few in yours, will that produce a good harvest?

To be honest I just winged it and stuck 4 in each one. I'm not too sure what I'll get, I'd be happy with anything. Never grown them before so it's all experimental. Of course I'll be filming a harvest video when it's harvest time 😊

I've got a few more slips so I may plant more up in 30 litre buckets planting just one in each one and compare the results

Hi JIM , what is the fertiliser you used ?

  • @downtoearthwithjim

Hi there! I used sulphate of potash with fruiting/flowering plants to promote better fruiting. I've also used blood fish and bone but ran out of that so used the rest of the bone meal I have left as well. Those are supplements to the compost I'm using. Whilst on the topic, I also use vitax organic potato fertilizer for my potatoes too
