I was thinking it must be a big mistake that got him rejected but when he said it was the fkin checkbox, my jaw dropped. You were lucky that you had your h1b approved. Damn. The struggle for international students in this country is real.

Remember folks - Check your OPT application again and again. DO NOT DEPEND ON school or your employer. Get it proof read by your friends, parents and everyone you know. Also, apply early. Start at least 3 months before your planned start date. Be proactive and you'll be fine.

It's a common notion for people who get picked in the first attempt of lottery to not waste their $410 and file for STEM Extension, as they know they will be in CAP GAP. However, 2020 was special and most students didn't take the risk of relying on CAP GAP considering massive layoffs. A good thing will be to encourage students to still file STEM extensions to handle unforeseen conditions like job loss, or H1-B denial.

Lucky that H1B was approved and the cap gap kicked in. I was in the same flux in 2017. I got cocky that my H1B was picked and it will anyway be approved September 30th and I'd have cap-gap OPT and I did not apply for STEM extension and let my initial OPT expire in June. Unfortunately, I got an RFE at the end of August and the Premium Processing was stopped so I was in flux. I researched a lot and found out that I can still apply for my STEM OPT during cap-gap OPT (took a lot of personal research). I quickly reached out to my DSO at my university and applied for my STEM OPT extension in mid September and got my extension soon after. I got my H1B approved in February 2018. It was a self-inflicted nightmare. Since then I'm very very careful of the dates and I make sure I'm not lenient when dealing with USCIS. 😅

Your luck saved you bro. I have been in the same situation last year and my employer was not willing to apply for a H1 status for me. I sent my stem extension , the Uscis received it but I did make a blunder and sent 495$ instead of 410$. My extension was rejected and I recorrected it and sent it again but by the time they have received it this time ( it took along time since ups was hardly working ) my initial opt has expired. I had no other go, reached out to couple of lawyers but could not find any solution. No one was recruiting full on too at that point and unfortunately I had to return to India leaving eveything behind.

My OPT expires on August and I haven't filed for STEM extension yet. I'm in the process of changing jobs which might happen in a month and half. Don't know if I should wait it out till I get the job or apply for extension with current employer

Apply bro with your current, if you cannot make the switch within 2 weeks. If not possible, tell the new employer that you will join after you get the STEM EAD in hand, which should take 2-3 months.

Hey I have a similar situation, I diled for stem extension and within a week for a RFE asking me submit W2, letters from employers, paystubs etc. I responded with all the evidence. Now waiting for the result. First year in US is so hectic and finally I have cracked my dream interview with US bank with a package of 150k and just waiting for the stem approval. But I am loosing ny shit, I can hardly focus on my work. Eat or sleep. I am so concerned 😟. I hope I get through this since the depression of being so close and yet being sent back is horrifying.

When did you apply for H1B and were you able to work between your OPT expiration and H1B got approval? Did you need to file anything for Cap-Gap?

Did you file for Premium H1B Processing? Because yours was approved in July, so just curious. Your response will be helpful.

Hello fellow international in US! Question: now that you’re working full-time, do you receive revenue from KZread? Based on what I understand, we cannot have more than one job and any other income stream has to be “passive”.

URGENT!!! Thanks for your video. I was recently laid off and my initial OPT ends next month. I have a potential job offer on the way, I am behind the window of submission for STEM Extension. What can I do at the moment so I wouldn't go out of status? I'll appreciate any suggestions. Kindly treat as urgent. Thank you.
